Green tea, black tea, mint tea and chamomile tea highlight a seemingly endless array of healthy teas.<\/p>\n<p>But, not all types of tea are created equal. Certain types are healthier than others. Some are nearly as high in caffeine as your morning coffee, while certain herbal teas could help you rest better, ease nausea, or aid digestion after a big meal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love tea,\u201d says Brocha Soloff, BS, RD, CDN, founder of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ihearthealthrd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">iHeart Health<\/a>. \u201cIt is the best low-calorie winter drink.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s run down the list of the healthiest types of teas. (Note: sugary \u201csweet tea,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/detox-cleanse-uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">detox teas for weight loss<\/a>, and\u00a0fat-burning teas\u00a0did\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0make this list!)<\/p>\n<h2>1. Black Tea<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/17115534\/healthy-tea-600-black-tea.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-159850\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/17115534\/healthy-tea-600-black-tea.jpg\" alt=\" | Healthy Tea\" width=\"598\" height=\"399\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As with green, white, oolong, and puer teas, black tea comes from a plant known as\u00a0<em>Camellia sinensis.\u00a0<\/em>The difference between these types of teas is how they are processed, but they are all from the same plant.<\/p>\n<p>About 84% of all tea consumed in the US each year is black tea, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21294203\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Tea Association of the USA<\/a>. Black tea is made from young leaves and buds that have been completely oxidized, which is what gives the leaves their dark color.<\/p>\n<p>Black tea has the most\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19007524\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">caffeine of all teas<\/a>, with about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/fdc-app.html#\/food-details\/174155\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">47 mg per cup<\/a>. (By comparison,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/fdc-app.html#\/food-details\/171881\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a cup of brewed breakfast blend coffee contains about 92 mg<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBlack tea is good for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3841993\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oral health<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16855537\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heart health<\/a>, and also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/14519827\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contains antioxidants<\/a>,\u201d says Soloff.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Oolong Tea<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/17115529\/healthy-tea-600-oolong-tea.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-159849\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/17115529\/healthy-tea-600-oolong-tea.jpg\" alt=\" | Healthy Tea\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3220617\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oolong teas<\/a>\u00a0are made by partially oxidizing tea leaves, giving this tea strength and color that\u2019s a cross between black tea and green tea.<\/p>\n<p>While not as well-known in the US as black or green tea, oolong tea contains the same beneficial polyphenols and \u2014 like other types of tea \u2014 offers plenty of health benefits for your heart, brain, bones, and teeth, says Soloff.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, studies suggest it may\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/13678386\">boost your metabolism<\/a>, and might protect against developing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/16618952\">type 2 diabetes<\/a>\u00a0as well as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1271\/bbb.58.2197\">certain types of cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day, oolong tea is an incredibly healthy and tasty addition to your lifestyle,\u201d Soloff says.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Green Tea<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/17115524\/healthy-tea-600-green-tea.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-159848\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/17115524\/healthy-tea-600-green-tea.jpg\" alt=\" | Healthy Tea\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Widely known as a\u00a0superfood, green tea is made from tea leaves that are not oxidized after harvest. They are instead steamed, then quickly dried and stored.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/fdc-app.html#\/food-details\/171917\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Green tea<\/a>\u00a0has about 29 mg of caffeine per cup.<\/p>\n<p>While all tea is healthy, \u201cgreen tea is probably the healthiest,\u201d says Soloff.<\/p>\n<p>Green tea gets this excellent reputation because it is high in antioxidant-like compounds, which are believed to have a beneficial effect on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28056735\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brain function<\/a>. The best-known antioxidant-like compound in green tea is EGCG (<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/epdf\/10.1111\/j.1745-4522.1995.tb00028.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">epigallocatechin gallate<\/a>). Green tea\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19680234\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">may also help support weight loss<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Green tea gets this noble, superb, etc., reputation because it is high in antioxidants, which is believed to have a beneficial effect on brain function.<\/p>\n<h2>4. The leaves are carefully, finely ground into the bright green powder you see used in lattes and baked goods.<\/p>\n<p>Not only does it have all the same benefits as regular green tea, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/14518774\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">matcha also contains 137 times more EGCG<\/a>! This high level of EGCG is believed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28784536\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">positively impact mood and cognition<\/a>, too.<\/p>\n<h2>5. White Tea<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/17115451\/healthy-tea-600-white-tea.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-159841\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/17115451\/healthy-tea-600-white-tea.png\" alt=\" | Healthy Tea\" width=\"376\" height=\"430\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Like green tea, white tea comes from leaves that are not oxidized. The difference is that white tea is made from leaves and buds that have not fully opened. They remain covered with thin, white hairs.<\/p>\n<p>White tea has a more delicate taste and slightly less caffeine. It is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28640307\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">considered to be a type of green tea<\/a>, with many of the same benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Like green tea, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0308814607010631\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">white tea is high in antioxidant-like compounds<\/a>\u00a0and is good for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/0801101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weight loss<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21802923\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">insulin resistance<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15324350\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">osteoporosis<\/a>,\u201d says Soloff.<\/p>\n<h2>6. Similar to black teas in terms of their benefits, puer teas are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5736808\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">packed with polyphenols<\/a>\u00a0and considered to be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6117398\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a fermented beverage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>7. Swap your PM glass of chardonnay for a cup of chamomile to promote better sleep.<\/p>\n<h2>8. Sip a mug at bedtime or when feeling particularly anxious.<\/p>\n<h2>12. Reach for a fruit tea, made from dried fruit or fruit extracts. \u201cI love fruit-flavored teas,\u201d says Soloff. \u201cThey give me that taste of having something flavored but without the sugar of fruit drinks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Serve them iced if you\u2019re trying to kick a juice or soda habit, and instead of adding sweetener add a squeeze of lemon or lime.<\/p>\n<h2>Is It OK to Drink Tea Every Day?<\/h2>\n<p>If you don\u2019t add cream or sugar, tea is naturally calorie-free, and Soloff considers its health benefits to be superior to coffee\u2019s. And, sipping on tea could be a good way to stay hydrated, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHerbal teas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/does-coffee-tea-count-as-water\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">count toward your hydration goals<\/a> unless they contain caffeine, which they usually do not,\u201d says Soloff. That\u2019s great news for anyone who gets bored sipping on plain water throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p>If you drink tea for the caffeine, that\u2019s fine, but Soloff says you\u2019ll need to drink even more water to reach your hydration goals.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the diuretic effect of caffeine, she says, drinking a cup of caffeinated tea (like black tea or green tea) would be like drinking half a cup of water.
