{"id":5317,"date":"2023-07-04T20:35:05","date_gmt":"2023-07-04T13:35:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/loudhdtv.com\/?p=5317"},"modified":"2023-07-04T20:35:05","modified_gmt":"2023-07-04T13:35:05","slug":"attempts-by-big-sugar-to-manipulate-the-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/loudhdtv.com\/?p=5317","title":{"rendered":"Attempts by Big Sugar to Manipulate the Science\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cCorporations are legally <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27098491\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">required<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">maximize<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> shareholder profits and therefore have to oppose public health policies that could threaten profits.\u201d That\u2019s just how the system is set up. \u201cUnequivocal, longstanding evidence shows that, to achieve this, diverse industries with products that can damage health have worked systematically to subvert the scientific process.\u201d As I discuss in my video<a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/flashback-friday-sugar-industry-attempt-to-manipulate-the-science\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <strong>Flashback Friday: Sugar Industry Attemtps to Manipulate the Science<\/strong><\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, internal documents <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/480900-a-suggested-program-for-the-cane-and-beet-sugar\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">showed<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that Big Sugar was concerned that health food \u201cfaddists\u201d were becoming an active menace to its industry. Sugar was under attack, \u201cand many of the poor unfortunate public swallow the misinformation broadcast by the propagandists.\u201d For example, in his book <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pure, White and Deadly<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, John Yudkin <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/PureWhiteAndDeadly19721986ocr\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">says<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, \u201cAll of the propaganda, inspired or otherwise, [says]\u2026that sugar is a non-essential food.\u201d How dare anyone say sugar is a non-essential food! Next, they\u2019ll be saying sugar isn\u2019t really food at all. The sugar industry\u2019s line? \u201cSugar <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/0968000476902140?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">is<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> a cheap, safe food,\u201d and that came from the founder and chair of Harvard\u2019s nutrition department, Fredrick Stare, long <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unz.com\/print\/SaturdayRev-1978aug-00010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">known<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> as \u201cHarvard\u2019s sugar-pushing nutritionist.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Not only did the sugar industry try to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25756179\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">influence<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the direction of dental research, but it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27617709\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">did<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the same with research on heart disease, paying Stare and colleagues to write a review that was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/5339697\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">published<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in the <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">New England Journal of Medicine<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in 1967 to help downplay any risk from sugar. Now, to be fair, that was five years before we even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/4111826\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">realized<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> triglycerides were also an independent risk factor beyond just cholesterol. The main reason that attention stayed focused on saturated fat is not because of the might of the sugar industry. There just weren\u2019t as much data to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23407724\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">support<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> sugar\u2019s role in heart disease. In fact, the even more powerful meat and dairy industries loved the anti-sugar message. Who do you think sponsored Yudkin? In fact, in the acknowledgements at the beginning of <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pure, White and Deadly<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/PureWhiteAndDeadly19721986ocr\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">thanks<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> all of the food and drug companies that had provided him with such constant generous support. Who paid for Yudkin\u2019s speaking tour? The egg industry, of course, to try to take some heat off of cholesterol.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hegsted, one of the co-authors of the funded review, wasn\u2019t exactly an industry cheerleader. He <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/10940324\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">recommended<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> people cut down on all of the risky stuff and eat \u201cless meat, less fat, less saturated fat, less cholesterol, less sugar, less salt, and more fruits and vegetables, unsaturated fat and cereal products\u2014especially whole grain cereals.\u201d But, it wasn\u2019t the sugar industry that got him fired for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2016\/09\/12\/sugar-industry-harvard-research\/https:\/www.statnews.com\/2016\/09\/12\/sugar-industry-harvard-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">speaking<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> truth to power\u2014it was the beef industry.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The sugar industry was able to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27617709\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">conceal<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> its funding because the <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">New England Journal of Medicine<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> didn\u2019t require disclosure of conflicts of interest until 17 years later. These muckraking researchers suggest that \u201cpolicymaking committees should consider giving less weight to food industry\u2013funded studies,\u201d but why is the food industry funding studies at all? When it comes to the corporate manipulation of research, \u201cultimately, conflicts of interest need to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/scholar_lookup?journal=Stanford+Law+and+Policy+Review&amp;title=Corporate+Manipulation+of+Research:+Strategies+are+Similar+across+Five+Industries&amp;author=J+White&amp;author=LA+Bero&amp;volume=21&amp;publication_year=2010&amp;pages=105-34&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">eliminated<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, not just managed\u201d and disclosed.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cChange will not occur until public health researchers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27098491\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">refuse<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to take money from the ultraprocessed food industry.\u201d Period. \u201cIt worked for tobacco,\u201d and many prestigious medical and public health institutions have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/scholar_lookup?journal=Stanford+Law+and+Policy+Review&amp;title=Corporate+Manipulation+of+Research:+Strategies+are+Similar+across+Five+Industries&amp;author=J+White&amp;author=LA+Bero&amp;volume=21&amp;publication_year=2010&amp;pages=105-34&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">instituted<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> bans on tobacco-industry funding.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Can\u2019t scientists <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27098491\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">remain<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> objective and impartial even in the face of all of that cash, though? Apparently not, as industry-funded research has been shown to be up to 88 times more likely to produce outcomes favorable to funders. What a surprise. Do we think corporations are in the business of just handing out free money?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The classic example is the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cspinet.org\/sites\/default\/files\/attachment\/lift_the_veil_intro.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">accepted<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> a million-dollar grant from Coca-Cola.
