One group followed a conventional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/diet-plan-for-weight-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">weight-loss diet<\/a>, while the other group consumed most of their carbohydrates at dinner.<\/p>\n<p>The surprising results: Over the course of the six-month study, the group that ate the carb-heavy dinner reported greater weight loss and body fat mass reductions.<\/p>\n<p>And more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4425165\/#__sec3title\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research suggests<\/a> the \u201ceat late, gain weight\u201d adage applies to large quantities of food, but not to small meals consisting of nutrient-dense foods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019ve already consumed a large amount of food during the day, late-night eating may just be excess calories that could lead to weight gain,\u201d Maguire says. \u201cThis is especially true if you\u2019re consuming foods with no nutritional value \u2014 think potato chips, soda, or candy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But if you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/mindful-eating\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">eating mindfully<\/a>, Maguire adds, there can definitely be some benefits to eating at night.<\/p>\n<p>A higher-protein snack with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/dietary-fiber\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high-fiber carbs<\/a> before bedtime may help reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/4-strategies-reduce-muscle-soreness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exercise-induced muscle soreness<\/a>, prevent hunger pangs in the night, and possibly help with healthy blood sugar control.<\/p>\n<p>Bottom line: \u201cIf you\u2019re eating at night, don\u2019t go about it mindlessly,\u201d Maguire says. \u201cEat with purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Does Meal Timing Matter?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/10154159\/does-eating-at-night-make-you-gain-weight-600-meal-timing.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-163672\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/10154159\/does-eating-at-night-make-you-gain-weight-600-meal-timing.png\" alt=\"Clock on Plate | Does Eating at Night Make You Gain Weight\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are some potential benefits to planning your meals around when your body needs certain nutrients, a.k.a.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/meal-timing-facts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">timed nutrition<\/a>. This process is known as the \u201cthermic effect of food\u201d (TEF).<\/p>\n<p>Protein is the most metabolically expensive macronutrient \u2014 you burn\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3873760\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">up to 30 percent<\/a>\u00a0of the calories you eat from protein during the digestion process.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s one of the main reasons why protein (or taking a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/is-protein-powder-good-for-you\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protein shake\u00a0supplement<\/a>) can be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32699189\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">helpful for weight loss<\/a>.
