Sometimes, you can find yourself doing a lot of standing around for several hours. And believe it or not, these long hours on your feet can leave you feeling sore and fatigued. But is standing a workout?<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barpathfitness.com\/aboutus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.barpathfitness.com\/aboutus\">Heather Hamilton<\/a>, ACSM certified exercise physiologist and cofounder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barpathfitness.com\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.barpathfitness.com\/\">Barpath Fitness<\/a>, the answer is: Not so much.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStanding for a long period of time can be physically demanding and may contribute to increased energy expenditure compared to sitting or sedentary activities; however, it is generally not considered a formal workout in the traditional sense,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>When looking to check the box of \u201cwhat makes a workout,\u201d Hamilton is looking for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/best-workouts-heart-health\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/best-workouts-heart-health\/\">activities that elevate your heart rate<\/a> and actions that encourage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/mobility-vs-flexibility\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/mobility-vs-flexibility\/\">flexibility and mobility<\/a>, among other things. \u201cStanding alone does not elevate your heart rate significantly, nor does it challenge your cardiovascular system in the same way that aerobic exercises like running, cycling, or swimming do,\u201d she says. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/cardio-exercises-for-longevity\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/cardio-exercises-for-longevity\/\">Cardiovascular exercises<\/a> are important for improving heart health, stamina, and overall endurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hamilton also notes that standing is just targeting the muscles of your lower body without enough resistance or intensity to effectively strengthen and build muscle mass. It can also provide some benefits for your cardiovascular health by promoting blood circulation and preventing prolonged periods of inactivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>How to deal with soreness from standing a lot<\/h2>\n<p>Even though it\u2019s not technically a workout, sometimes prolonged standing can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/late-muscle-soreness\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/late-muscle-soreness\/\">make you feel sore<\/a>, so, what gives? Hamilton explains that this can be from a long list of reasons like muscle fatigue, lack of movement, or event poor posture. \u201cThe muscles are constantly working to maintain an upright posture and support your body weight, which can lead to soreness and discomfort,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, standing in one position for a long period of time\u2014looking at you, all-day music festival attendees\u2014restricts blood flow and reduces your body\u2019s muscle contractions. When this happens, Hamilton says, your body gets a buildup of waste products like lactic acid in the muscles, contributing to soreness and stiffness.<\/p>\n<p>You may also be feeling sore after standing because of poor posture or conditioning. Hamilton says that poor posture (like slouching or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/everyday-habits-that-hurt-your-ankles\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/everyday-habits-that-hurt-your-ankles\/\">standing and putting added pressure on one leg<\/a>) while standing can put added stress on certain muscles and joints, which makes us feel sore the next day. \u201cIf you&#8217;re not accustomed to standing for long periods, your muscles may not be conditioned to handle the prolonged demand,\u201d she says. \u201cLack of strength and endurance in the relevant muscle groups can contribute to soreness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Combat those long days of standing by intentionally setting aside time to move around, stretch, and even hydrate.
