Thankfully, my mom believed otherwise. Up until the age of 15, bedtime for my sister and me was 7:30 p.m. That served us well through college. But my relationship with sleep changed in dental school when late nights and even all-nighters became the norm.<\/p>\n<p>When we lost a family member to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/best-at-home-sleep-apnea-test\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"mbg-track-event\" data-track-event-types=\"click\" data-track-type=\"article-link\" data-track-prop-element-id=\"in-body-link\" data-track-prop-label=\"page_type | element_id\" data-track-prop-category=\"Link\" data-track-prop-link=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/best-at-home-sleep-apnea-test\" rel=\"noopener\">sleep apnea<\/a>, healthy sleep (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/15-ways-to-get-high-quality-sleep\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"mbg-track-event\" data-track-event-types=\"click\" data-track-type=\"article-link\" data-track-prop-element-id=\"in-body-link\" data-track-prop-label=\"page_type | element_id\" data-track-prop-category=\"Link\" data-track-prop-link=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/15-ways-to-get-high-quality-sleep\" rel=\"noopener\">good-quality sleep<\/a> for 7-8 hours) took on new significance for me. It became the focal point of my family&#8217;s journey to a healthier lifestyle.\u00a0It also became an important part of my dentistry, and I started incorporating sleep disorder screenings into my practice. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/sleep-health-dental-health\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"mbg-track-event\" data-track-event-types=\"click\" data-track-type=\"article-link\" data-track-prop-element-id=\"in-body-link\" data-track-prop-label=\"page_type | element_id\" data-track-prop-category=\"Link\" data-track-prop-link=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/sleep-health-dental-health\" rel=\"noopener\">Sleep health and dental health are connected<\/a>, after all.)<\/p>\n<p>I now know and understand that getting a good night&#8217;s rest starts from the minute I wake up. From practicing mindfulness through yoga, meditation, and journaling; to making sure I get enough sunlight and respect my circadian rhythm; to nourishing my body with healthy foods and water, there are many pieces to the sleep puzzle.<\/p>\n<p>As a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/hormone-levels-and-sleep\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"mbg-track-event\" data-track-event-types=\"click\" data-track-type=\"article-link\" data-track-prop-element-id=\"in-body-link\" data-track-prop-label=\"page_type | element_id\" data-track-prop-category=\"Link\" data-track-prop-link=\"https:\/\/www.mindbodygreen.com\/articles\/hormone-levels-and-sleep\" rel=\"noopener\">peri-menopausal woman<\/a>, I am also learning to respect hormonal ebbs and flows and their impact on my sleep.
