Let\u2019s explore where they should come from.<\/p>\n<h2>How Many Calories Should You Eat While Breastfeeding?<\/h2>\n<p>Mothers who are nursing require an additional 330 calories in the first six months and 400 calories in the second, per day, per infant, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/breastfeeding\/breastfeeding-special-circumstances\/diet-and-micronutrients\/maternal-diet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>\u00a0(CDC).<\/p>\n<p>These calorie counts assume a healthy pre-pregnancy weight, and represent about two-thirds of the calories needed to make enough milk for most babies. (The remainder comes from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatright.org\/health\/pregnancy\/breastfeeding-and-formula\/losing-weight-while-breastfeeding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weight gained during pregnancy<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome nursing mothers will lose weight during breastfeeding due to the high energy demands required to produce breastmilk,\u201d says Krista Maguire, R.D.N., senior nutrition manager for BODi. \u201cFat stores can be used to fuel this production as well as help make up the fat content of your baby\u2019s milk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the exact number of calories needed to breastfeed can depend on a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/breastfeeding\/breastfeeding-special-circumstances\/diet-and-micronutrients\/maternal-diet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">variety of factors<\/a>, including the mother\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/the-problem-with-bmi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">body mass index<\/a>\u00a0(BMI) and activity level, and whether the baby is receiving any additional forms of sustenance, such as formula or baby food.<\/p>\n<h2>Best Foods to Eat While Breastfeeding<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/21114302\/what-to-eat-while-breastfeeding-600-foods.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-161448\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/21114302\/what-to-eat-while-breastfeeding-600-foods.png\" alt=\"mom reaching for veggies holding baby | What to Eat While Breastfeeding\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.myplate.gov\/life-stages\/pregnancy-and-breastfeeding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USDA guidelines<\/a>\u00a0on what to eat while breastfeeding mostly resemble those for any healthy diet, with a few additional considerations.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Protein<\/h3>\n<p>Lean meat, eggs, dairy, beans, lentils, and a variety of seafood that is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/102331\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">low in mercury<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Whole fruits (as opposed to dried fruit, juices, jams, etc.)<\/h3>\n<p>Apples, berries, oranges, peaches, pears, and bananas.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Vegetables<\/h3>\n<p>Broccoli, potatoes, beets, spinach, carrots, peppers, and brussels sprouts.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Whole grains<\/h3>\n<p>Wild rice, oats, rye, spelt, and whole-wheat bread and pasta.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Low-fat dairy<\/h3>\n<p>Milk, yogurt, cheese.<\/p>\n<p>The most important thing for breastfeeding moms is to maintain a well-balanced diet, says NorthShore University HealthSystem OB\/GYN\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.northshore.org\/apps\/findadoctor\/physicians\/ann-elizabeth-bryant%20borders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Ann Borders<\/a>. Maguire adds that mothers should start by getting at least 1,800 calories per day via a variety of the above foods to ensure their babies get a full range of nutrients.<\/p>\n<p>There are some specifics to be mindful of when getting those nutrients, due to 1. Their importance for the infant, and\/or 2. Their insufficiency in some lactating women. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Protein<\/li>\n<li>Omega-3 fatty acids<\/li>\n<li>Calcium<\/li>\n<li>Vitamin D<\/li>\n<li>B vitamins (including folate)<\/li>\n<li>Iodine<\/li>\n<li>Choline<\/li>\n<li>Magnesium<\/li>\n<li>Potassium<\/li>\n<li>Dietary fiber<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/breastfeeding\/breastfeeding-special-circumstances\/diet-and-micronutrients\/maternal-diet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the CDC<\/a>, a mother\u2019s need for iodine and choline in particular increases during lactation. So, the USDA recommends getting 290 mcg of iodine and 550 mg of choline a day during the first year of motherhood. Sources of iodine include dairy, eggs, seafood, and iodized table salt, while choline can be found in eggs, dairy, meats, and some seafood and legumes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bonus tip:<\/strong>\u00a0Diversifying your food sources, as Borders and Maguire advise, has the added benefit of exposing your child to a fuller range of tastes and flavors. That may make them more receptive to new foods later in their development.<\/p>\n<h2>Foods to Avoid While Breastfeeding<\/h2>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5383635\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017 literature review<\/a>\u00a0didn\u2019t find any foods that mothers should avoid while breastfeeding, excepting those that elicited adverse reactions from the infant. That said, lactating mothers are best advised to limit their consumption of the following items.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Alcohol:<\/strong>\u00a0abstinence is ideal, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/breastfeeding\/breastfeeding-special-circumstances\/vaccinations-medications-drugs\/alcohol.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one drink per day<\/a>\u00a0is the maximum, waiting at least 2 hours before nursing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Caffeine:<\/strong> maximum 300 mg per day (approx. 2 to 3 cups coffee)<\/li>\n<li><strong>High-mercury fish:<\/strong>\u00a0skip; instead opt for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wicworks.fns.usda.gov\/resources\/advice-about-eating-fish-what-pregnant-and-breastfeeding-women-and-parents-should-know\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2 to 3 servings<\/a>\u00a0per week of fish lower in mercury<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s also generally a good idea to limit foods and beverages that are high in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/natural-sugar-vs-added-sugar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">added sugars<\/a>, saturated fat, and sodium.<\/p>\n<h2>Breastfeeding Tips for Vegans and Vegetarians<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/21114254\/what-to-eat-while-breastfeeding-600-vegans-vegetarians.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-161447\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/21114254\/what-to-eat-while-breastfeeding-600-vegans-vegetarians.png\" alt=\"mom eating fruit while holding baby | What to Eat While Breastfeeding\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen women are vegetarian or vegan, it\u2019s a good idea to meet with a nutritionist or dietitian to make sure they\u2019re on track to meet the dietary needs of their babies,\u201d Borders says, noting the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2072-6643\/11\/3\/557\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">particular importance<\/a>\u00a0for these women of the following nutrients:<\/p>\n<p>Similar concerns apply to breastfeeding women who are interested in maintaining or revisiting their pre-pregnancy eating patterns, oftentimes in the interest of shedding pregnancy weight and getting back into shape fast.<\/p>\n<h2>Breastfeeding and Weight Loss<\/h2>\n<p>Though not every woman reports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/does-breastfeeding-help-you-lose-weight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weight loss while breastfeeding<\/a>, it can certainly help the cause for some.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTypically, prolonging breastfeeding really helps women get back to their pre-pregnancy weight, while also lowering the rates of obesity, diabetes, and cardiac disease,\u201d Borders says.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest reason, in Borders\u2019 opinion?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy breastfeeding for longer, you\u2019re helping to morph those fat reserves in your body into the energy needed to produce breastmilk,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Still, it\u2019s all the more reason to go easy on the extra calories \u2014 unless you really need them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur bodies should\u2019ve already done a good job of putting fat reserves together during pregnancy months,\u201d says Borders, who provides a bottom line that can work for everyone:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always just tell women to 1. Maintain a healthy diet, 2. Eat when you\u2019re hungry, and 3. Don\u2019t go too crazy with additional calories.
