Breath is a central part of both activities, as is being present in your body and noticing thoughts and sensations as they come and go. So when you need to get in the right headspace before you hit the pavement, trail, or track, a pre-running meditation can be just what you need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPreparing yourself for a run\u2014or any kind of fitness\u2014is very much making sure you&#8217;re in the right mindset,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/lauren-zucker-887a6310\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/lauren-zucker-887a6310\/\">Lauren Zucker<\/a>, the co-founder and CEO of meditation, breathwork, and wellness studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sage-sound.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.sage-sound.com\/\">Sage + Sound<\/a>, and this week&#8217;s guest on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/well-good-podcast\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/well-good-podcast\/\"><em>The Well+Good Podcast<\/em><\/a>. \u201cCreating an intention and taking slow breaths to calm your nervous system and get yourself prepped is a big piece.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<hr\/>\n<p>In addition to focusing your mind and calming your nervous system, doing a pre-run meditation can also help you make the most of your runs on the level of brain chemistry, according to running instructor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ryanterrencemccann\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ryanterrencemccann\/\">Ryan McCann<\/a>, the founder of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coolfitclub.com\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.coolfitclub.com\/\">Cool Fit Club<\/a>, who leads meditations before group runs and swims.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you meditate, you light up the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3004979\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3004979\/\">neurogenesis in the prefrontal cortex<\/a>, which is critical for concentration,&#8221; McCann previously told Well+God about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/how-to-work-out-without-music\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/how-to-work-out-without-music\/\">how to run without music<\/a>. &#8220;And when we do aerobic exercise, we\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21282661\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21282661\">generate neurons<\/a>\u00a0in the hippocampus, which is critical for memory. So when you meditate before working out, you really tap into the focus zone and increase that level of concentration before you go out there and test your legs and lungs. It\u2019s a great option for meditators who want less instruction than a guided meditation, but more stimulation than silence. It\u2019s also Zucker\u2019s pre-running meditation of choice since it helps her hone in on what she wants to get out of the run.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI listen to a sound meditation before to get me grounded and set,\u201d Zucker says. She uses \u201cthat hour of meditation as a way to set an intention and get ready for a run.\u201d Then, she focuses on putting the intentions and focus on mindfulness and the breath into practice during her run.<\/p>\n<p>Want to try a pre-run meditation?
