data-contrast=\"auto\">What have more than a hundred studies on Wi-Fi and human brain wave modulation found?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You may recall that I\u2019ve addressed how cell phones may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/do-mobile-phones-affect-brain-function\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">affect<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> brain function and how both cell phones and Wi-Fi <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/do-cell-phones-lower-sperm-counts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">may<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/2021\/11\/30\/does-laptop-wi-fi-affect-fertility\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">affect<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> male fertility, but what about the effects of Wi-Fi on brain functioning?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThe possible existence of cognitive effects of RF [radiofrequency] energy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26579940\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">has<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> been one of the more contentious discussions in the forever-contentious issue of whether exposure to RF energy at levels that we all commonly encounter in the environment has any health consequences.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wi-Fi has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23675623\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">called<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> an \u201cuncontrolled global experiment on the health of mankind.\u201d The effects of radiofrequency fields gained new urgency after the World Health Organization officially <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24162060\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">declared<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> cell phone radiation to be \u201ca \u2018possible\u2019 (class 2B) human carcinogen\u201d based on brain tumor risks, but its decision<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">has<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> no relevance to possible health effects of Wi-Fi, for which the exposure conditions are very different\u2026\u201d As you can see below and at 0:56 in my video <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/friday-favorites-does-wi-fi-radiation-affect-brain-function\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>\u00a0Friday Favorites: <\/strong><\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/friday-favorites-does-wi-fi-radiation-affect-brain-function\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Does Wi-Fi Radiation Affect Brain Function?<\/strong><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> we may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24162060\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">absorb<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> one hundred times less radiation in a typical exposure to Wi-Fi compared to cell phones, but you don\u2019t know if there are effects until you put it to the test.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\"> <br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-93859\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/07\/0-56.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1050\" 1920px\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cTo date, more than 100 studies have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26579940\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">published<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> on effects of RF energy on electroencephalograms (EEGs)\u201d of human brain wave patterns. \u201cWhile the results are mixed, a fairly consistent finding is that short (10\u201320 min) RF energy exposures to the head produce small, but statistically significant, changes in the EEG of resting and sleeping subjects\u2026.[and] most health agencies acknowledge these findings,\u201d so the question is: <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What do you do with that information?<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> \u201cFor example, a recent review sponsored by the European Commission <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">concluded<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that \u2018relevance of the small physiological changes remains unclear and mechanistic explanation is still lacking.\u2019\u201d We don\u2019t even know how it\u2019s happening at all. Some have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22496073\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">suggested<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> it\u2019s an artifact of the test and that \u201cEEG wire leads can act as antennas that carry RF energy to the scalp, skull bone, and brain\u201d\u2014in effect, contributing to the changes that they\u2019ve been set up to measure.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Either way, from what researchers have found, you don\u2019t <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26600173\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">see<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the kinds of neurocognitive effects with Wi-Fi exposure that you do with cell phones. For example, \u201cno measurable effects of acute Wi-Fi exposure were found on\u2026reaction time in the psychomotor vigilance test\u2026or objective measures of sustained attention.\u201d Now, these results were from testing 2.4 gigahertz Wi-Fi, but if anything, we would expect even lower levels of exposure from the newer 5 gigahertz Wi-Fi \u201cdue to the shallower penetration depth.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Though, more accurately, \u201ca person who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26579940\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">spends<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> hours a day glued to a smartphone or tablet may well experience all sorts of neurocognitive effects\u2014from the use of the technology, not from RF exposure,\u201d not from the radiation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25160783\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">is<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> a large literature about the health implications of these new technologies for young people\u2014but it\u2019s about the content. For instance, \u201csexually explicit material is now indiscriminately available to youth, and studies have linked pornography with a number of negative health effects.\u201d We need to ask ourselves as a society what effect that may be having. Girls and boys are \u201cbeing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25002113\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">exposed<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to a \u2018colossal\u2019 amount of digital media on smartphones,\u201d which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26251980\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">makes<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> access to pornographic material all too easy, cheap, and anonymous.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cYoung people can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26951609\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">watch<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> pornography in school and other public places as well as in the more private setting of the home or bedroom,\u201d and researchers have only just begun cataloguing the effects this may have on young people\u2019s attitudes, behaviors, and relationships.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Most college students these days <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25160783\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">report<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> seeing online pornography as a minor, before age 18. Of 1,500 high school boys surveyed, the vast majority <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26251980\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">admit<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to accessing pornographic websites, with nearly one in three for more than an hour at a time. What is that teaching the next generation?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As you can see below and at 3:50 in my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/does-wi-fi-radiation-affect-brain-function\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">video<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, after <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25420868\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">sitting<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> through and content-coding 400 videos from mainstream internet porn sites, researchers found that more than a third of the videos displayed acts of physical violence against women, such as gagging or choking. Does watching such material lead to sexually aggressive behaviors? Researchers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21046607\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">followed<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> 1,500 10- to 15-year-olds for years to see if there was a link between intentional exposure to such material and later sexually aggressive behaviors, such as sexual assault. They \u201cfound that intentional exposure to violent x-rated material over time predicted an almost 6-fold increase in the odds of self-reported sexually aggressive behavior.\u201d But, which came first? \u201cA major difficulty with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mja.com.au\/journal\/2012\/196\/9\/internet-pornography-and-adolescent-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">interpreting<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> most research in this field is that adolescents predisposed to earlier and more varied sexual engagement may be the ones who will seek exposure to sexual content through the media.\u201d They may be <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">drawn<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to that material in the first place, so no cause-and-effect link can be established.
