So, read on to learn what potassium is, why your body needs it, and how to ensure you\u2019re getting enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>What Is Potassium?<\/h2>\n<p>Potassium is a key mineral for our bodies. \u201cIt\u2019s found inside cells, and is vital in regulating fluid and electrolyte balance in the body,\u201d says Jennifer Glockner, R.D.N. and creator of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smarteeplate.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Smartee Plate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Because potassium is an electrolyte, she explains, it helps conduct electrical charges in the body, which in turn helps contraction of the heart and muscles.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>How Much Potassium Do I Need Per Day?<\/h2>\n<p>According to the 2021\u20132025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietaryguidelines.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2021-03\/Dietary_Guidelines_for_Americans-2020-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recommended daily intake of potassium<\/a> for the average healthy adult is 2,600 mg for women and 3,400 mg for men.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of us don\u2019t consume enough fresh fruits and veggies,\u201d says Glockner, \u201cand therefore, we don\u2019t consume enough potassium in our diet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it\u2019s unlikely (and probably inadvisable) that you\u2019ll get 3,400 milligrams of potassium from just one food source. But you can get enough potassium by taking a varied approach to your diet, and prioritizing foods high in potassium, like fruits, vegetables, and legumes.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Can You Overdose on Potassium?<\/h2>\n<p>Most people have a hard enough time eating the recommended amount per day, so it\u2019s difficult to get too much potassium.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, those with impaired kidney function should consult their healthcare provider and most likely will be instructed to limit potassium intake,\u201d says Beachbody Senior Nutrition Manager Krista Maguire, R.D., C.S.S.D.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because the kidney is responsible for flushing out excess potassium in your urine. If you have kidney disease, though, \u201cthe kidney can\u2019t remove the excess potassium, which then accumulates in the blood, and may cause harm,\u201d says Glockner. This can result in a condition called hyperkalemia, which Glockner says may contribute to heart problems.<\/p>\n<p>If you have a history of kidney disease or heart issues, talk to your doctor to ensure you\u2019re getting the right amount of potassium.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>What Are the Benefits of Potassium?<\/h2>\n<p>Eating foods high in potassium is important for regular cell function, Maguire says. \u201cPotassium is also important for heart health in that it can help maintain normal blood pressure,\u201d she explains. \u201cEspecially when sodium intake is high.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why upping your potassium intake while simultaneously reducing your sodium intake may help <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/24924995\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">maintain healthy blood pressure<\/a>, Glockner says, potentially leading to better overall\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/nih-research-matters\/how-too-little-potassium-may-contribute-cardiovascular-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">heart health<\/a>. Increased potassium consumption has also been linked to better\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28093633\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bone mineral density<\/a>, she adds.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>20 Best Sources of Potassium<\/h2>\n<p>Bananas aren\u2019t the only \u2014 or even best \u2014 source of potassium.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are foods that provide even more,\u201d Maguire says, like certain dried fruits and legumes.<\/p>\n<p>Try to get your daily potassium from a variety of foods so you can score other nutrients at the same time.
