Essentially, they work in two ways: First by blocking some rays, and second by absorbing the rays and deflecting their damage by turning it into heat.<\/p>\n<p>At the moment, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (both mineral, or physical, sunscreens) are the only two ingredients the Environmental Working Group has deemed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/sunscreen\/report\/executive-summary\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"mbg-track-event\" data-track-event-types=\"click\" data-track-type=\"article-link\" data-track-prop-element-id=\"in-body-link\" data-track-prop-label=\"page_type | element_id\" data-track-prop-category=\"Link\" data-track-prop-link=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/sunscreen\/report\/executive-summary\/\" rel=\"noopener\">safe for use<\/a> and effective at protecting the skin from UV damage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As long as the minerals are non-nano (read: aren&#8217;t broken down into smaller bits), they are deemed safe for oceans, as research shows they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/science\/scientists-are-unraveling-new-dangers-sunscreen-coral-reefs-180969627\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"mbg-track-event\" data-track-event-types=\"click\" data-track-type=\"article-link\" data-track-prop-element-id=\"in-body-link\" data-track-prop-label=\"page_type | element_id\" data-track-prop-category=\"Link\" data-track-prop-link=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/science\/scientists-are-unraveling-new-dangers-sunscreen-coral-reefs-180969627\/\" rel=\"noopener\">don&#8217;t cause coral bleaching<\/a> or affect marine life\u2014another worthy perk.<\/p>\n<p>However, mineral sunscreens have been known to leave a hefty white cast.
