But as you soak up those rays, another type of protection should be on your radar as well: UTI prevention. Your risk of getting a urinary tract infection, or UTI, actually goes up in the summer, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dr.yanabarbalat\/?hl=en\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dr.yanabarbalat\/?hl=en\">Yana Barbalat, MD<\/a>, a board-certified urologist based in Needham, Mass.<\/div>\n<p>UTIs happen when there\u2019s an overgrowth of bacteria from the anal area in the urethra, bladder, or kidneys which can lead to nasty symptoms like painful and frequent urination, pelvic pain, and nausea. Since women\u2019s urethras are shorter and closer to the anus than in men, the infections are more likely to occur in females versus males\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au\/health\/conditionsandtreatments\/urinary-tract-infections-uti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au\/health\/conditionsandtreatments\/urinary-tract-infections-uti\">one in two women vs. one in 20 men will get a UTI<\/a> in their lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>While it\u2019s not known for sure why UTI risk is higher in the summer, there are some well-established theories, according to Dr. Barbalat. \u201cOne reason is lack of hydration,&#8221; she says. &#8220;People are more likely to get dehydrated in the summer. If you\u2019re dehydrated, you\u2019re not peeing as often. When you urinate, you\u2019re flushing the system of bacteria. Stay hydrated<\/h3>\n<p>Research shows that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/more-water-fewer-utis-2018101515035\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/more-water-fewer-utis-2018101515035\">drinking at least 1.5 liters of fluid per day<\/a> decreases your risk of getting a UTI\u2014and try to stick to water, because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michiganurology.com\/the-effect-of-sugary-and-alcoholic-beverages-on-your-bladder-and-what-to-consider-as-alternatives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.michiganurology.com\/the-effect-of-sugary-and-alcoholic-beverages-on-your-bladder-and-what-to-consider-as-alternatives\/\">sugary beverages may actually increase UTI risk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Don\u2019t hold your pee, especially after sex<\/h3>\n<p>Holding in your urine gives the bacteria more time to stick to the bladder wall. Dr. Barbalat recommends flushing your system after sexual activity by peeing and drinking a glass of water.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Stay dry down there<\/h3>\n<p>Don\u2019t sit around in wet bathing suits or sweaty underwear and wear loose-fitting clothes when possible.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Wipe properly<\/h3>\n<p>Always wipe from front to back after going to the bathroom. Doing the opposite increases the chances of unwanted bacteria getting into your urinary tract.<\/p>\n<h2>What about cranberry juice?<\/h2>\n<p>If you are prone to UTIs or are going to be spending a lot of time doing activities that raise your risk, Dr. Barbalat says cranberry supplements are one of the best ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12121581\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12121581\/\">significantly reduce UTIs,<\/a> especially in women with recurrent infections. \u201cThere is really good data that cranberry protects against UTIs,&#8221; she says. &#8220;It\u2019s the only holistic preventative supported by robust data and guidelines.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, going to the grocery store and grabbing a bottle of cranberry juice won\u2019t do the trick. Proanthocyanidins, or PACs, are the active molecule in cranberry that prevents bacteria from sticking to the urethra and bladder wall, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nutritionaloutlook.com\/view\/more-urologists-are-recommending-cranberry-pacs-reducing-utis-heres-why\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.nutritionaloutlook.com\/view\/more-urologists-are-recommending-cranberry-pacs-reducing-utis-heres-why\">clinical data has shown you need 36 mg daily<\/a> of the compound to help prevent UTIs, says Dr. Barbalat.
