GABA is considered to be an \u201cinhibitory neurotransmitter\u201d because it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK526124\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inhibits nerve transmission<\/a>, which reduces activity in the nervous system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis creates a feeling of calm in the body,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jeanettekimszal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeanette Kimszal<\/a>, RDN, a registered dietitian nutritionist and co-creator of Thyroid Nutrition Educators. So GABA is thought to help reduce feelings of stress.<\/p>\n<p>GABA is a naturally occurring amino acid, but some people have lower levels than others. Lower levels of GABA have been linked to markers of stress.*<\/p>\n<h2>What Foods Contain GABA?<\/h2>\n<p>GABA is found naturally in some foods.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5986471\/figure\/nutrients-10-00591-f003\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dietary sources of GABA<\/a>\u00a0include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Raw spinach<\/li>\n<li>Peas<\/li>\n<li>Tomatoes<\/li>\n<li>Potatoes<\/li>\n<li>Mushrooms<\/li>\n<li>Kale<\/li>\n<li>Broccoli<\/li>\n<li>Oat, wheat, and barley<\/li>\n<li>Buckwheat<\/li>\n<li>Rice<\/li>\n<li>Soybeans<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21395338\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">White tea<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cYou can also get GABA from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1756464614002321?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">foods that contain lactic acid bacteria<\/a>\u00a0(LAB), like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/fermented-foods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, and tempeh<\/a>,\u201d Kimszal says.<\/p>\n<h3>Vitamin B6 and GABA<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/18145104\/what-is-gaba-600-vitamin-b6-food.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-159977\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/18145104\/what-is-gaba-600-vitamin-b6-food.png\" alt=\"vitamin b6 foods | What Is GABA\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition, foods with B6 may help support the synthesis of GABA, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/foodlove.com\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bansari Acharya<\/a>, MS, RDN, a registered dietitian nutritionist and blogger at FoodLove.<\/p>\n<p>GABA is synthesized from glutamate with the help of an enzyme called glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), and vitamin B6 plays an important role in this process.<\/p>\n<p>According to the National Institutes of Health, food\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminB6-HealthProfessional\/#h3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sources of vitamin B6<\/a>\u00a0include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chickpeas<\/li>\n<li>Yellowfin tuna<\/li>\n<li>Salmon<\/li>\n<li>Chicken breast<\/li>\n<li>Potatoes<\/li>\n<li>Bananas<\/li>\n<li>Marinara sauce<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Are GABA Supplements Effective?<\/h2>\n<p>Although some people swear by GABA to help them feel more relaxed and less stressed, the science behind both\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5986471\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dietary GABA<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4594160\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GABA supplements<\/a>\u00a0is still inconclusive.<\/p>\n<p>However, research suggests there may be a few potential benefits.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6031986\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One study<\/a>\u00a0linked GABA with improved sleep quality and shorter sleep latency (the time it takes to fall asleep).*<\/p>\n<p>And in another\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstage.jst.go.jp\/article\/jnsv\/57\/1\/57_1_9\/_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">small study<\/a>, participants who consumed a beverage with 50mg of GABA reported less fatigue and scored higher on a problem-solving task.<\/p>\n<p>But larger-scale studies are needed to fully evaluate and understand potential benefits of GABA supplements. \u201cIt\u2019s not clear whether there are actual benefits from supplementing GABA or consuming foods with this amino acid,\u201d Kimszal says.*<\/p>\n<h2>Are There Any Downsides to GABA Supplements?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/18145056\/what-is-gaba-600-supplement.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-159976\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/18145056\/what-is-gaba-600-supplement.png\" alt=\"gaba tablets | What Is GABA\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Just like potential benefits, the possible side effects that come with taking GABA supplements aren\u2019t completely known yet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere isn\u2019t a lot of research on long-term side effects,\u201d Kimszal says. \u201cThere could also be potential drug interactions with those on medications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Until more is known about potential side effects, proceed with caution.
