Even if you have zero plans for a post-work evening, it can be tough to fully transition into off mode and leave work brain behind\u2014which is why experts suggest doing a few small things for yourself after closing your laptop or heading home in order to reset, refresh, and recover after work.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you just have a few minutes, knowing what to do after work to physically and mentally transition can help counteract tension and loss of focus triggered by all those hours spent grinding away, sitting through meetings, or staring at screens. &#8220;There&#8217;s this saying that &#8216;companies shouldn&#8217;t have the right to get their employees fresh during the day and send them home tired at night,&#8217; but until the [working] world comes around to that reality, it&#8217;s really up to us to do these mini resets for ourselves,&#8221; says wellness and meditation expert <a href=\"https:\/\/meditatewithsusan.com\/about-susan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/meditatewithsusan.com\/about-susan\/\">Susan Chen<\/a>, founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/meditatewithsusan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/meditatewithsusan.com\/\">Susan Chen Vedic Meditation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Below, find seven expert tips for what to do after work in order to refresh your mind and body for your evening ahead.<\/p>\n<h2>8 simple things you should do to reset after work<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Separate yourself from your workspace<\/h3>\n<p>Whether you\u2019re working from home or in an office, it\u2019s key to create a buffer between your physical work and leisure spaces. \u201cWe really have to be intentional about leaving work where work is,\u201d says Chen. If you work in an office, your commute home can naturally serve as that buffer. But if you work from home, you can also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/work-from-home-guidelines\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/work-from-home-guidelines\/\">create this boundary<\/a> by putting your laptop in a separate room (or drawer) from where you&#8217;ll spend your evening once you&#8217;re through working, says Chen.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe really have to be intentional about leaving work where work is.\u201d \u2014Susan Chen, wellness and meditation expert<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If your work setup isn\u2019t easy to move at the end of the day, cover it with a pretty scarf or blanket to create that visual reminder that you\u2019re off the clock, adds Chen. Do some simple stretches<\/h3>\n<p>Taking the time to do a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/end-of-day-stretch-routine\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/end-of-day-stretch-routine\/\">couple quick stretches<\/a>, if you can, will help work out any stiffness you may feel from being locked in a few of the same positions for most of your day. Trainer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisechakoian.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.denisechakoian.com\/\">Denise Chakoian<\/a>, owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corefitprov.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.corefitprov.com\/\">CORE Cycle. Fitness. Lagree.,<\/a> recommends focusing on your spine and hips, &#8220;which are in flexion all day [if you&#8217;re sitting] and can get very compressed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re able to get down on the floor, Chakoian says a couple quick <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/how-to-do-cat-cow\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/how-to-do-cat-cow\/\">cat-cow yoga poses<\/a> can help re-align the spine, and she especially recommends a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/figure-four-pose\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/figure-four-pose\/\">figure-four stretch<\/a> to open up the hip flexors: Lie flat on your back and cross your right leg over your lift, placing your right ankle on your left quadricep; then, reverse it. If you can&#8217;t get on the floor, she suggests some hip circles to loosen the back and hips instead: While standing, place your hands on your hips, and rotate your hips in circular patterns.<\/p>\n<p>People who work at a computer should be sure to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/neck-and-shoulder-stretches\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/neck-and-shoulder-stretches\/\">stretch the neck and shoulders<\/a>, too, given the tendency to hunch over a screen, adds Chakoian. To start, she recommends rolling both the head and shoulders in circles, alternating directions. Then, stretch the shoulders by &#8220;drawing the shoulder blades in towards each other,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Make time for movement<\/h3>\n<p>In addition to stretching your body, Chakoian strongly advises making time for some movement at the end of the workday, even if it&#8217;s just a few minutes. &#8220;If you can finish your day, put on your headphones, and just walk for even 15 or 20 minutes, you&#8217;re stretching the body and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6723611\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6723611\/\">getting blood flow back to your muscles<\/a>,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<p>All the better if you can take the movement outside, where you may be able to reap the restorative benefits of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/benefits-of-gyms-in-parks\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/benefits-of-gyms-in-parks\/\">green spaces<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/benefits-of-sunlight\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/benefits-of-sunlight\/\">sunlight<\/a>, too. Or, turn on your favorite song and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/cardio-dance-routine\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/cardio-dance-routine\/\">dance it out<\/a> for an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/boost-feel-good-hormones\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/boost-feel-good-hormones\/\">extra hit of feel-good dopamine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Focus your eyes on something that isn&#8217;t a screen<\/h3>\n<p>Staring at a computer all day can contribute to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/symptoms-digital-eye-strain\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/symptoms-digital-eye-strain\/\">digital eye strain<\/a>, which can include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9434525\/#:~:text=Digital%20eye%20strain%20(DES)%20is,blurring%20of%20vision%2C%20and%20headache.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9434525\/#:~:text=Digital%20eye%20strain%20(DES)%20is,blurring%20of%20vision%2C%20and%20headache.\">symptoms like\u00a0dry eyes, irritation, and focus issues<\/a>. Part of the reason why? It&#8217;s a natural impulse to <a href=\"https:\/\/uihc.org\/health-topics\/computer-vision-syndrome\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/uihc.org\/health-topics\/computer-vision-syndrome\">blink less<\/a> while staring at a screen (even if you don&#8217;t realize you&#8217;re doing so).