Get their answers below.<\/p>\n<h2>Is there a best time of day to walk?<\/h2>\n<p>The answer: Yes and no. \u201cExposure to fresh air and natural light over the course of the day is an integral part of a healthy lifestyle,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rebecca-robbins.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.rebecca-robbins.com\/about\">Rebecca Robbins, PhD<\/a>, sleep expert at sleep-tech company <a href=\"https:\/\/clicks.trx-hub.com\/xid\/leafgroup_ca5e0_wellgood?q=https%3A%2F%2Fouraring.sjv.io%2Fc%2F2372336%2F1408413%2F16760%3FsubId1%3DSTMSLS-987885%26u%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fouraring.com%252F&amp;p=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wellandgood.com%2Fbest-time-to-walk%2F&amp;event_type=click\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/ouraring.com\/\">Oura<\/a>. Since you\u2019re most sensitive to natural sunlight within one hour of waking, morning walks are [usually best],\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>However, just because a morning walk gives you the most nighttime snoozing perks doesn\u2019t mean that you shouldn\u2019t take a walk if you can\u2019t do it in the morning. In fact, a midday or evening walk each boast their own benefits. Some people can exercise in the morning without eating, but others might get nauseous. The key is understanding your body.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>The effects of midday walks<\/h2>\n<h3>Benefits<\/h3>\n<p>According to Dr. Holliday-Bell, taking a midday walk can get you out of the post-lunch slump because getting sunlight in your eyes helps to energize you. \u201cMost of us have this midday [decline] in alertness,\u201d she says. \u201cA great way to counteract that is by getting out into natural sunlight because\u2026it stimulates you to feel more awake and energetic,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Soto also points out that a midday walk would be great for folks whose jobs aren\u2019t physical. \u201cIf you have a job where you&#8217;re sitting down a lot, just getting up and moving in the middle of the day helps break up that sedentary part of your day,\u201d says Soto. This can help fight the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/sitting-for-long-periods-of-time\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/sitting-for-long-periods-of-time\/\">negative effects of being stationary<\/a> for too long.<\/p>\n<h3>Potential downsides<\/h3>\n<p>Soto cautions that you shouldn\u2019t try to replace lunch with a walk\u2014because, you know, one\u2019s a meal and one isn\u2019t. \u201cSometimes, I see that people will skip lunch in an effort to move their body or go out for a walk,\u201d Soto says. \u201cWe <em>never<\/em> want to skip meals, so I see that as a downfall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/marcus_runs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/marcus_runs\/\">Marcus Brown<\/a>, a marathon runner, running coach, and Oura member, says he also notices that sometimes his clients find midday walks more stressful than helpful. \u201cTaking a midday walk may disrupt workflow or require rearranging tasks, which can impact productivity,\u201d he says. If this is you, remember that even a five-minute walk would be helpful to your stress levels. (Plus, work will still be there when you get back.)<\/p>\n<h2>The effects of evening walks<\/h2>\n<h3>Benefits<\/h3>\n<p>Taking a walk in the evening can help you unwind, says Dr. Holliday-Bell. \u201cWalking in the evening can improve mood, be relaxing, and decrease stress, especially after work,\u201d she says, adding that \u201cdecreasing stress and improving mood can be conducive to sleep.\u201d As functional medicine doctor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jillcarnahan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.jillcarnahan.com\/\">Jill Carnahan, MD,<\/a> previously told Well+Good, a late walk can\u00a0lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol, and regulate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/regulate-your-nervous-system\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/regulate-your-nervous-system\/\">sympathetic nervous system<\/a>,<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/couple-walking-together\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/couple-walking-together\/\">Adding a partner or loved one<\/a> to this ritual can maximize these mood-boosting benefits even further, and give you a low-stress time to connect after all the work is done for the day.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, points out Soto, taking a post-dinner walk \u201cdefinitely helps with digestion.\u201d That\u2019s because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/walking-after-eating\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/walking-after-eating\/\">walking actually speeds up the process by which your food is broken down<\/a> and used for nutrients. (The more ya know.)<\/p>\n<h3>Potential downsides<\/h3>\n<p>Depending on where you live, safety concerns might keep you from wandering your neighborhood alone after dark. \u201cWalking in poorly lit areas or areas with potential safety risks can pose challenges during evening walks,\u201d Brown says.<\/p>\n<p>Also, when the sun goes down earlier, \u201cIt can be useful to walk in the evenings around sunset so our internal rhythm gets a cue to start the transition to sleep,\u201d says Dr. Robbins. However, as Dr. Holliday-Bell caveats, \u201cSummer months might offer <em>too<\/em> much sunlight for this to be a good time for an evening walk.\u201d She suggests limiting your sunlight exposure to two hours before your bedtime.<\/p>\n<h2>Choosing the walking routine that\u2019s right for you<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re in the middle of planning or changing up your walking routine, Brown suggests considering the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Personal schedule:<\/strong> Find a time that works most naturally with your daily routine. This will help with consistency.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Energy levels:<\/strong> Ask yourself when <em>you<\/em> feel most energized and motivated to move.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Goals:<\/strong> \u201cDetermine whether you prioritize morning energy, midday mental breaks, or evening relaxation,\u201d says Brown.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lastly, you want to \u201ckeep it fun,\u201d Brown adds. \u201cSee if you can get others to join you. Keeping each other accountable and making it social can help make it enjoyable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Above all, though, it bears repeating: The <em>best<\/em> time to walk is whenever you\u2019re doing it.
