{"id":3600,"date":"2023-05-11T17:21:33","date_gmt":"2023-05-11T10:21:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/loudhdtv.com\/lipstick-contaminated-with-lead\/"},"modified":"2023-05-11T17:21:33","modified_gmt":"2023-05-11T10:21:33","slug":"lipstick-contaminated-with-lead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/loudhdtv.com\/?p=3600","title":{"rendered":"Lipstick Contaminated with Lead?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Dozens of lipsticks and lip glosses are put to the test.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver the past years, using cosmetic products has <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25787160\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increased <\/a>worldwide at an alarming rate due to unending pursuit for individual beautification\u2026\u201d There\u2019s nothing necessarily wrong with that unless cosmetic products <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26296330\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contain<\/a> ingredients that may be linked to disease\u2014ingredients such as toxic heavy metals like lead.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see at 0:28 in my video <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/flashback-friday-is-lipstick-safe-given-the-lead-contamination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Flashback Friday: Is Lipstick Safe Given the Lead Contamination?<\/strong><\/a>, lead has been <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24530804\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> in a wide range of cosmetic products, from eye shadow to skin cream, and foundation to blush. You may recall that I talked about lead in henna in my video <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/is-henna-safe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Is Henna Safe?<\/strong><\/a>, but in looking at the data, \u201cimportant warnings can be <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24530804\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recognized<\/a>\u201d: the presence of lead in lipsticks. This is concerning because lipstick wearers may actually swallow a little bit of it. In fact, it has \u201cbeen estimated that a woman inadvertently <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23598019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ingests<\/a> 1.8 kg [about 4 lbs] of lipstick during her lifetime.\u201d \u201cMoreover, lipsticks can be <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24530804\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">used<\/a> by pregnant women or women of child bearing age.\u201d (I mean, <em>obviously<\/em>.) Yes, lead is highly toxic, but how much lead can there be in lipstick? Surely, it <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25787160\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is<\/a> \u201ca very minor source\u2026.Nonetheless, one should not exclude the fact that lead accumulates in the body due to over time and repetitive lead-containing lipstick or hair dye application, which lead to significant exposure levels.\u201d You don\u2019t really know, though, until you put it to the test.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-91608\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/0-28.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1050\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/0-28.png 1920w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/0-28-960x525.png 960w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/0-28-1024x560.png 1024w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/0-28-768x420.png 768w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/0-28-1536x840.png 1536w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/0-28-1200x656.png 1200w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/0-28-720x394.png 720w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/0-28-540x295.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Thirty-two lipsticks and lip glosses were <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23674482\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tested<\/a>, and lead was detected in 75 percent of the products, which \u201csuggests potential public health concerns.\u201d But how much lead did the researchers actually find? About half of the samples exceeded the FDA-recommended maximum level set for candy.<\/p>\n<p>That limit is set for something kids may eat every day, though. Kids are not going to eat tubes of lipstick each day. \u201cNevertheless, it is generally accepted that there is no safe level of Pb <\/p>\n<p> intake,\u201d and, ideally, we should get contaminant levels down to zero. As a consumer group pointed out, a quarter of the lipsticks were lead-free, so we know it <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23732812\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can<\/a> be done. Maybe we should better <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/23732812\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">regulate<\/a> toxic metals in cosmetics to protect women\u2019s health in the United States, as has already been done in Europe. Fair enough, but it wasn\u2019t well-received.<\/p>\n<p>The billion-dollar lipstick industry wasn\u2019t happy. In an article that tried to downplay the risks, the scientists-for-hire firm that once played villain in the real-life Erin Brockovich case <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25839902\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">concluded<\/a> that, even though lipstick may contain lead, the concentrations are so low that they \u201care not expected to pose any health risks to adults or children.\u201d Children\u2019s blood lead levels are influenced more by background lead exposures, such as lead in the air, dust, water, and food, than by lipstick exposures, but just because our environment is so contaminated doesn\u2019t mean we need to add to the problem. In fact, because there\u2019s so much lead around anyway, maybe there\u2019s that much more reason to cut down on additional exposures. But in that article, the scientists-for-hire calculated that an adult would need to apply lipstick more than 30 times a day to raise their blood lead level to even the most stringent limits and 695 times a day to get blood levels up to more concerning levels.<\/p>\n<p>However, as you can see at 3:13 in my <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/is-lipstick-safe-given-the-lead-contamination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>video<\/strong><\/a>, this was <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25839902\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">based<\/a> on an assumption that lipstick would only have about one part per million lead or, at the extreme end, maybe two or three parts per million (ppm). But by 2016, about ten times more lipsticks were <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27187630\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tested<\/a>, and they averaged nearly 500 ppm\u2014with 10 percent exceeding 1,000 ppm\u2014going all the way up to 10,000 ppm, with more than one out of five exceeding FDA and even Chinese safety limits on lead in cosmetics.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-91610\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/3-13.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1050\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/3-13.png 1920w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/3-13-960x525.png 960w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/3-13-1024x560.png 1024w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/3-13-768x420.png 768w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/3-13-1536x840.png 1536w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/3-13-1200x656.png 1200w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/3-13-720x394.png 720w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/3-13-540x295.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>As you can see i<span class=\"notion-enable-hover\" data-token-index=\"0\" data-reactroot=\"\">n the graphs below and <\/span>at 3:42 in my <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/is-lipstick-safe-given-the-lead-contamination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>video<\/strong><\/a>, lip gloss <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27187630\/\">was<\/a> worse than lipstick; orange and pink colors had more lead than brown, red, or purple; and all of the really contaminated cosmetics were the cheaper ones, sold for less than five dollars each.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-91612\" src=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/3-42.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1050\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/3-42.png 1920w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/3-42-960x525.png 960w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/3-42-1024x560.png 1024w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/3-42-768x420.png 768w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/3-42-1536x840.png 1536w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/3-42-1200x656.png 1200w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/3-42-720x394.png 720w, https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/03\/3-42-540x295.png 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Hold on. The highest concentration found was 10,185 mg\/kg. That\u2019s 10 grams per kilogram, which means the lipstick was 1 percent pure lead. That means a single application could <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/8359314\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expose<\/a> a grown woman to perhaps 12 times the tolerable daily intake.<\/p>\n<p>And if a woman is interested in <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27187630\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">having<\/a> children, that poses a \u201cparticular concern,\u201d as lead accumulates in our bones and \u201cmay be released into the bloodstream during pregnancy,\u201d where it can slip through the placenta or into breast milk.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that the FDA is considering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/regulatory-information\/search-fda-guidance-documents\/draft-guidance-industry-lead-cosmetic-lip-products-and-externally-applied-cosmetics-recommended\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lowering<\/a> the maximum allowable lead levels in lipstick from 20 ppm to 10 ppm, something Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24852494\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrived<\/a> at a decade ago. But without enforcement, it doesn\u2019t matter. As you can see i<span class=\"notion-enable-hover\" data-token-index=\"0\" data-reactroot=\"\">n the graph below and <\/span>at 4:39 in my <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionfacts.org\/video\/is-lipstick-safe-given-the-lead-contamination\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>video<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27187630\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">moving<\/a> the legal limit from 20 ppm down to 10 ppm would just mean that instead of 23 percent of lip products exceeding legal levels, 27 percent would be exceeding legal levels.
