More of them than you might think, too.<\/div>\n<p>Recently, registered dietitian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@michellepillepich\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@michellepillepich\">@michellepillepich on TikTok<\/a> made a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@michellepillepich\/video\/7175485614798785838\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@michellepillepich\/video\/7175485614798785838\">video<\/a> about how your brain alone needs the equivalent of seven slices of bread a day. (Hint: more than diet culture would ever lead you to believe.)<\/p>\n<h2>How to know if you\u2019re getting enough carbs<\/h2>\n<p>First, it\u2019s important to note that for some (or maybe even most) of us, counting the amount of carbs we eat every day can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/eating-disorder-resources\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/eating-disorder-resources\/\">trigger disordered thoughts about food<\/a> at best and restriction at worst. If you suspect that could be the case for you, consider working with an anti-diet dietitian to ensure you get the amount of carbs suggested without having to count them. She explains doing so ensures your blood sugar will stay stable and give you enough energy for the day.<\/p>\n<p>Another option is to count how many servings of carbs are on your plate. \u201cAs a general rule, I try to aim for at least three to four servings of carbohydrates per meal, and from a variety of sources,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theprojectheal.org\/whitney-trotter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.theprojectheal.org\/whitney-trotter\">Whitney Trotter<\/a>, RD, a registered dietitian at Project Heal. \u201cThis can come from grains, fruit, vegetables, dairy, fun foods, and so on.\u201d (FYI, some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/healthy-carbohydrate-foods\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/healthy-carbohydrate-foods\/\">gut-friendly carbs<\/a> are oatmeal, potatoes, pulses, bananas, and yogurt.)<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAs a general rule, I try to aim for at least three to four servings of carbohydrates per meal, and from a variety of sources. Previte lists:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Being unable to stop thinking about food<\/li>\n<li>Noticing thoughts in your head like \u201cI shouldn\u2019t eat that\u201d or \u201cI\u2019m \u2018bad\u2019 if I eat that\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Constantly eating to a point of physical discomfort when you finally allow yourself to eat carbs<\/li>\n<li>Avoiding carbs all day to \u201cbe good,\u201d then feeling out of control around carbs and food at the end of the day<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Being mindful of and respecting those signs is important for all of us. And not just once, but throughout the day, every day. The number of carbs that satisfy your brain and body one day may not be enough the next. Plus, all bodies are different and healthy eating isn\u2019t just about giving your body what it \u201cneeds,\u201d but about what it wants, too.<\/p>\n<h2>What do carbs do, anyway?<\/h2>\n<p>As registered dietitian Claire Chewning, RD, half-jokes, carbs are a major source of joy in eating and a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/clairechewning\/status\/1640479617902411777\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/clairechewning\/status\/1640479617902411777\">source of vitamins and minerals<\/a>. Besides that, and as we\u2019ve mentioned, carbs are also crucial in sustaining your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/brain-energy-carbohydrates\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/brain-energy-carbohydrates\/\">mental and physical energy<\/a>. \u201cThe brain and body are constantly using energy throughout the day, from simple tasks such as getting dressed and typing on a computer to providing energy for our organs and system to function,\u201d Trotter says. \u201cThere are so many systems in our body that require energy to maintain basic homeostasis\u2014endocrine, digestive, respiratory, and so many others\u2014that people don\u2019t realize.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe brain and body are constantly using energy throughout the day, from simple tasks such as getting dressed and typing on a computer to providing energy for our organs and system to function,\u201d Trotter says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Further, that only accounts for what your body <em>needs<\/em>. What it <em>wants <\/em>is valid, too! While diet culture makes us believe we need to \u201cjustify\u201d or \u201caccount for\u201d our carbs, Trotter assures us this isn\u2019t the truth.<\/p>\n<p>Once carbs enter your body, they break down into glucose (sugar) that serves as energy. \u201cThink about getting in a car with a gas tank on \u2018E\u2019\u2014you wouldn\u2019t be able to drive and the car would not be able to function properly,\u201d Previte says. \u201cWhen our body has adequate fuel (aka carbs), our organs are able to function and we are able to enjoy our lives because our bodies are properly nourished.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>The risks you run by not getting enough carbs<\/h2>\n<p>Not only do you want to avoid running your body on <em>no<\/em> carbs, but avoid consuming too few, too. Previte says if you don\u2019t get enough carbs, you\u2019ll experience irritability, difficulty focusing, feeling cold, obsessing over calories\/portions\/food\/macros, and more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny time a patient complains of dizziness, low energy, fatigue, and difficulty with concentration and focus, I immediately ask them about their intake and if they are getting enough in sources of carbs,\u201d Trotter adds.
