I\u2019ll usually reach for my second serving before noon, and perhaps another (and maybe even <em>another<\/em>) depending on the day at hand.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re anything like me\u2014or perhaps even go beyond a handful of cups of coffee or caffeinated bevs per day\u2014it\u2019s essential to know how much caffeine is too much. Sure, your body will probably let you know via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/too-much-caffeine\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/too-much-caffeine\/\">jitters, jumpiness, or trouble sleeping<\/a>\u2026 but is there a precise limit at which caffeine consumption turns toxic?<\/p>\n<p>To scope out details on the potential for caffeine poisoning, we consulted <a href=\"https:\/\/wexnermedical.osu.edu\/find-a-doctor\/edward-boyer-md-phd-127014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/wexnermedical.osu.edu\/find-a-doctor\/edward-boyer-md-phd-127014\">Edward Boyer, MD, PhD<\/a>, an emergency medicine physician specializing in medical toxicology at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.<\/p>\n<h2>Caffeine sensitivity vs. caffeine poisoning<\/h2>\n<p>First, it\u2019s worth knowing the difference between signs of caffeine sensitivity versus full-scale, all-hands-on-deck toxicity. \u201cA poor reaction to caffeine would include jitteriness, as well as hypervigilance and increased urination,\u201d Dr. Boyer says. Caffeine poisoning, on the other hand, \u201cis characterized by an\u2014often dramatically\u2014elevated heart rate, very low blood pressure, vomiting, and seizures.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cA poor reaction to caffeine would include jitteriness, as well as hypervigilance and increased urination,\u201d Dr. Boyer says. (Perhaps you love your daily java but adverse symptoms tend to kick in if you drink it on an empty stomach, or by the time you reach your third cup of the day.) The amount of caffeine in your brew of choice will vary based on many factors\u2014including but not limited to your brewing method and water temperature. Yet on average, you can anticipate ingesting somewhere around the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/in-depth\/caffeine\/art-20049372\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/in-depth\/caffeine\/art-20049372\">following amounts<\/a> per serving:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>8-ounces brewed coffee: 96 milligrams<\/li>\n<li>1-ounce espresso: 64 milligrams<\/li>\n<li>8-ounces instant coffee: 62 milligrams<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, standard coffee isn\u2019t the only source of caffeine you may sip on a given day. Decaf coffee contains traces of caffeine as well, at approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/caffeine-in-decaf-coffee\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/caffeine-in-decaf-coffee\/\">15 milligrams<\/a> per 16-ounce cup. White, green, and black tea will contain anywhere from <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19007524\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19007524\/\">14 to 62 milligrams<\/a> per serving, and decaffeinated tea may contain up to 12 grams of caffeine per serving. Then, there are energy drinks, which typically pack anywhere from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4682602\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4682602\/\">80 to 150 milligrams<\/a> of caffeine per eight ounces: the equivalent of two 12-ounce cans of caffeinated soda.<\/p>\n<p>It could be worth doing some mental math to see how much caffeine you consume in a given day to ensure that your habits stay within a healthy range. \u201cSome authorities [including the FDA] recommend that individuals limit their caffeine intake to 400 milligrams a day,\u201d Dr. Boyer shares. Of course, this limit will vary based on how well you tolerate caffeine.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>The bottom line<\/h2>\n<p>Dr. Boyer notes that caffeine poisoning has become more common in recent years, especially due to the increased consumption of high-caffeine energy drinks and pure caffeine supplements. However, it\u2019s not all doom and gloom: \u201cSevere caffeine poisoning, which can be lethal, remains uncommon,\u201d he notes. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK532910\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK532910\/\">data from the National Library of Medicine<\/a>, less than three dozen deaths from caffeine poisoning have been reported over the past decade. Plus, immediate medical treatment at the onset of caffeine poisoning\u2014signaled by a massive spike in heart rate, vomiting, and seizures\u2014offers highly favorable outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>These points considered, you (literally and figuratively) shouldn\u2019t lose sleep over enjoying one or even a few cups of coffee per day. But if you experience any telltale symptoms associated with caffeine intake\u2014or realize that you may be teetering a little too close to that 400-milligram daily upper limit\u2014it could be worth scaling back your sips.
