Depending on your skin&#8217;s condition and the underlying cause of the hyperpigmentation, some of these patches may naturally fade over time, while others might require weeks or even months of attention and care to resolve.<\/p>\n<h2>How hyperpigmentation has historically been treated<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cHyperpigmentation is one of the most difficult skin conditions to treat, as the damage tends to occur both superficially as well as in the deeper layers of the skin,&#8221; says Dr. Suzman. &#8220;Because of this, many treatments can be quite destructive to the skin in order to reach the deeper layers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Though there have long been ingredients on the market that can <em>help<\/em> with hyperpigmentation, none has proven to be perfect (except, of course, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/spf-awards-2023\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/spf-awards-2023\/\">sunscreen<\/a>, which can prevent it from happening in the first place). Take vitamin C\u2014which has long been touted as a cure-all for discoloration\u2014for example. &#8220;Framing vitamin C it as the ultimate solution to dark spots is absolutely false,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idrissderm.com\/about\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" rel=\"sponsored\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.idrissderm.com\/about\/\">Shereene Idriss, MD<\/a>, founder of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.idrissderm.com\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" rel=\"sponsored\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.idrissderm.com\/\"> Idriss Dermatology<\/a> and PillowtalkDerm Skincare. Though the ingredient is still available via prescription, over-the-counter sales of the controversial active were banned in 2020 as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-works-protect-consumers-potentially-harmful-otc-skin-lightening-products#:~:text=As%20a%20result%2C%20since%20enactment,they%20can%20be%20legally%20marketed.\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-works-protect-consumers-potentially-harmful-otc-skin-lightening-products#:~:text=As%20a%20result%2C%20since%20enactment,they%20can%20be%20legally%20marketed.\"> part of the CARES Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Finding effective OTC hyperpigmentation treatments has been particularly challenging for those with deeper skin tones. \u201cThere\u2019s become an overarching awareness of the lack of clinical testing and research being done on products for people of color,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/madspunjabi\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" rel=\"sponsored\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/madspunjabi\/\">Madhu Punjabi<\/a>, the co-founder and CEO of<a href=\"https:\/\/lionpose.com\/products\/unspotted-4x-hyperpigmentation-serum\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" rel=\"sponsored\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/lionpose.com\/products\/unspotted-4x-hyperpigmentation-serum\"> Lion Pose<\/a>.
