However, you may have heard rumors swirling around that some flight attendants\u2014who are privy to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/travel-mistakes\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/travel-mistakes\/\">few insider secrets<\/a> that airlines don\u2019t want you to know\u2014refuse to drink the hot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/hydrated-when-traveling\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/hydrated-when-traveling\/\">water on airplanes<\/a> due to concerns over hygiene and safety.<\/div>\n<p>That said, how \u201cbad\u201d is it really to drink coffee in-flight\u2026 and should you avoid it at all costs?<\/p>\n<h2>How (un)clean is the water on airplanes used to brew coffee?<\/h2>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roosevelthouse.hunter.cuny.edu\/?faculty=charles-platkin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.roosevelthouse.hunter.cuny.edu\/?faculty=charles-platkin\">Charles Platkin, PhD, JD, MPH<\/a>, Executive Director at <a href=\"https:\/\/foodmedcenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/foodmedcenter.org\/\">Center for Food as Medicine<\/a> and researcher behind a <a href=\"https:\/\/dietdetective.com\/airline-water-study-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/dietdetective.com\/airline-water-study-2019\/\">2019 airplane water study<\/a>, in-flight water quality hinges upon many variables\u2014including if it\u2019s a domestic or international airline. With the latter, things can be (pun alert) up in the air since regulations will vary from one country to the next.<\/p>\n<p>He says that the key factors that will heavily influence how clean the airplane drinking water really is include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Where the tanks are filled<\/li>\n<li>How clean the tank and pipes\/vehicles transporting the water to the plane are<\/li>\n<li>When the tank was cleaned last<\/li>\n<li>The specific airline and route at hand<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For instance, a <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26529000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26529000\/\">2015 study<\/a> in the <em>International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health<\/em> found that long-haul flights were found to be \u201csignificantly poorer in terms of microbial quality\u201d than short-haul flights. Moreover, the water service vehicle had a significant impact on the microbial load of the water on board the aircraft. At any rate, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28114359\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28114359\/\">Studies<\/a> have shown there are trace elements\u2014or sometimes significantly more\u2014of bacteria, feces, and so forth,\u201d Dr. Platkin says.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cStudies have shown there are trace elements\u2014or sometimes significantly more\u2014of bacteria, feces, and so forth,\u201d Dr. Platkin says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Per the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2015-10\/documents\/aircraft_drinking_water_rule_training_part_1_introduction_pdf.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2015-10\/documents\/aircraft_drinking_water_rule_training_part_1_introduction_pdf.pdf\">Aircraft Drinking Water Rule<\/a> (ADWR) implemented by the EPA in 2011, airlines are required to disinfect and clear out each aircraft\u2019s water tank four times a year and test for coliform bacteria and potential <em>E. coli<\/em> contamination. As gross as it sounds, the coliform bacteria is unlikely to cause illness on its own. Instead, its presence in drinking water may indicate that pathogens including but not limited to <em>E. coli<\/em> may be present. Although the ADWR is in place to help ensure water\u2019s potability, Dr. Platkin lacks faith in the systems as they currently stand. \u201cThese regulations have no bite,\u201d he warns, noting that he\u2019s yet to see evidence of penalties for airlines that don\u2019t comply with the testing schedules or fail these routine checks.<\/p>\n<p>TL;DR: The water used to brew your in-flight coffee is probably less potable than you\u2019d hope it to be.<\/p>\n<h2>Is it unsafe to drink airplane coffee in-flight?<\/h2>\n<p>Based on his findings, Dr. Platkin gives a hard pass not only to airplane coffee, but also to the sink water in the cabin\u2019s restroom. \u201cI won\u2019t even touch the water to wash my hands,\u201d he shares, opting to use hand sanitizer or wipes instead. While this might be an extreme approach for most people, it\u2019s his personal choice\u2014and one that you don\u2019t necessarily have to follow. He says that there\u2019s a chance you could get a slight stomach ache from drinking contaminated coffee in-flight, with the caveat that this is based on anecdotal rather than hard evidence. (He also mentions that consuming caffeine at a higher elevation is likely to dehydrate you more quickly than if you were on the ground, so you\u2019ll definitely want to take care to stay hydrated while flying.) \u201cI worry more about flight attendants and the flight crew than the passengers,\u201d he adds. One cup is unlikely to trigger intense symptoms or side effects. Yet if you prefer to err on the side of caution, stick to bottled water and\/or canned drinks to quench your thirst.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, Dr. Platkin gives the green light to ice since it\u2019s not usually made on board with the (potentially) sus water.
