(It makes me cross my legs just thinking about them.) Oxalate stones are the most common type, forming when the oxalate concentration in your urine gets so high it basically <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/17538185\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">crystallizes<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> out of solution like rock candy. Some foods, like spinach, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/regepi.bwh.harvard.edu\/health\/Oxalate\/files\/Oxalate%20Content%20of%20Foods.xls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">have<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> a lot of oxalates in them, as you can see below and in the table shown at 0:29 in my video <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/oxalates-in-spinach-and-kidney-stones-should-we-be-concerned\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Oxalates in Spinach and Kidney Stones: Should We Be Concerned?<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Should we try to reduce our intake of oxalates to lower our risk?<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">It turns out that people who do <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17538185\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">get<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> stones don\u2019t seem to eat any more oxalates on average than people who don\u2019t get stones. It may be less what you eat and more what you absorb. People who are predisposed to kidney stones just <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16600737\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">appear<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to be born with a higher intestinal oxalate absorption. Their guts just really suck it up. \u201cPeople who have hyperoxaluria\u2014s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o-called \u2018super absorbers\u2019\u2014can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16567159\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">absorb<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> 50% more oxalate than non\u2013stone formers.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-95693\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/0-29.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/0-29.png 1920w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/0-29-960x540.png 960w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/0-29-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/0-29-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/0-29-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/0-29-480x270.png 480w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/0-29-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/0-29-720x405.png 720w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/0-29-540x304.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Overall, the impact of typical dietary oxalate on the amounts of oxalates that end up in the urine \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18650406\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">appears<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to be small.\u201d In fact, e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ven a \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">massive\u201d dose of dietary oxalates typically only \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26816783\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">results<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in a relatively mild increase\u201d in the amount that makes it into your urine, as you can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11135080\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">see<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in the graph below and at 1:21 in my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/oxalates-in-spinach-and-kidney-stones-should-we-be-concerned\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">video<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. A 25-fold increase in oxalate consumption <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11135080\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">doesn\u2019t<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> even double the concentration of oxalates flowing through your kidneys, so it is \u201cindeed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26816783\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">determined<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> more frequently by genetic than environmental factors,\u201d like diet. Still, until you get your first kidney stone, how do you know if you\u2019re a super absorber or not? Is it safer just to generally avoid higher oxalate fruits and vegetables? People who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24859445\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">eat<\/span><\/a> <i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">more<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> fruits and veggies may actually tend to get <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fewer <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">kidney stones.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-95695\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/1-21.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/1-21.png 1920w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/1-21-960x540.png 960w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/1-21-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/1-21-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/1-21-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/1-21-480x270.png 480w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/1-21-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/1-21-720x405.png 720w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/1-21-540x304.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When researchers put it to the test and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15569332\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">removed<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> produce from people\u2019s diets, their kidney stone risk went <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">up<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Removing fruits and veggies can make your dietary oxalate intake go down, but your body <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">produces<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> its own oxalate internally as a waste product that you may have more difficulty getting rid of without the alkalizing effects of fruits and vegetables on your urine pH. This may help <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24752465\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">explain<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> why those eating plant-based get fewer kidney stones, but it also may be due to them <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15569332\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">cutting<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> their intake of animal protein, which can have an acid-forming effect on the kidneys. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">We\u2019ve <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/534817\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">known<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> this for 40 years. J<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ust a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> single can of tuna fish a day can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/573189\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">increase<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> your risk of forming kidney stones by 250 percent, whereas just <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11784873\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">cutting<\/span><\/a> <i><span data-contrast=\"none\">back<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> on animal protein may help slash that risk in half.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Surely there\u2019s some level of oxalate intake that could put people at risk regardless. There have been a few rare cases <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29203127\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">reported<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> of people who drink green juices and smoothies getting oxalate kidney stones, though most had extenuating circumstances. In one case, however, a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> woman\u2019s kidneys shut down after a ten-day juice cleanse, which included two cups of spinach a day. Normally, we might not expect a cup or two of spinach to cause such a violent reaction, but she had two aggravating factors: She had had gastric bypass surgery, which can increase oxalate absorption, and a history of prolonged antibiotic use. There\u2019s actually a friendly bacterium called <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">oxalobacter<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that we want in our colon because it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21381959\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">eats<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> oxalate for breakfast, leaving even less for us to absorb, but it can get wiped out by long-term, broad-spectrum antibiotic use. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Even with those two aggravating factors, she probably wouldn\u2019t have run into a problem if she had <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15826055\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">used<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> something other than spinach (or beet greens or swiss chard) when making the smoothies for her cleanse. As you can see in the graph below and at 3:53 in my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/oxalates-in-spinach-and-kidney-stones-should-we-be-concerned\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">video<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, compared to that trifecta of high-oxalate greens, kale has hundreds of times <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fewer<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> oxalates than all three. She would have had to have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29203127\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">juiced<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in excess of 650 cups of kale <em>every<\/em><\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> day<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to get a comparable dose\u2014more than 6,000 cups of kale over the ten days of her cleanse.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-95697\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/3-53.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/3-53.png 1920w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/3-53-960x540.png 960w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/3-53-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/3-53-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/3-53-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/3-53-480x270.png 480w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/3-53-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/3-53-720x405.png 720w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/09\/3-53-540x304.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Are the three high-oxalate greens only a problem for people with extenuating circumstances or who are otherwise at high risk? What if you cook the greens? And, how much is too much?
