While that might have turned off other prospective bladers, the longevity expert and endocrinologist was hooked. Not just by the thrill of picking up speed on skates, but by the health benefits of rollerblading, particularly for longevity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s the best thing in life, I think,\u201d says Dr. Comite. \u201cFinding something you love that is actually great for your health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to just loving the feeling of going fast, the reason Dr. Comite personally has been rollerblading a few times a month for three decades is because of the activity\u2019s benefits to both physical and mental health, which go hand in hand with promoting longevity. That\u2019s especially important for Dr. Comite, who runs a <a href=\"https:\/\/comitemd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/comitemd.com\/\">precision medicine clinic<\/a> based on preventing disease and improving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/how-to-increase-healthspan\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/how-to-increase-healthspan\/\">healthspan.<\/a><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<hr\/>\n<p>While\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/roller-skating-mental-benefits\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/roller-skating-mental-benefits\/\">roller skating<\/a> has been picking up a new generation of devotees for a few years now, rollerblading only started enjoying its latest popular renaissance last summer when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/neon-activewear-barbie\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/neon-activewear-barbie\/\">Margot Robbie was spotted blading<\/a>\u00a0while shooting the <em>Barbie<\/em> movie. If you have sensitive joints, that can be hard to do without jumping or running. But rollerblading is low impact, and the ability to pick up speed quickly means you can effectively \u201csprint\u201d without the joint pressure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s a great, suitable exercise for people with joint issues and those who want a gentler workout,\u201d says Dr. Comite. \u201cRollerblading allows you to move side to side. It allows you to use that power. It allows you to do high-intensity training at your will. And it reinforces not only muscle, but bone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And, Dr. Comite points out, rollerblading also works your balance, &#8220;which is something a lot of folks lose as they age.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/balance-and-longevity\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/balance-and-longevity\/\">Balance is also associated with longevity<\/a>, both for preventing injury, and for the way it engages your brain and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/proprioception-exercises\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/proprioception-exercises\/\">proprioception<\/a>, or the ability to locate yourself in space. (Of course, though, falls can happen, so Dr. Comite always recommends wearing guards when blading.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChoosing a gentler form of a workout that hits muscle, balance, flexibility, and proprioception, I mean you almost can&#8217;t do better than that,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Even with all these benefits to your muscles, bones, heart, and brain, Dr. Comite wouldn\u2019t necessarily do the activity if she didn\u2019t love it. But as it is, it\u2019s been a joy-inducing part of her life since she first bombed down that hill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s so much fun, it\u2019s social, you&#8217;re out in nature, you can chat,\u201d Dr. Comite says.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/social-connection-longevity\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/social-connection-longevity\/\">Social connections<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8125471\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8125471\/\">getting outside<\/a>\u00a0have their own mental health benefits for people of all ages.<\/p>\n<p>And really, the best exercise for longevity is the one that you\u2019ll actually do consistently, since getting regular exercise is one of the most important determinants of long-term health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s a sport you can hang on to,\u201d Dr. Comite says. \u201cAnd as long as you wear guards and you&#8217;re cognizant of your ability level, then it&#8217;s a fantastic way to get exercise.
