{"id":3897,"date":"2023-05-18T20:25:48","date_gmt":"2023-05-18T13:25:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/loudhdtv.com\/can-blueberries-help-with-diabetes-and-repairing-dna\/"},"modified":"2023-05-18T20:25:48","modified_gmt":"2023-05-18T13:25:48","slug":"can-blueberries-help-with-diabetes-and-repairing-dna","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/loudhdtv.com\/?p=3897","title":{"rendered":"Can Blueberries Help with Diabetes and Repairing DNA?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Blueberries are put to the test against insulin resistance, oxidation, and DNA damage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A famous pair of Harvard studies involved so many people over such long a time that they\u2019ve <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22357723\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">accumulated<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> millions of person-years of data. As I discuss in my video <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/flashback-friday-blueberries-for-a-diabetic-diet-and-dna-repair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Flashback Friday: Blueberries for a Diabetic Diet and DNA Repair<\/strong><\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0<span data-contrast=\"auto\">the studies found the consumption of anthocyanin-rich foods, those containing brightly colored plant pigments and \u201cparticularly blueberries,\u201d was associated with a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Just two or three servings of blueberries a week has been associated with a 23 percent lower risk. In my Daily Dozen, I recommend at least one serving of berries every day\u2014a half-cup of fresh or frozen berries or a quarter-cup of dried.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What do berries have to do with diabetes? Well, type 2 diabetes is caused by insulin resistance, and interventional studies \u201cclearly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20089785\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">showed<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that dietary BBE [berries] ameliorates insulin resistance.\u201d Sounds good, but that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in diabetic mice.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">What happens in people? As you can see in the graph below and at 1:05 in my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/blueberries-for-a-diabetic-diet-and-dna-repair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">video<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, those <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24336456\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">consuming<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> a lot of anthocyanin-rich foods like berries didn\u2019t just have less inflammation,<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">but significantly lower insulin resistance as well. By how much? What we <\/span><\/span><a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW139723557 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24336456\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"TextRun Underlined SCXW139723557 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139723557 BCX0\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">need<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"TextRun SCXW139723557 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139723557 BCX0\"> are interventional trials, where you give people blueberries in a double-blind, randomized, and placebo-controlled clinical trial to truly put them to the test<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139723557 BCX0\">, and we got just that<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW139723557 BCX0\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW139723557 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" BCX0\"> researchers<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW162344579 BCX0\"> used powdered blueberries equivalent <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW162344579 BCX0\">to<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW162344579 BCX0\"> about two cups of fresh blueberries in a smoothie<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW162344579 BCX0\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW162344579 BCX0\">As you can see in the graph below and at 2:09 in my <\/span><\/span><a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW162344579 BCX0\" class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266202416 BCX0\">es<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266202416 BCX0\"> a nosedive two hours afterwards<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266202416 BCX0\">,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266202416 BCX0\"> as your body tries to cope. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2Themed SCXW266202416 BCX0\">But<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2Themed SCXW266202416 BCX0\">,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266202416 BCX0\"> eat it with a <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266202416 BCX0\">half-cup<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266202416 BCX0\"> of blueberries<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266202416 BCX0\">,<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266202416 BCX0\"> and you<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266202416 BCX0\">r antioxidant levels<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266202416 BCX0\"> start out higher and stay higher after the meal. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266202416 BCX0\">T<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266202416 BCX0\">he<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266202416 BCX0\"> researchers<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266202416 BCX0\"> also tried adding <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266202416 BCX0\">just <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266202416 BCX0\">a quarter<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266202416 BCX0\">\u2013<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266202416 BCX0\">cup of blueberries, but that was not enough<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266202416 BCX0\">.<\/span> <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266202416 BCX0\">S<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW266202416 BCX0\">o, we should
