To each their own, I say, but at the speed at which I sip my caffeine\u2014and my lack of restraint to savor it\u2014I\u2019ve taken to making homemade iced coffee to help myself save money and time this summer.<\/p>\n<p>You would think something so straightforward to make would require no instruction, but if you\u2019ve ever tried making homemade iced coffee, you know that there\u2019s a very strong (pun intended) chance that it can end up tasting like coffee-flavored water. Using the proper technique is a key way to avoid this. And while a viable option, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/cold-brew-vs-iced-coffee\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/cold-brew-vs-iced-coffee\/\">iced coffee and cold brew<\/a> aren\u2019t one and the same. \u201cIced coffee is brewed hot and then chilled down. Cold brew is, like the name suggests, coffee that is brewed with cold or room-temperature water,\u201d Han says. And don&#8217;t forget to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/how-to-make-coffee-ice\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/how-to-make-coffee-ice\/\">chill a batch of coffee ice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>How to make homemade iced coffee using two methods<\/h2>\n<h3>Method 1: Flash brew<\/h3>\n<p>The first method involves a \u201cflash brew,\u201d a popular technique long used in Japan, which results in what the Japanese refer to as <em>Aisu Kohi<\/em> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/japanese-iced-coffee-flash-chilled\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.wellandgood.com\/japanese-iced-coffee-flash-chilled\/\">flash-chilled coffee<\/a>. This entails \u201cbrewing hot coffee directly over ice,\u201d says Han, and it is both her and Wong\u2019s preferred method. \u201cThis creates a flavorful and bright iced coffee without the murky flavor you sometimes get from cooling a cup of hot coffee in the refrigerator,\u201d says Wong. It typically requires a pour-over brewer\u2014a tradeoff for those who don\u2019t own this type of coffee maker at home.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThis creates a flavorful and bright iced coffee without the murky flavor you sometimes get from cooling a cup of hot coffee in the refrigerator,\u201d says Wong.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I was new to this method before my test, so I followed a flash brew recipe from <a href=\"https:\/\/bakedbrewedbeautiful.com\/recipes\/best-basic-iced-coffee-recipe-flash-chilling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/bakedbrewedbeautiful.com\/recipes\/best-basic-iced-coffee-recipe-flash-chilling\/\">Baked Brewed Beautiful<\/a> using the <a href=\"https:\/\/clicks.trx-hub.com\/xid\/leafgroup_ca5e0_wellgood?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FHario-Ceramic-Coffee-Dripper-White%2Fdp%2FB000P4D5HG%3Fth%3D1%26tag%3Dwgtrx10013-20%26asc_refurl%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.wellandgood.com%252Fhomemade-iced-coffee-methods%252F%26asc_source%3Ddirect%26asc_campaign%3Dno-campaign&amp;p=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wellandgood.com%2Fhomemade-iced-coffee-methods%2F&amp;event_type=click\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Hario-Ceramic-Coffee-Dripper-White\/dp\/B000P4D5HG?th=1\">Hario V60 Ceramic Coffee Dripper Pour Over<\/a> ($26). Sure enough, Han and Wong were spot-on: Flash brewing iced coffee produces a cup of coffee that is super smooth-tasting and naturally sweet, without any overly bitter aftertaste.<\/p>\n<p>Flash brewing requires a long, constant spiral pour, which will either feel meditative or like extra work depending on your pre-caffeine state. For me, it was the former\u2014and while not everyone will share this sentiment, the effort is well worth it. If you want to try this at home, my only recommendation is that you use large ice cubes while the coffee drips into your cup so they don\u2019t melt as quickly.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ingredients:<br \/><\/em>30 ounces ground coffee (medium-fine grind)<br \/>230 ounces water<br \/>150 grams ice cubes<br \/>2 Tbsp milk (optional)<\/p>\n<p><em>Materials:<\/em><br \/>Pour-over brewer<br \/>Coffee filter<br \/>Gooseneck kettle<\/p>\n<p>1. Heat water in a kettle to a temperature of about 195\u00b0F to 205\u00b0F.<\/p>\n<p>2. Place a coffee filter and moisten the filter with hot water.