and the <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/body\/24501-frontal-lobe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/body\/24501-frontal-lobe\">frontal lobe<\/a>, which governs executive functioning, corresponds to comprehension and understanding.<\/p>\n<p>And don\u2019t worry if reading books on the page isn\u2019t necessarily your thing because there are benefits to consuming audiobooks too, says Dr. Rapp. The brain processes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/reading-versus-listening\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/reading-versus-listening\/\">reading vs. listening<\/a> much the same WAY, except the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK10900\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK10900\/\">auditory cortex<\/a> is involved to process speech and sounds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The benefits of \u2018keeping your brain sharp\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Every time you read, you strengthen the neural connections in your brain, which makes them happen more easily and efficiently. Dr. Rapp explains that while the brain isn\u2019t a muscle, \u201cin some sort of basic way, it works a lot like your muscles in the sense that it benefits from repetition.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. Increased longevity<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Continuously exercising these systems to keep them in good working order has major longevity benefits, too, bookworms\u2014there\u2019s some research that says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0277953616303689\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0277953616303689\">reading helps you live longer<\/a>. These benefits come from the association of reading with stress relief and preserving and increasing cognitive function.<\/p>\n<p>One of these benefits is less or slower cognitive decline. A study published in 2016 in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/journal\/social-science-and-medicine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/journal\/social-science-and-medicine\"><em>Social Science &amp; Medicine <\/em><\/a>found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0277953616303689?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0277953616303689?via%3Dihub\">book readers had a 20-percent reduction in mortality<\/a> compared to those who didn&#8217;t read books at all. Using data from the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/hrs.isr.umich.edu\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/hrs.isr.umich.edu\/about\">Health and Retirement Study<\/a>, researchers analyzed 3,635 participants over age 50. Although the study didn\u2019t examine the difference between print and audio books, it did find that fiction books conferred more of a benefit than reading magazines and newspapers.<\/p>\n<p>Another longitudinal study published online in 2020 by the Cambridge University Press found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/international-psychogeriatrics\/article\/reading-activity-prevents-longterm-decline-in-cognitive-function-in-older-people-evidence-from-a-14year-longitudinal-study\/3AE2A49067C17A4140EEBB49F394AACC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/international-psychogeriatrics\/article\/reading-activity-prevents-longterm-decline-in-cognitive-function-in-older-people-evidence-from-a-14year-longitudinal-study\/3AE2A49067C17A4140EEBB49F394AACC\">reading protected cognitive function<\/a> among 1,962 Taiwanese adults over age 64, who were examined over a period of 14 years. They found that among people of all education levels, reading often was associated with less cognitive decline.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. Lowers stress<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>One other key advantage of reading books is the utility reading provides as a stress-relieving activity, experts say. Develops and strengthens social connections<\/h3>\n<p>There\u2019s a reason the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/oral-tradition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/oral-tradition\">oral tradition<\/a> of storytelling has persisted among humans for so long\u2014bonding over stories, whether fictional or real, connects us. He mentions that he regularly talks with his daughter about the <em>Star Wars <\/em>books she enjoys, and these discussions about the characters and plots strengthen their bond.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you\u2019re shy or introverted, sharing a common interest with someone else may make it a bit easier to strike up a conversation, whether in-person or online.
