There is, in fact, a name for the practice, according to people who embrace it on TikTok: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/discover\/bed-rotting\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/discover\/bed-rotting\">bed rotting<\/a>.\u201d Videos tagged with the term have been viewed over 303 million times on the social media platform thus far.<\/div>\n<p>The idea is to really let loose and not do much at all\u2014to decay in your bed, if you will. If the word rotting gives you a bit of pause because it sounds yucky, that\u2019s the point. The name seems to stem from the slang term more than 300,000 people voted as the <a href=\"https:\/\/languages.oup.com\/word-of-the-year\/2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/languages.oup.com\/word-of-the-year\/2022\/\">Oxford Word of the Year for 2022<\/a>\u2014 \u201cgoblin mode,\u201d defined by the online dictionary as &#8220;a type of behavior which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations.&#8221; In actuality, it appears that the definition of bed rotting varies greatly (some proponents talk about doing it all morning in their videos, while others claim to rot in bed for days).<\/p>\n<h2>How bed rotting can disrupt your sleep<\/h2>\n<p>While rotting in bed may <em>seem<\/em> like a great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/cultivating-self-care-practice\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/cultivating-self-care-practice\/\">self-care practice<\/a>, regular bed rotting can mess with your sleep in a couple of ways, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/clicks.trx-hub.com\/xid\/leafgroup_ca5e0_wellgood?q=https%3A%2F%2Fgo.skimresources.com%3Fid%3D104860X1561639%26xs%3D1%26xcust%3DSTMSLS-1074349%26url%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.linkedin.com%252Fin%252Fdrhollidaybell%252F&amp;p=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wellandgood.com%2Fbed-rotting%2F&amp;event_type=click\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/drhollidaybell\/\">Angela Holliday-Bell, MD<\/a>, board-certified physician, sleep medicine specialist, and certified sleep expert for aromatherapy company <a href=\"https:\/\/us.neomorganics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/us.neomorganics.com\/\">NEOM Organics<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s totally fine to spend a day doing something that makes you happy, but it can definitely impact your sleep if it\u2019s on a consistent basis because a huge part of setting ourselves up for good sleep is establishing a consistent connection between your bed and sleep,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>These associations can be weakened, though, if they\u2019re not consistently reinforced. \u201c[The idea] is that as soon as you get in the bed, your brain is trained to know that you\u2019re going to sleep, and when you spend excessive amounts of time in bed watching television, talking on the phone, eating, and doing other activities, it dilutes that relationship,\u201d says Dr. Holliday-Bell. Should you find that the reason is because you&#8217;re feeling anxious or depressed\u2014not just needed a little downtime in a comfy spot, it may be worth exploring other coping mechanisms like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/exercise-as-therapy\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/exercise-as-therapy\/\">exercise or therapy<\/a>, or consider reaching out to a mental health professional for support.<\/p>\n<p>Getting quality shut eye is also a big part of balancing your moods and another reason to mindful of how much time you spend bed rotting. &#8220;If we&#8217;re lying in bed all day, especially consistently, we&#8217;re not engaging in the other activities that are also beneficial for sleep like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/workout-routine-for-better-sleep\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/workout-routine-for-better-sleep\/\">getting movement<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/sleep-tips-circadian-rhythm\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/sleep-tips-circadian-rhythm\/\">getting sunlight<\/a>, and going outside,&#8221; says Dr. Holliday-Bell.
