No <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/5-yoga-poses-to-practice-first-thing-in-morning\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"mbg-track-event\" data-track-event-types=\"click\" data-track-type=\"article-link\" data-track-prop-element-id=\"in-body-link\" data-track-prop-label=\"page_type | element_id\" data-track-prop-category=\"Link\" data-track-prop-link=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/5-yoga-poses-to-practice-first-thing-in-morning\" rel=\"noopener\">stretches<\/a>, brain games, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/best-memory-supplements\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"mbg-track-event\" data-track-event-types=\"click\" data-track-type=\"article-link\" data-track-prop-element-id=\"in-body-link\" data-track-prop-label=\"page_type | element_id\" data-track-prop-category=\"Link\" data-track-prop-link=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/best-memory-supplements\" rel=\"noopener\">special supplements<\/a> (there will be plenty of time for that later!). Just a quick emotional reflection: \u201cSometimes I&#8217;ll wake up, and already the first thing coming out of my mouth is a complaint. I&#8217;ll grab that immediately and manage it,\u201d she adds.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to Leaf, there\u2019s a sliver of mental space right when you wake up that\u2019s crucial for mind management. \u201cYour conscious mind is only awake when you&#8217;re awake,\u201d she notes, but your <em>unconscious<\/em> mind works 24\/7, even while you\u2019re asleep. Your mind is very vulnerable when you first wake up, as your unconscious and conscious mind start to work together again.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If I&#8217;m in a negative frame of mind, I may need to actually spend five minutes or so getting myself back to [baseline],&#8221; Leaf explains. &#8220;What happened? Was it a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/dreams\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"mbg-track-event\" data-track-event-types=\"click\" data-track-type=\"article-link\" data-track-prop-element-id=\"in-body-link\" data-track-prop-label=\"page_type | element_id\" data-track-prop-category=\"Link\" data-track-prop-link=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/dreams\" rel=\"noopener\">dream<\/a>? Was it something unresolved from yesterday that I carried over and went to sleep with? I get that sorted out, and then that sets me up for whatever comes next.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you fail to work through those sensitive emotions, Leaf says, they will no doubt affect the rest of your day. That said, take the time to reflect on how you&#8217;re feeling before you even get out of bed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If that\u2019s not possible, try to tap into those emotions while going through the motions of your morning routine. \u201cIf you see that you&#8217;re in a complaining or negative mindset while you&#8217;re cleaning your teeth, getting yourself ready for the day, or getting ready to do a workout\u2026make sure [you don\u2019t need] to do a bit more work,\u201d she says. \u201cSo by the time [you] get out the door and move, [you] don&#8217;t drag that negativity into that action.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1675549\">\r\n<\/div>\r\n<script>(function(w,q){w[q]=w[q]||[];w[q].push([\"_mgc.load\"])})(window,\"_mgq\");\r\n<\/script>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;The first thing I do every morning is take note of how I&#8217;ve woken up and immediately observe what emotions [I feel],&#8221; says Leaf.
