The \u201cnewest\u201d arrival to the scene is mushroom tea \u2014 but what exactly is it?<\/p>\n<p>True teas \u2014 including black tea, green tea, oolong tea, and matcha \u2014 come from the\u00a0<em>Camellia sinensis<\/em>\u00a0plant. The term \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6174262\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">herbal tea<\/a>\u201d refers to infusions made with fruit or other herbs that do not contain\u00a0<em>Camellia sinesis, <\/em>including mushrooms.<\/p>\n<p>Mushroom tea is made by steeping mushrooms in hot water to create a savory brew that tastes much different from a cup of coffee or grassy green tea. Mushrooms may be whole or ground, fresh or dried. Common varieties used in mushroom tea include functional fungi like reishi, lion\u2019s mane, or the superfood\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/what-is-chaga-mushroom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chaga<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mushroom tea devotees say this trendy drink can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK92757\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increase energy<\/a>, support\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3924982\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cognitive function<\/a>, and may even have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5584359\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">adaptogenic benefits<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So does mushroom tea live up to the hype? Many of the mushrooms commonly used today are part of traditional Chinese medicine, in which mushrooms were known as an \u201celixir of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other countries, including Japan, Korea, and Russia, have also used mushroom tea for centuries, says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.buffalo-nutrition-and-dietetics.com\/noelle-desantis-ms-rdn-cdn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Noelle Citarella<\/a>, MS, RDN, CDN, a registered and certified dietitian nutritionist with Buffalo Nutrition and Dietetics.<\/p>\n<p>Any edible mushrooms can be used to make tea, but the most common mushrooms found in packaged teas are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chaga<\/li>\n<li>Reishi<\/li>\n<li>Lion\u2019s mane<\/li>\n<li>Cordyceps<\/li>\n<li>Turkey tail<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Mushroom Tea Benefits<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5618583\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">polysaccharides in mushrooms<\/a>\u00a0may support a healthy immune system by helping to activate cells important to the immune system, explains\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionbyrobin.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robin Foroutan<\/a>, MS, RDN, HHC, integrative medicine dietitian, spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and owner of Nutrition by Robin.<\/p>\n<p>However, most of the research in this area is focused on analyzing the components of the mushroom and determining which nutritive values are beneficial for human consumption. More research is needed to confirm if and how mushrooms affect immune function.<\/p>\n<p>Another beneficial mushroom compound is ergothioneine, an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/services\/aop-cambridge-core\/content\/view\/8DF489EB1B7354B84B0058B8CF11A3DF\/S0954422419000301a.pdf\/div-class-title-the-biology-of-ergothioneine-an-antioxidant-nutraceutical-div.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">amino acid with antioxidant properties<\/a>, Foroutan says.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the mushrooms used in mushroom tea are also considered\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/what-are-adaptogens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">adaptogens<\/a>. \u201cAdaptogens are any type of bioactive compound that can protect against oxidative stress and reduce the stress response, so you may feel less exhausted from dealing with stress,\u201d Citarella says.<\/p>\n<h2>Which Type of Mushroom Tea is Best?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/12131557\/mushroom-tea-600-types.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-159485\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/12131557\/mushroom-tea-600-types.png\" alt=\"5 different types of mushrooms for tea | mushroom tea\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Certain types of fungi used in mushroom tea may offer specific benefits. \u201cThe scientific evidence isn\u2019t that strong yet, but it\u2019s promising,\u201d Citarella says.<\/p>\n<p>To back up these claims, we\u2019ll need more randomized trials using humans rather than animals or cells, but these are some of the potential benefits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chaga mushrooms<\/strong>\u00a0have been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine and Russian herbalism to potentially help the body adapt to the effects of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1422-0067\/18\/9\/1934\/htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oxidative stress<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reishi mushrooms<\/strong>\u00a0may\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK92757\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">support healthy immune function<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lion\u2019s mane<\/strong>\u00a0was the subject of a rodent study for its potential benefits for brain health.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cordyceps<\/strong>\u00a0may help\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5236007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">improve exercise performance<\/a>, though research is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3110835\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">still limited<\/a>, as both studies cited contained a small number of participants.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Turkey tail<\/strong>\u00a0is believed to help support<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK424937\/#_CDR0000778943__3_\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0the immune system<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 but, again, further research is needed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Mushroom Tea Precautions<\/h2>\n<p>Be mindful that certain types of mushrooms may have side effects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have any health conditions, check with your doctor or dietitian to make sure they are right for you,\u201d Foroutan says.
