Well, sort of. It depends largely on your partner\u2019s dental habits (and your own).<\/div>\n<p>As you may already know, poor oral hygiene can lead to bacteria, which can lead to cavities. The problem comes when that bacteria is spread. \u201cThat bacteria can be passed on to someone else when there is an exchange of saliva, like when you\u2019re passionately kissing your partner,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billdorfmandds.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.billdorfmandds.com\/\">Bill Dorfman, DDS,<\/a> a celebrity cosmetic dentist.<\/p>\n<p>Research backs this up: A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2014\/02\/140220112402.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2014\/02\/140220112402.htm\">study by the University of Louisville<\/a> found that mothers with cavities transmitted oral bacteria to their babies after sharing spoons or trying to clean pacifiers with their mouths.<\/p>\n<p>Those aren\u2019t the only avenues for catching cavities, either. \u201cSharing drinks, utensils, straws, etc. are all ways to exchange bacteria via saliva, which can lead to cavities,\u201d Dr. Dorfman adds. Dr. Dorfman clarifies you\u2019re not looking at an automatic cavity if your partner has one\u2014just an increased chance. \u201cJust because someone has a cavity, or is developing one, doesn\u2019t mean you will get a cavity as well,\u201d he says. \u201cIt continues to be dependent on the state of your oral hygiene.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Safeguard your dental health so you don&#8217;t catch cavities<\/h2>\n<p>So, to protect your teeth and reduce your risk of cavities, Dr. Dorfman encourages <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/oral-health-routine\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/oral-health-routine\/\">maintaining your oral hygiene routine<\/a>\u2014brushing your teeth, flossing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/when-to-use-mouthwash\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/when-to-use-mouthwash\/\">using mouthwash<\/a>, the works\u2014so you\u2019re less likely to have all of that bacteria (from your own mouth or your partner\u2019s) wreaking havoc on your teeth. Plus, some foods like apple and cinnamon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/foods-good-for-teeth\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/foods-good-for-teeth\/\">even have benefits for your gums and teeth<\/a>, so load up on them as part of a healthy diet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnother safeguard is to rinse with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/best-mouthwash-for-gums\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/best-mouthwash-for-gums\/\">alcohol-free mouthwash<\/a> after a kissing session to ward off any bacteria that may have been introduced into your mouth,\u201d Dr. Dorfman adds.<\/p>\n<p>In case you\u2019re wondering, the opposite isn\u2019t true here: You can\u2019t improve your own oral health by kissing someone who brushes\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/best-floss-for-sensitive-gums\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/best-floss-for-sensitive-gums\/\">flosses<\/a>\/uses mouthwash regularly. At the same time, it doesn\u2019t hurt.
