But the words you say to yourself while exercising don\u2019t actually have to be about the activity, your body, or performance itself. You can do an affirmation workout that combines movement with positive self-talk about <em>any<\/em> topic for some majorly mood-boosting self-care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAffirmation workouts came from the idea that we wanted to literally address the mind and the body at the same time,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/alysonstoner\/?hl=en\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/alysonstoner\/?hl=en\">Alyson Stoner<\/a>, cofounder of digital wellness platform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.movementgenius.com\/site\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.movementgenius.com\/site\/about\">Movement Genius<\/a>, says on this week\u2019s episode of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/well-good-podcast\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/well-good-podcast\/\"><em>The Well+Good Podcast<\/em><\/a>. \u201cIt&#8217;s a chance to check in with your mindset [and] perhaps adjust some of the thoughts you were having about yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An affirmation, positive self-talk, or self-affirmation, is \u201cany thought about oneself that is believable and vivid and that reinforces positive characteristics, abilities, or skills,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.apa.org\/self-affirmation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/dictionary.apa.org\/self-affirmation\">according to the American Psychological Association<\/a>. The<a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.apa.org\/self-affirmation-theory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/dictionary.apa.org\/self-affirmation-theory\">\u00a0theory of self-affirmation<\/a> is that maintaining and enforcing a view of yourself as \u201cwell-adapted, moral, competent, stable, and able to control important outcomes\u201d leads to mental stability, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4814782\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" class=\"no-underline citation\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4814782\/\"><span>research shows<\/span><sup>2<\/sup><\/a> that doing so through spoken affirmations reinforces these ideas. Some therapy treatments involve repeating affirmations to yourself daily or having go-to affirmations for when you encounter moments of struggle.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\">\n<hr\/>\n<div class=\"experts-in-article noskim py-[24px] px-[40px]\">\n<p>Experts In This Article<\/p>\n<ul class=\"!ml-[18px]\">\n<li> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/alysonstoner\/?hl=en\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/alysonstoner\/?hl=en\">Alyson Stoner<\/a>, co-founder of Movement Genius, a digital wellness platform that hosts classes centered on mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing <\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<hr\/><\/div>\n<p>This is already a common part of many fitness experiences: It\u2019s not unusual for spin instructors or yoga teachers to share positive, motivating words of encouragement that may or may not relate to the actual exercises. Movement Genius takes this a step further with affirmation workouts that pair 15-minute movement sessions (of varying difficulty) with a soundtrack of affirmations that are meant to be repeated to yourself.
