Our bodies are typically used to moving forwards only, since that\u2019s how we tend to get through most tasks of daily life, like walking or climbing stairs. \u201cGetting more variety in the way that you\u2019re moving is definitely going to help with stability,\u201d Norris explains.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Pickleball is low-impact, weight-bearing exercise<\/h2>\n<p>In terms of the kinds of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/exercising-with-osteoporosis\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/exercising-with-osteoporosis\/\">exercise proven to slow bone loss<\/a>, the gold standard is weight-bearing, low-impact movement. You want enough load to stimulate bone growth (swimming or cycling won&#8217;t do it), but high-impact activities like running or jumping can be dangerous for thinning bones.<\/p>\n<p>By its very nature, pickleball offers the best of both worlds. As Johnson says, \u201cBecause the court is smaller and you\u2019ll most often be playing with a doubles partner, you don\u2019t have to run. You\u2019ll move intentionally or power walk, but those are both low-impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/low-intensity-vs-low-impact-workouts\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/low-intensity-vs-low-impact-workouts\/\">Low-impact doesn\u2019t mean unchallenging<\/a>, though. In a typical recreational pickleball game, your heart will be pumping for around 15 to 25 minutes at a time. Throughout, you\u2019ll be improving your cardiovascular fitness through weight-bearing movement around the court\u2014and (hopefully) hitting the ball.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Pickleball is a fun, social sport<\/h2>\n<p>For Norris, the fun factor of pickleball is what makes it such an effective weapon in the battle for long-term bone health: \u201cResearch always shows that people who participate in <a href=\"https:\/\/archpublichealth.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s13690-019-0354-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/archpublichealth.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s13690-019-0354-0\">group activity<\/a>, or who have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glofox.com\/blog\/the-gym-membership-retention-statistics-worth-retaining-in-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.glofox.com\/blog\/the-gym-membership-retention-statistics-worth-retaining-in-2019\/\">personalized coaching<\/a>, increase engagement and retention,\u201d says.
