The snarky side of me wanted to say something like, \u201cOh my god, yes, I <em>totally<\/em> see it. Did (s)he also mention how your left ear is lower than the right? That\u2019s messed up. We need to fix that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But I didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Nope, all I did was sit there, nod my head, listen intently, and kept repeating to myself \u201cdon\u2019t stab yourself with this pen, don\u2019t stab yourself with this pen, no, Tony, NO!\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>People Think They\u2019re Broken<\/h3>\n<p>It never ceases to amaze me how some people will harp on the most inane things when it comes to their body and performance and then regale me with stories of how their previous coach or trainer was a \u201ccorrective exercise specialist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I won\u2019t invalidate their stories or experiences, of course, but it\u2019s hard for me to listen to sometimes.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll outline their \u201ctraining\u201d for the past few months (if not years), and it\u2019s rife with positional breathing drills (which, for the record, I\u2019m a fan of), postural stretches, and describe a foam rolling series that rivals the length of a Ken Burns\u2019 documentary.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll follow with \u201cSo, did you actually ever follow a strength training program consistently?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, sure, we did a bunch of corrective exercises and, after 19 weeks, we finally worked up to a bodyweight squat. I still have to work on my big toe dorsiflexion, though. Fingers crossed I can improve that by December.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Me\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/sgJI8d0uJW9gY\" width=\"480\" height=\"361\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/personal-school-family-guy-sgJI8d0uJW9gY\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As an industry \u2013 and I\u2019ll call myself out on this too (particularly early in my career) \u2013 we\u2019ve done a splendid job at helping people feel like a bunch of walking balls of fail:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your shoulders and upper back are too rounded.<\/li>\n<li>Yikes, your pelvis is anteriorly tilted.<\/li>\n<li>Oh\u2026my\u2026god\u2026we need to work on your scapular upward rotation.<\/li>\n<li>Shit, your FABER screen tested positive. How are you able to walk?<\/li>\n<li>Also, FYI: you have Chlamydia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t surprise me in the least why so many people walk around thinking they\u2019re fragile snowflakes who need to correct or \u201cfix\u201d everything before they do any appreciable training.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s our fault.<\/p>\n<p>Strength coaches, personal trainers, physical therapists, athletic trainers, sherpas, we\u2019re all culpable.<\/p>\n<p>We <em>can<\/em> and <em>need<\/em> to do better.<\/p>\n<p>And it starts with re-acquainting ourselves with what our main role as fitness professionals actually is\u2026<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u2026to elicit a training effect with our clients\/athletes.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Again\u2026Getting Strong(er) is Corrective<\/h3>\n<p>I say this with a grain of salt because \u201cstrong\u201d is subjective, and can mean different things to different people.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Being able to deadlift 2x bodyweight is strong.<\/li>\n<li>Being able to perform 15 pull-ups is strong.<\/li>\n<li>Walking from Trader Joe\u2019s to your apartment without putting down the bags is strong.<\/li>\n<li>The ability to pull off wearing white after Labor Day is strong.<\/li>\n<li>Doing whatever it is Cirque du Soleil performers can do is strong.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, since I\u2019m a little biased \u201cgetting stronger\u201d in this sense \u2013 and more cogent to the conversation \u2013 refers to TRAINING.<\/p>\n<p>I.e., lifting heavy things.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, many people have been led to believe lifting weights is dangerous. Dangerous? Noooo. I mean, I\u2019ll slit your fucking throat in your sleep if you don\u2019t pay me any attention, but all in all\u2026.cuddles.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And just to set the record straight, and to push back with all my will to those people (worst of all, doctors, PT\u2019s, etc) who keep spreading the message that strength training is dangerous (particularly when addressing a current injury)\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026I give you the LAWS of Loading:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wolff\u2019s Law<\/strong> \u2013 Bones will adapt to loads under which it is placed<\/p>\n<p><strong>Davis\u2019s Law<\/strong> \u2013 Soft tissue will heal according to the manner which they are mechanically stressed.<\/p>\n<p>For the \u201cyou only have one back\u201d guy\u2026is this then not why we train? Squats and deadlifts, when properly loaded and progressed, will do far more good for someone\u2019s recovery from injury than most alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>I hate the \u201ceverything makes you dysfunctional or causes dysfunction\u201d crowd.<\/p>\n<p>To which I say\u2026<strong><em>the fuck outta here<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>My friend Bret Contreras has the perfect antithesis to this faulty mindset:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cIf you think lifting weights is dangerous, try being weak. Being weak is dangerous.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And this is why I\u2019m a firm ambassador in encouraging people to get strong(er), or more to the point, helping them figure out their \u201ctrainable menu.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rather than pointing out everything that\u2019s wrong with someone, I\u2019d rather use the initial assessment (and subsequent training sessions) to highlight what they <strong><em>can<\/em><\/strong> do.<\/p>\n<p>Lets use the classic example of someone who has \u201ccomputer guy\u201d posture. I.e., rounded shoulders, forward head posture, an affinity for pens.<\/p>\n<p>When someone walks in exhibiting this posture a lot of trainers will write down a laundry list of stretches, thoracic (mid-back) mobility drills, and other \u201ccorrective\u201d exercises to do.<\/p>\n<p>Well, first, some will go out of their way to make the person feel like Cersei Lannister during her walk of shame.<\/p>\n<p><em>Shame, shame, shame\u2026.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/MWlscHXmIraik\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/walk-of-shame-MWlscHXmIraik\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And then, you know\u2026<strong><em>lets get corrective, son!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re not wrong to do so.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not opposed to utilizing corrective modalities to address postural deficits or mobility restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>But I find when these sort of things are accentuated and serve as the \u201cmeat-n-potatoes\u201d of a training program, it often sets people up for failure; they become more fixated on perfection at the expense of progress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And lets be honest:<\/strong> NO ONE gets jazzed-up at the gym to do more T-spine extension drills.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"TonyGentilcore.com How to Perform Thoracic Extension on Foam Roller Correctly\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Oi9MeEGiQ-0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t want my clients to feel like a perpetual patient.<\/p>\n<p>I want them to train, because training tends to be more palatable than Scapular Wall Slides. It helps people stay on task and not bored to tears.<\/p>\n<p>And on that note, wanna know an excellent drill that helps nudge people into a bit more thoracic extension?<\/p>\n<p><del>Kipping pull-ups.<\/del><\/p>\n<p>FRONT SQUATS.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"TonyGentilcore.com - 2 Simple Cues to Clean Up Your Front Squat\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jHmZIhuZgxc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As you descend closer to the ground you have to \u201cfight\u201d to keep from folding over. In many ways the proper execution of the exercise itself is self-coaching; or dare I say, corrective.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t maintain thoracic extension the barbell rolls off your shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>I may come across as the cantankerous strength coach in saying this, but I find more value in having my clients <em><strong>train<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 in a way that emphatically demonstrates success to them (by matching the programming to\u00a0<em>their<\/em> goals and ability level) \u2013 than to corrective exercise them to death.<\/p>\n<p>Get your clients strong(er).<\/p>\n<p>Show them what they <strong><em>can<\/em><\/strong> do.<\/p>\n<p>And for the love of god get them <em><strong>training<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/tonygentilcore.com\/2026\/07\/getting-stronger-corrective\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Before you move on, I wanted to let you know that Dean Somerset and I have just announced that we will be traveling to Dublin, Ireland this coming Fall to put on our 2-day hands-on workshop The Complete Fit Pro Blueprint.
