You look at the clock to calculate how much sleep you\u2019re losing, or you think about your jam-packed to-do list the next day, which only arouses you more. \u201cYour body gets tense, your muscles get tight, your heart rate and blood pressure go up, and you have more trouble sleeping,\u201d he adds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he recommends comforting your body. \u201cImagine you&#8217;re floating in a bath, a lake, a hot tub, or floating in space,\u201d Spiegel says. You also may want to practice what he calls a <em>cyclic sigh<\/em>, \u201cwhere you inhale halfway, hold your breath, and fully and slowly exhale through your mouth,\u201d he explains. \u201cAs you do that, you trigger the soothing parasympathetic autonomic system and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/a-parasympathetic-breathing-exercise-to-calm-your-mind-body\">help your body relax<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Keep floating in your imagination, and if you have any negative thoughts about your sleep habits or upcoming work schedule, detach them from your body\u2014project them as if you were watching them on a movie screen. \u201cYou may even think of something you can do to help with the problem, but you&#8217;re experiencing your thoughts as if they were just flowing through you, not something you need to act on,\u201d Spiegel adds.\u00a0\u201cAnd that can help people get to sleep.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1675549\">\r\n<\/div>\r\n<script>(function(w,q){w[q]=w[q]||[];w[q].push([\"_mgc.load\"])})(window,\"_mgq\");\r\n<\/script>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWhen you&#8217;re having trouble getting to sleep, you usually do the wrong things right away,\u201d Spiegel declares.
