What are its benefits, and with all the other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/types-of-water\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">types of water<\/a>, is it worth shelling out the extra money?<\/p>\n<p>Read on to find out what you need to know about this trendy drink and the benefits it offers.<\/p>\n<h2>What Is Coconut Water?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cCoconut water is the liquid taken from an immature coconut,\u201d explains\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/fearlessfoodrd\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trinh Le<\/a>, MPH, RDN. (Most of the water in a young coconut\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6255029\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">becomes coconut meat<\/a>\u00a0as the coconut matures.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt contains water, some sugars, and electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and magnesium,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>If you think about cutting off the top of a young coconut, the meat is on the inside of the husk and forms a cup for the coconut water at the center.<\/p>\n<h2>The Benefits of Coconut Water<\/h2>\n<p>Here are six ways you can benefit from drinking coconut water, according to the experts.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Naturally hydrating<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/15132426\/is-coconut-water-good-for-you-600-hydration.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-159645\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/15132426\/is-coconut-water-good-for-you-600-hydration.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cCoconut water can be a great rehydration drink for athletes and heavier exercisers to replace some of the electrolytes and replenish carbohydrate stores that are utilized during exercise,\u201d says\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nourishedwithemily.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emily Tills<\/a>, MS, RDN, CDN.<\/p>\n<p>One small study found that coconut water with added sodium was <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/17883020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">just as effective<\/a>\u00a0at rehydrating people as a sports drink.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Lower in sugar than most sports drink<\/h3>\n<p>This is a simple swap if you\u2019re watching your sugar intake.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/fdc-app.html#\/food-details\/1104559\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Popular sports drinks<\/a>\u00a0have 13 grams of sugar per 8-ounce serving.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/fdc-app.html#\/food-details\/1100594\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Coconut water<\/a>\u00a0has about 9 grams of sugar in the same serving size, but there\u2019s no added sugars.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Easy on the stomach<\/h3>\n<p>If you struggle with occasional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/nauseous-after-workout\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post-workout nausea<\/a>, coconut water might be a good rehydration option to consider. One study found that coconut water caused significantly\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jstage.jst.go.jp\/article\/jpa\/21\/2\/21_2_93\/_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">less nausea, fullness, and stomach upset<\/a>\u00a0after a workout than sports drinks or plain water.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Coconut water is a great way to infuse tropical flavor into smoothies and shakes without adding loads of fat and excess calories.<\/p>\n<p>The downside? Coconut water isn\u2019t rich and creamy like coconut milk.<\/p>\n<h3>5. Good source of potassium<\/h3>\n<p>Coconut water could help you meet your daily potassium needs, which Tills says many of us fail to do. One cup of coconut water delivers about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/fdc-app.html#\/food-details\/170174\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">600 mg potassium<\/a>. It\u2019s not a mineral to be ignored, she says, since it\u2019s \u201cneeded in the body to help with nerve pulses and sending messages from the brain throughout the body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Potassium-HealthProfessional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Even a mild potassium shortage<\/a>\u00a0can cause fatigue and muscle weakness.<\/p>\n<h3>6. Easy calorie-saving swap<\/h3>\n<p>Coconut water \u201ccontains less sugar than typical fruit juice and is likely a good swap if you regularly drink juice but want to cut down on sugars,\u201d says Le.<\/p>\n<p>She adds that although coconut water doesn\u2019t have fat, you can still cause a calorie surplus by drinking too much of it. So while drinking it in place of higher-calorie beverages can be a healthy swap, you should still be mindful of how much you\u2019re consuming.