<\/p>\n<p>3. Add ice cubes to a glass or cup, or, if using a Chemex, the carafe.<\/p>\n<p>4. Add coffee grounds to the coffee filter bag.<\/p>\n<p>5. Slowly pour water over the grounds in a circular motion to evenly saturate. Wait 30 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>6. Repeat previous step with the remaining water until no more water runs from the kettle. Swirl to combine.<\/p>\n<p>7. It\u2019s pretty simple, too: Just brew your coffee as you normally would, let it cool, and then serve it with ice. Han says that you can also chill your coffee in the fridge if you\u2019re in a time crunch.<\/p>\n<p>The downside to this coffee-cooling method, as mentioned by Wong, is that it can result in a less-than-tasty cup. Han agrees: \u201cThe coffee can end up tasting stale and oxidized since it\u2019ll need to sit for at least a few hours.\u201d Since you\u2019ll have to wait for the coffee to cool down, it\u2019ll also require more time to prepare ahead.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe coffee can end up tasting stale and oxidized since it\u2019ll need to sit for at least a few hours,\u201d says Han.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Because you can use your preferred coffee machine or maker for this method, I went straight to my trusty <a href=\"https:\/\/clicks.trx-hub.com\/xid\/leafgroup_ca5e0_wellgood?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FBodum-Caffettiera-Plastic-Stainless-34-Ounce%2Fdp%2FB00008WU99%3Fth%3D1%26tag%3Dwgtrx10013-20%26asc_refurl%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.wellandgood.com%252Fhomemade-iced-coffee-methods%252F%26asc_source%3Ddirect%26asc_campaign%3Dno-campaign&amp;p=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wellandgood.com%2Fhomemade-iced-coffee-methods%2F&amp;event_type=click\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-vars-event=\"body text\" data-vars-click-url=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Bodum-Caffettiera-Plastic-Stainless-34-Ounce\/dp\/B00008WU99?th=1\">Bodum Caffettiera French Press ($28)<\/a> and let the coffee grounds steep for four minutes in hot water (and not a second longer) before pouring my brew into a separate cup. To speed up the cooling process, I placed the cup in the fridge. It took about 20 minutes for it to cool to room temperature and I served it with a generous amount of ice.<\/p>\n<p>While my coffee had that slightly \u201cmuddy\u201d appearance that French press coffee is known for, it didn\u2019t taste that way. It was pleasant with a punchy flavor. But in my opinion, it was less smooth and more bitter than the previous method. (Suppose this was to be expected.)<\/p>\n<p>Generally, I think the flash brewing method of making iced coffee products a more balanced, less bitter cup\u2014but that&#8217;s just my palate. If you&#8217;ve got the gear to execute it, even better. But you can&#8217;t beat the versatility of the coffee-cooling method. It&#8217;s really a matter of your priorities when it comes to caffeinating.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ingredients:<br \/><\/em>Coffee grounds<br \/>Water<br \/>Ice cubes<\/p>\n<p>1. Make hot coffee using your preferred method.<\/p>\n<p>2. Pour coffee into mugs or a carafe, and let it cool to room temperature or refrigerate.<\/p>\n<p>3. Once cooled, serve over ice.<\/p>\n<h2>How to upgrade your homemade iced coffee<\/h2>\n<p>An iced coffee is refreshing in itself, and while you can certainly enjoy it as is, it can also serve as a blank canvas for experimentation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny way that you can typically jazz up a hot coffee will certainly also work with iced coffee,\u201d says Han. This means a splash of milk or cream, or a hint of vanilla. According to Wong: \u201cAnother great way to flavor iced coffee is steeping the coffee along with other ingredients like mulling spices or cinnamon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The iced-coffee varieties you can make are endless. \u201cSince iced coffee is cold, you do also have the possibility of experimenting with fresh garnishes like herbs or citrus that can add an interesting dimension,\u201d says Han. \u201cFlash-brewed coffees in particular tend to have brighter, more fruit-forward flavors\u2014expressing a lemon peel onto an iced coffee like you would for a cocktail can be quite tasty!\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>3 homemade iced coffee recipes to try<\/h2>\n<h3>1.
