Stamina and endurance are two of these terms, and commonly interchanged and mistaken for each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile they\u2019re related terms that refer to a person\u2019s ability to sustain mental or physical effort over an extended period, there\u2019s a difference between them,\u201d shares personal trainer and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrys.com\/country-select\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.barrys.com\/country-select\/\">Barry\u2019s chief instructor<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrys.com\/instructor\/andrew-nunez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.barrys.com\/instructor\/andrew-nunez\/\">Drew Nunez<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Stamina vs. endurance<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cStamina generally refers to a person\u2019s ability to sustain [intense] physical activity for an extended period of time without experiencing fatigue,\u201d explains Nunez. To get science-y about it, Brooks clarifies that &#8220;endurance can be defined by the body&#8217;s ability to deliver oxygen to muscles while performing an action and stamina is more&#8230;about delivering energy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While stamina and endurance may have different definitions and relate to different types of activities, jointly, they work to improve our overall training and fitness as well as activities in our everyday lives. \u201cTogether, they have a positive impact on physical health, mental well-being, daily productivity, and athletic performance,\u201d shares Nunez.<\/p>\n<h2>Can you have one without the other?<\/h2>\n<p>While this pair typically goes hand-in-hand, there is one exception. &#8220;It is possible to have stamina without endurance,\u201d says the Barry\u2019s chief instructor. \u201cYou might have the energy and strength to perform a particular physical activity, but not be able to sustain it for a long period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you think of running a long distance for example, you may be able to start the run at a fast pace, but soon burn out and not be able to continue. However, the opposite doesn\u2019t exist, he says. To have endurance, you need to have a certain level of stamina.<\/p>\n<h2>How to improve your stamina and endurance<\/h2>\n<p>To train your endurance, focus on activities that require you to sustain a low-intensity effort for 30 minutes or more, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/jogging-vs-running\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/jogging-vs-running\/\">jogging<\/a>, cycling, or swimming, suggests Nunez.
