And until around the late 1960s, the people in Roseto still lived as if they were in Italy, especially in terms of their social relationships, religion, and multigenerational homes. In a 2015 PBS documentary series about Italian Americans, filmmakers went to Roseto and spoke with elders who had been around for the original study.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, they were there to document what community members call the Big Time, an annual event that gathers together people with ties to Roseto, almost like a giant family reunion. There are parades, parties, and potlucks with lots of\u2014you guessed it\u2014pasta. Beyond the pure enjoyment of food and wine, what is so clear in the documentary is the real secret to the good life\u2014care and connection.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Roseto resembles the rest of America\u2014it\u2019s no longer a cultural island\u2014and so do its rates of cardiovascular disease. Since the early sixties, when Roseto\u2019s social cohesion started to break down, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semanticscholar.org\/paper\/Lessons-From-Roseto-20-Years-Later%3A-A-Community-of-Bruhn-Philips\/5846237e43ebe70961a75c97872118e00ca5825b\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"mbg-track-event\" data-track-event-types=\"click\" data-track-type=\"article-link\" data-track-prop-element-id=\"in-body-link\" data-track-prop-label=\"page_type | element_id\" data-track-prop-category=\"Link\" data-track-prop-link=\"https:\/\/www.semanticscholar.org\/paper\/Lessons-From-Roseto-20-Years-Later%3A-A-Community-of-Bruhn-Philips\/5846237e43ebe70961a75c97872118e00ca5825b\" rel=\"noopener\">mortality rates from heart disease<\/a> also rose in the younger generation of Rosetans.
