These <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/002222.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">include<\/a>:*<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Breaking down food<\/li>\n<li>Growth and development<\/li>\n<li>Tissue repair<\/li>\n<li>Muscle growth and repair<\/li>\n<li>Providing energy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While hundreds of amino acids exist, we only use about 20.<\/p>\n<h2>What Amino Acids Are Essential and Non-Essential?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cAbout half of amino acids are deemed essential,\u201d says dietitian Natalie Allen, RD, MS, team dietitian <a href=\"https:\/\/search.missouristate.edu\/people\/natalieallen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Missouri State University<\/a>. \u201cEssential amino acids must be consumed through the diet; the body cannot make them.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Essential amino acids<\/h3>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/002222.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nine essential amino acids<\/a>\u00a0are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Gistidine<\/li>\n<li>Isoleucine<\/li>\n<li>Leucine<\/li>\n<li>Lysine<\/li>\n<li>Methionine<\/li>\n<li>Phenylalanine<\/li>\n<li>Threonine<\/li>\n<li>Tryptophan<\/li>\n<li>Valine<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Non-essential amino acids<\/h3>\n<p>Non-essential amino acids are those that your body will produce whether you get them from the food you eat or not.<\/p>\n<p>They include alanine, arginine, asparagine, aspartic acid, cysteine, glutamic acid, glutamine, glycine, proline, serine, and tyrosine.<\/p>\n<h3>Conditional amino acids<\/h3>\n<p>Conditional amino acids are essential only when you\u2019re stressed or sick.<\/p>\n<p>This group includes arginine, cysteine, glutamine, tyrosine, glycine, ornithine, proline, and serine.<\/p>\n<h2>The Benefits of BCAAS<\/h2>\n<p><a title=\"Leucine\" href=\"http:\/\/pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/compound\/6106\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Leucine<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Isoleucine\" href=\"http:\/\/pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/compound\/6306\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">isoleucine<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"Valine\" href=\"http:\/\/pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/compound\/83693\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">valine<\/a> are a trio of essential amino acids known as BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids).<\/p>\n<p>The name comes from their chemical structures, and these three work together in unique ways. Usually, amino acids need your liver to break them down before you can use them.<\/p>\n<p>However, BCAAs don\u2019t need to \u201cwait in line\u201d before your muscles can use them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResearch shows that BCAAs play an important role in muscle repair and growth,\u201d says Trevor Thieme, CSCS, Beachbody\u2019s executive director of fitness and nutrition content. They\u2019re included in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teambeachbody.com\/shop\/us\/d\/beachbody-performance-recover-BBPRecoverAllFlavors?refsource=Blog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beachbody Recover<\/a>\u00a0\u201cto help kick-start the recovery process,\u201d he explains.*<\/p>\n<p>BCAAs may also help you maintain muscle mass, uniquely fuel your working muscles, and support muscle <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16365096\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protein synthesis<\/a>\u00a0and muscle repair.*<\/p>\n<h2>What Foods Sources Have Amino Acids?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/10131321\/amino-acids-600-sources.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-149623\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/10131321\/amino-acids-600-sources.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re eating enough protein, you\u2019re likely getting enough amino acids, explains Allen.<\/p>\n<p>Food sources that provide that essential macro also provide at least some of the amino acids you need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEating a variety of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6315330\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protein-rich foods<\/a>\u00a0will help ensure you are getting a balance of amino acids,\u201d she says. \u201cMeat is generally the best source of protein and amino acids. All meat items provide protein and (hence) amino acids. Vegetarian sources of amino acids include eggs, nuts, dairy foods, and beans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Foods that are\u00a0complete proteins\u00a0(usually animal sources) provide all essential amino acids.<\/p>\n<p>Those that are\u00a0<em>incomplete\u00a0<\/em>(often <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/10-great-vegetarian-sources-protein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plant sources<\/a>) either don\u2019t provide them all or don\u2019t offer high enough amounts of certain essential amino acids.<\/p>\n<h3>Complete proteins<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Meat, poultry, and seafood<\/li>\n<li>Eggs<\/li>\n<li>Dairy<\/li>\n<li>Soy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Incomplete proteins<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Legumes (beans, peas, and lentils)<\/li>\n<li>Seeds<\/li>\n<li>Nuts<\/li>\n<li>Vegetables<\/li>\n<li>Whole grains<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Amino Acid Chart<\/h2>\n<p>This handy amino acid chart shows you which ones are essential and which are non-essential amino acids.