<\/p>\n<p>As a result, it&#8217;s a good idea to ease off the screens post-work and to simply &#8220;switch the focus of your eyes,&#8221; says <a href=\"https:\/\/rwc.smhs.gwu.edu\/resiliency-well-being-center-staff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/rwc.smhs.gwu.edu\/resiliency-well-being-center-staff\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\">Viktoriya Karakcheyeva, MD<\/a>, director of behavioral health at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rwc.smhs.gwu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/rwc.smhs.gwu.edu\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\">Resiliency and Well-Being Center<\/a>\u00a0at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/smhs.gwu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/smhs.gwu.edu\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\">George Washington University\u2019s School of Medicine &amp; Health Sciences<\/a>. By changing what your eyes are focusing on, you&#8217;ll give them a chance to adjust to their new surroundings; Dr. Karakcheyeva suggests simply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aoa.org\/healthy-eyes\/eye-and-vision-conditions\/computer-vision-syndrome?sso=y#:~:text=Resting%20the%20eyes%20for%2015,computer%2C%20try%20to%20blink%20frequently.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.aoa.org\/healthy-eyes\/eye-and-vision-conditions\/computer-vision-syndrome?sso=y#:~:text=Resting%20the%20eyes%20for%2015,computer%2C%20try%20to%20blink%20frequently.\">looking into the distance for 20 seconds<\/a>, for example, &#8220;out the window at something green.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>5. Use water as a \u201cpattern interrupt\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>Incorporating what Chen calls \u201cpattern interrupts,\u201d or quick practices to let your mind know it&#8217;s time to transition between activities, can help you reset after a day of work.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you&#8217;ve been in the zone and in that task-oriented tunnel vision where you&#8217;re singularly focused on work, doing something completely different can help you [shift modes],&#8221; says Chen. She adds that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/calming-effect-water\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/calming-effect-water\/\">water can be especially restorative<\/a>, which is why she often recommends her students make time for a quick shower to reset.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t have the time (or energy) for a shower, &#8220;just splashing your face with cold water can help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6334714\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6334714\/\">stimulate and reset your nervous system<\/a>\u00a0by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/how-stimulate-vagus-nerve\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/how-stimulate-vagus-nerve\/\">activating the vagus nerve,<\/a>&#8221; says Dr. Karakcheyeva, which can bring on a state of calm.<\/p>\n<h3>6. Hydrate with a glass of water or tea<\/h3>\n<p>It&#8217;s easy to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/causes-of-dehydration\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/causes-of-dehydration\/\">get dehydrated<\/a> throughout the day\u2014particularly if you&#8217;re so plugged into your work that you aren&#8217;t regularly rehydrating\u2014so, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/how-to-drink-more-water\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/how-to-drink-more-water\/\">drinking water<\/a> post-work can serve as a helpful reset. According to registered dietitian\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nutritionnowcounseling.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.nutritionnowcounseling.com\/\">Lauren Manaker, MS, RDN<\/a>, &#8220;hydrating can also help you feel more energized,&#8221; which is likely just what you need when you&#8217;re emerging from a long work slog.<\/p>\n<p>To switch things up and boost the health-supportive powers of your post-work beverage, try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/infused-water-recipes\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/infused-water-recipes\/\">infusing your water with fruit or herbs<\/a>. Registered dietitian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christinamanian.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.christinamanian.com\/\">Christina Manian, RDN<\/a>, also likes to unwind with a cup of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/energizing-herbal-teas\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/energizing-herbal-teas\/\">decaffeinated herbal tea<\/a>, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/hibiscus-tea-benefits\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/hibiscus-tea-benefits\/\">antioxidant-rich hibiscus tea<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>7. Nourish yourself with a nutrient-rich snack<\/h3>\n<p>If the gap between when you&#8217;re signing off and when you&#8217;re planning to eat dinner is more than an hour or so, it&#8217;s worth fueling up with a nutritious, healthful snack after work to jumpstart your evening.<\/p>\n<p>Manaker suggests a snack containing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/protein-rich-foods\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/protein-rich-foods\/\">protein<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/why-carbohydrates-important\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/why-carbohydrates-important\/\">complex carbohydrates<\/a>, and\/or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/guide-to-healthy-fats\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/guide-to-healthy-fats\/\">healthy fats<\/a>, which will provide energy and satiety. In that realm, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/cottage-cheese-recipes\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/cottage-cheese-recipes\/\">cottage cheese<\/a> is a good bet, and she also advises reaching for fruits because their combination of fiber and sugar makes them more sustaining than a processed snack item.<\/p>\n<p>One of Manaker&#8217;s favorite fruit-based snacks (that also has a bit of protein) is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/healthy-easy-snacks\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/healthy-easy-snacks\/\">nut-butter stuffed dates<\/a>. To make them, simply slice a date in half and stuff it with your favorite nut butter. &#8220;It&#8217;s energizing and sweet, it has healthy fats, it has fiber, it has carbs, and it has magnesium [which can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/magnesium-for-sleep\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/magnesium-for-sleep\/\">support your sleep that night<\/a>],&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n<h3>8. Do a mindfulness exercise to shake off work stress<\/h3>\n<p>A simple mindfulness exercise can help you mentally shift out of work mode by turning your attention to the present moment. Consider how you feel physically, mentally, and emotionally in order to prioritize yourself and your needs after a long day of doing things for your job.<\/p>\n<p>This brief pause can help you &#8220;shift into that space of recovery and resetting in an easier way,&#8221; adds Giscombe.
