For entrepreneur and activist Nitika Chopra, Peloton instructor Logan Aldridge, dancer Jerron\u00a0Herman, and writer Shayna Conde, tough diagnoses have proven to be not just transformative but transcendent. At age 10, she was diagnosed with psoriasis, and at 19, she was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. Both afflictions were all too obvious. \u201cWhen I was covered with psoriasis, all people saw was disease,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> As the founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/chronicon-community-app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/chronicon-community-app\/\">Chronicon<\/a>, a community for folks with chronic illness, she\u2019s now loud and proud about her struggles, but it wasn\u2019t always easy to feel defined by her condition. The ability to separate your personal value from how others view your body is something that usually only comes with age\u2014if at all\u2014but the gift of Chopra\u2019s illness is that it enabled her to adopt this life-changing perspective fairly early on. \u201cIt has been such a teacher for me,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> Still, Chopra acknowledges that the lesson of uncoupling her worth from her physical body is an ongoing process.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> Recently, she\u2019s gained weight from taking steroids prescribed to control a new condition she was diagnosed with last year after a bout with COVID-19, a rare neuromuscular disease that\u2014to add insult to injury\u2014initially presented as drooping in her face, making it difficult for her to smile. And though she\u2019s had years of practice at not letting her appearance define her, she admits that these circumstances have challenged her self-esteem.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> \u201cSelena Gomez is going through something similar due to the medication she\u2019s taking for lupus\u2014people have been commenting [on social media] that she\u2019s gained so much weight,\u201d says Chopra. \u201cAnd she finally got online and said, \u2018You guys, I\u2019ve gained weight because I\u2019m taking medication that\u2019s keeping me alive.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> It\u2019s important to realize, says Chopra, that while you can\u2019t control where other people\u2014like Gomez\u2019s trolls\u2014are on this journey, you can endeavor daily to remember that you are more than your body. And, she says, it\u2019s important to give yourself grace in the process.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> \u201cThis is a moment-to-moment thing\u2014I can feel like a sexy woman in the morning and then a troll in the evening,\u201d she says. \u201cJust because one moment you feel like you have it all figured out, and then the next moment you feel really tender, it doesn&#8217;t mean that you&#8217;re failing. Keep going, and know that it&#8217;s not about getting to one final place.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"next-core\/heading core-heading text-h2 block-thin\" style=\"\"> To let go of productivity for productivity\u2019s sake<\/h2>\n<h4 class=\"next-core\/paragraph core-heading text-h4 block-thin\" style=\"\"> Shayna Conde, writer<\/h4>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shaynaconde.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener sponsored\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.shaynaconde.com\/\">Shayna Conde<\/a> was a healthy 24-year-old when she awoke one day to find that a rare autoimmune condition called neuromyelitis optica (NMO) had \u201ctaken out\u201d the nerves in five of the vertebrae in her spine, effectively paralyzing her from the chest down.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> Conde describes NMO, which is similar to multiple sclerosis, as a \u201cshark in the water\u201d because it lies dormant in your body until something awakens it, at which point it can cause significant damage to your nervous system. While the exact trigger is unknown, Conde\u2019s doctors believe her initial episode was induced by trauma she experienced while studying abroad in grad school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> Now, six years since her initial episode, Conde considers herself lucky to have recovered around 95 percent of her pre-NMO functioning. But her life revolves, at least to some extent, around efforts to prevent a relapse. Each episode increases nervous system damage, meaning that the next one could take her functioning down to, say, 50 percent of the 95 percent she\u2019s regained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> Knowing what it\u2019s like to be paralyzed, and understanding that paralyzation could recur at any moment, has significantly altered Conde\u2019s approach to life. She\u2019s currently working out of Mexico, for example, and plans to continue traveling the world\u2014but not just in service of her career as a travel journalist. \u201cI am on a much longer pursuit of \u2018home\u2019,\u201d she says. \u201cThe way some people talk about the relationship they have with the ground beneath their feet is something that brings me to tears. This has to do, at least in part, with the chokehold capitalism has on the country. It\u2019s at odds, she says, with the approach she\u2019s adopted as a result of her experience with NMO, which has taught her that she can\u2019t take a single second of life for granted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> Conde doesn\u2019t want to waste the gift of what she\u2019s regained, for however long she has it, on productivity for productivity\u2019s sake. \u201cThe idea of \u2018do do do\u2019 is unsustainable for the kind of joy I want to have, the kind of community I want to build, the kind of life I want to sustain,\u201d she says. \u201cI feel like home is a place where you\u2019re not constantly doing things or feeling like you have to be constantly doing things\u2014you can just exist in fullness.