But is protein powder good for you?<\/p>\n<p>And is it just as good \u2014 or better \u2014 than protein that comes from food?<\/p>\n<p>Here are some things to consider before you invest in a protein powder supplement.<\/p>\n<h2>What Is Protein Powder?<\/h2>\n<p>Protein powder is a concentrated form of protein that results from processing milk or certain plant foods.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking to build muscle or lose weight, protein powders can make it easier to hit your daily protein intake goals (more on the importance of this later).<\/p>\n<p>While there are many different types of protein powder, the majority of protein you\u2019ll find lining the shelves at the supplement store fall into three categories:<\/p>\n<h3>1. Whey protein powder<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/17120234\/is-protein-powder-good-for-you-600-whey.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-162317\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/17120234\/is-protein-powder-good-for-you-600-whey.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/should-you-be-using-whey-protein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Whey protein<\/a> is a fast-digesting protein made from milk \u2014 more specifically, the liquid that\u2019s left over when solids are removed, which is then processed into powder.<\/p>\n<p>There are three varieties of whey protein powder:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne benefit of whey protein is that it is a good source of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/what-are-bcaas-benefits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">branched-chained amino acids<\/a> (BCAAs), which may\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/should-you-be-using-whey-protein\">play a role<\/a> in aiding in muscle growth and recovery,\u201d says Bansari Acharya, R.D.N., registered dietitian nutritionist and contributor at <a href=\"https:\/\/foodlove.com\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FoodLove<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Casein protein powder<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/17120226\/is-protein-powder-good-for-you-600-casein.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-162316\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/17120226\/is-protein-powder-good-for-you-600-casein.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Casein protein\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/benefits-casein\">is also found in milk<\/a>, but unlike whey, it doesn\u2019t dissolve as quickly in your stomach acid, so it\u2019s \u201cdigested and absorbed at a slower rate,\u201d says Acharya. \u201cThe result is a more gradual entry to your muscles, which may lead to muscle mass growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because it\u2019s a slow-digesting protein, casein is especially useful when consumed before bed.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Plant-based protein powder<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/17120219\/is-protein-powder-good-for-you-600-plant.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-162315\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/17120219\/is-protein-powder-good-for-you-600-plant.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Plant-based protein powders are made from plant sources like beans, legumes, seeds, and\/or grains.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/understanding-the-difference-between-casein-whey-and-pea-protein\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pea protein<\/a>, from the yellow split-pea, is one of the most common plant-based powders. \u201cIt contains all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/just-the-essentials-an-insiders-guide-to-amino-acids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">amino acids<\/a>, which includes BCAAs,\u201d says Acharya.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t like the taste of pea protein, your next best bet is soy protein powder.<\/p>\n<p>Soy protein powder is also plant-based, but like whey and casein, it contains enough of all the essential amino acids our bodies need to be considered \u201ccomplete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While soy is naturally rich in health-promoting nutrients like isoflavones, research shows <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24473985\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">these benefits<\/a> are more likely from whole food sources that are minimally processed. This leaves the jury still out if those same benefits can be seen from soy protein powder.<\/p>\n<p>Hemp and rice protein powder are also fairly common but might not be quite as effective as pea or soy. Hemp protein contains omega-3 fatty acids, but it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/examine.com\/supplements\/hemp-protein\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">low in leucine<\/a>\u00a0(the amino primarily responsible for muscle growth), and rice protein lacks a complete amino acid profile.<\/p>\n<p>Protein powders may also be fortified with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/dietary-fiber\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fiber<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/antioxidants\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">antioxidants<\/a>, and vitamins and minerals, but these additional benefits vary between manufacturers, brands, and their specific formulations. That\u2019s why you should always check the labels on any supplement you purchase.<\/p>\n<h2>Is Protein Powder Good for You?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/17120211\/is-protein-powder-good-for-you-600-bag.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-162314\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/17120211\/is-protein-powder-good-for-you-600-bag.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Protein powder is a solid option if you want to up the amount of protein you\u2019re getting each day to help you meet health goals, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/tips-for-building-muscle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">building more muscle<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/will-a-high-protein-diet-help-you-lose-weight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dropping a few pounds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While downing a protein shake before or after a workout won\u2019t automatically equal a lower number on the scale, it adds to the amount of protein in your diet.<\/p>\n<p>We need to consume, at a minimum, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/how-much-protein-do-i-need\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">0.8 grams<\/a> of protein per kilogram of body weight a day \u2014 that\u2019s 54 grams for a person weighing 150 pounds. For those looking to build muscle or lose weight, that number jumps up to around\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5828430\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2.2 grams<\/a>\u00a0per kilogram of body weight.<\/p>\n<p>Increasing that amount can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11838888\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">help your body burn more calories a day<\/a>, which can lead to weight loss.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, protein powder \u201cmay decrease your appetite and help you feel fuller for longer, which can aid in weight loss,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>Protein is shown to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ajcn.nutrition.org\/content\/87\/5\/1558S.long\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">promote satiety<\/a>\u00a0so you feel fuller for longer and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16469977\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decrease ghrelin<\/a>, the hunger hormone.<\/p>\n<p>That said, getting in your protein via a powder might not be a good choice if you\u2019re sensitive or allergic to dairy or soy, or have certain medical conditions that affect your body\u2019s ability to digest extra protein.<\/p>\n<p>And because protein powder doesn\u2019t always taste good on its own, many companies add artificial sweeteners to make it taste better, so always check the ingredient labels.<\/p>\n<h2>How to Incorporate Protein Powder Into Your Diet<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/17120203\/is-protein-powder-good-for-you-600-diet.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-162313\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/17120203\/is-protein-powder-good-for-you-600-diet.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Protein powder supplements should be just that \u2014 a supplement to a healthy diet, not a replacement for nutrient-rich whole foods.<\/p>\n<p>Getting protein from whole food sources is important to get all the nutrients the body needs, such as vitamins, minerals, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/are-you-eating-enough-healthy-fats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">healthy fats<\/a>, and fiber, says Kimszal. \u201cRelying solely on protein powder may limit the number of fresh vegetables in the diet leading to lower consumption of fiber,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So when should you use protein powder?