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> After all, says Conde, there\u2019s very little that actually <em>has<\/em> to be done. \u201cI learned that from being paralyzed,\u201d she says. At the age of 13, his left arm was amputated after a wakeboarding accident, and he remembers hearing a lot about what he wouldn\u2019t be able to accomplish as a result.\u00a0Fiery from a young age, Aldridge immediately set out to defy those expectations. \u201cA quote from Michael Jordan resonated with me early on,\u201d he says. \u201c\u2018If we accept the way things are, and we accept the expectations of others, then we never change the outcome.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In order to push past the limitations given to him by others, and by his own mind, Aldridge found that it was critical to endure discomfort. \u201cWe don\u2019t discover our potential or grow our abilities when we\u2019re protected,\u201d he says. \u201cI recognized, through the physical experiences I had after losing my arm, that [in discomfort] is where we grow, where we learn something about ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> Aldridge has employed this mentality most obviously in his fitness endeavors\u2014forever pushing himself far beyond what\u2019s comfortable in order to make gains. This began directly after recovery from his accident, when he defied expectations by joining his high school&#8217;s junior varsity football and lacrosse teams, and has continued to this day in both his work as an adaptive trainer and amateur golfer and runner. But, he says, his belief in pushing through discomfort to defy limitations shows up in all aspects of his life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> Sometimes, for example, he\u2019ll hear an inner voice telling him it\u2019s too difficult to cook with one arm. He ignores it, because he knows he <em>can <\/em>cook with just one arm\u2014it may just not be all that comfortable to do so (especially given the fact that he does not actually enjoy cooking).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> The same attitude translates to interpersonal relationships, he says. \u201cWhen things get tough with a loved one, or when I start to see a shift in my perspective of another person, [this mindset] is a reminder not only that I\u2019m more capable than these thoughts and emotions, but so is the other person,\u201d says Aldridge. \u201cWe\u2019re all capable of doing better than we are right now.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"premium-article-quote block-thin flex flex-col relative justify-center text-center mt-[37px] mb-[30px]\" data-type=\"acf\/premium-article-quote\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-wg-quote block-thin flex flex-col\">\n<p class=\"quote-quote text-quote\">&#8220;It\u2019s just a reminder that there\u2019s no ceiling, which in my opinion is a refreshing outlook because things never get easy, we never get to a point where we\u2019ve \u2018made it.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><cite class=\"quote-credit block font-serif text-[19px] italic opacity-60\">\u2014Logan Aldridge<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> He\u2019s careful to distinguish this mentality from one that\u2019s punishing, or that\u2019s about making yourself feel bad about wherever you are. \u201cIt\u2019s just a reminder that there\u2019s no ceiling, which in my opinion is a refreshing outlook because things never get easy, we never get to a point where we\u2019ve \u2018made it,\u2019\u201d he says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> Ultimately, Aldridge credits his disability with teaching him to reframe struggle as a portal to self-discovery and transformation, which helps him not only to face it, but to seek it out. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of like <em>Forrest Gump<\/em>\u2014just keep running,\u201d he says. \u201cEveryone has this feeling of wanting to stop when things get tough, but there is this massively huge untapped potential that we\u2019re far more capable of pursuing than we realize if we can just push past the part of our brains that wants to protect us.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"next-core\/heading core-heading text-h2 block-thin\" style=\"\"> That he can choose how to interpret discomfort<\/h2>\n<h4 class=\"next-acf\/premium-article-image core-heading text-h4 block-thin\" style=\"\"> Jerron Herman, dancer<\/h4>\n<div class=\"block-thin mt-[30px] mb-[40px]\">\n<div class=\"acf-video text-left relative\">\n<figure class=\"w-full h-full m-0\">\n<div class=\"image-2021 overflow-hidden h-0 relative !h-full\" style=\"padding-bottom: 66.666666666667%; The particular type he has is called hemiplegia cerebral palsy, which means only one side of his body is affected. For Herman, this manifests in stiff muscles that spasm frequently.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> Though his condition is categorized as a disability, Herman always had a feeling there was more to these movements than what they\u2019d been reduced to by his doctors. But his ability to tune in to himself was handicapped by the limiting language of the diagnosis he\u2019d received at just three months old. Herman felt his sense of self was distorted by the way his disability was framed to him, and by the way that framing defined him. \u201cThe relationship I had to my body was a bit fractured,\u201d he says. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t my own.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> It wasn\u2019t until he joined a dance company composed of disabled and non-disabled dancers, and found community within it, that he developed a newfound respect for his body\u2014which he now sees as \u201ca translation tool.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"core-paragraph block-thin text-big\" style=\"\"> \u201cI began to look at my body differently, and be like, \u2018What is this spasm saying?\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cA spasm is something that happens very naturally, every day, and possibly all day, for me. But I ascribe meaning to its intensity.
