Granted I should be able to demonstrate a sprint or sprint mechanics without resembling a one-legged pirate, or worse\u2026blowing out a hamstring.<\/p>\n<p>But I don\u2019t need to be a world-class sprinter myself in order to coach or teach others to be able do it. At the end of the day it\u2019s about having the ability to break down movement into more manageable parts and more importantly, <strong><em>having the ability to get your athletes into better positions<\/em> <\/strong>(in order to express speed or strength or whatever).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media1.giphy.com\/media\/v1.Y2lkPTc5MGI3NjExdnV2ODJjcXZwN3lwYTRhcXlleXh0eGNyZjh3N2ozZXUyaHVrMHFvdSZlcD12MV9pbnRlcm5hbF9naWZfYnlfaWQmY3Q9Zw\/L4ph2kcoBKT9LcbI61\/giphy.gif\" width=\"480\" height=\"269\"\/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">via <a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/Jomboy-baseball-yankees-new-york-L4ph2kcoBKT9LcbI61\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And when it comes to getting people into better positions \u2013 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><em>especially as it relates to linear acceleration, <\/em><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0to steal a train of though from renowned coach <a href=\"https:\/\/leetaft.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lee Taft<\/a>, \u201cwe don\u2019t need to get too fancy with our toolbox.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Which Begs the Question: <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\">What Is Linear Acceleration<\/span><\/span>?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Good question.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll tell you what it\u2019s not\u2026.<em>sprinting\/top speed<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sprint\/Top Speed<\/strong> = more perpendicular posture.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Acceleration<\/strong> = more forward pitch or torso inclination.<\/p>\n<p>When we\u2019re coaching (linear) acceleration it\u2019s important to respect that the idea here is to produce a lot of force quickly. However, <strong><em>that force is still going to be longer in terms of foot contact time compared to top speed.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Linear acceleration requires getting things started and getting the center of mass moving. It\u2019s different than top speed.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We must produce a lot of force down and away<\/li>\n<li>We also need an extremely long arm action, which then coordinates with the same side leg and high knee drive. All of this accomplishes a ROM of the leg which then allows the athlete to produce as much force as needed to finish the push off to get into the next stride.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It sounds like a lot \u2013 and complicated \u2013 but I assure you it\u2019s not. This isn\u2019t to imply, of course, that some attention to detail isn\u2019t warranted. If it were easy everyone would be a challenging Usain Bolt to a game of Duck-Duck-Goose.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media3.giphy.com\/media\/v1.Y2lkPTc5MGI3NjExbXR5aG1sam13d3gwMXhxd29jcXo5NGV3eWJ0Mm4zbHdxZDRidmc0OCZlcD12MV9pbnRlcm5hbF9naWZfYnlfaWQmY3Q9Zw\/vCJrwYGBQlbdS\/giphy.gif\" width=\"400\" height=\"219\"\/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">via <a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/usain-bolt-vCJrwYGBQlbdS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But there are some easy and ingenious strategies in the form of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><em>EXTERNAL CUEING<\/em><\/strong><\/span> that\u2019ll help accomplish all of the above.<\/p>\n<h3>Linear Acceleration Troubleshooting<\/h3>\n<p><strong>To reiterate:<\/strong> linear acceleration is not the same as top speed. First and foremost, with acceleration we\u2019re working on <strong><em>starting speed<\/em><\/strong> which implies different joint angles and positions.<\/p>\n<h4>1) I already mentioned above that top speed requires more of a perpendicular posture and acceleration implies more forward pitch of the torso.<\/h4>\n<p>As such, a major mistake many athletes make out of the gate is, well, a poor starting position. Like this:<\/p>\n<p>Here I\u2019m starting way too upright and my hips (and shoulders) are too far back. Not a conducive position to produce horizontal force.<\/p>\n<p>Ideally we\u2019d want to start in a more staggered stance with the hips in front of push off (this will make it easier to gain momentum and get mass moving), which implies a more angled torso. Too, we want the shoulders to be in front of the hips<\/p>\n<h4>2) More Aggressive Arm Action<\/h4>\n<p>In acceleration the back side needs to be long, front side short. The back side is what matters in acceleration. The front side becomes more important during top speed.<\/p>\n<p>Lee Taft hammers this point home time and time again throughout his <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #ff0000;\" href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/1PDt9rB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CSAC<\/a><\/strong><\/span> course.<\/p>\n<p>To that end, a common mistake made is that people aren\u2019t aggressive enough with their arm action:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HpzkwBgZoVc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HpzkwBgZoVc<\/a><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll notice my back arm \u201cstays short\u201d and as a result both my arms and legs are choppy.<\/p>\n<p>A beautiful external cue to use here is to tell the athlete to be more aggressive with \u201c<strong><em>THROWING THE HANDS BACK<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6v193yEgzjs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6v193yEgzjs<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Looks sexier, right?<\/p>\n<p>And, subsequently, the more aggressive arm action \u201cnudges\u201d a more aggressive forward action of the knee\u2026.with minimal additional cueing.<\/p>\n<p>But what if all of that <strong><em>still<\/em><\/strong> doesn\u2019t get the desired effect?<\/p>\n<h3>The Magical World of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\">External Cueing<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>A brilliant corrective strategy I \u201cstole\u201d from Lee is to give the athlete a target to shoot for. This is external cueing at its finest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tonygentilcore.com\/2013\/06\/how-to-increase-your-strength-and-performance-instantly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>External cueing<\/strong><\/span><\/a> takes into consideration what the body is doing in space and implies direction, intent, and action.<\/p>\n<p>The corrective in this case would be to place a med ball \u2013 or anything: cone, hurdle, Ewok action figure \u2013 a few feet away from the athlete\u2019s starting position. The athlete must then explode, \u201c<strong><em>CHASE HIS SHOULDERS<\/em><\/strong>,\u201d and get past the object within one step.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=51B3WnDCq6w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=51B3WnDCq6w<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, this immediately incorporates a better arm action. Better arm action mirrors a greater leg action, which then produces more <strong><em>horizontal displacement<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Giving the athlete a target or something to shoot\/aim for (EXTERNAL CUEING) will \u201ccorrect\u201d acceleration mechanics without too much fluff.<\/p>\n<p>The addition of the target cues the athlete to push harder into the ground and then physics takes over.<\/p>\n<h4><b><i>I\u2019m coming for you Tom Cruise<\/i><\/b><\/h4>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/tonygentilcore.com\/2026\/07\/using-external-cueing-to-improve-linear-acceleration\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cI\u2019m not fast, but I like to pretend I am on the internet.\u201d Okay, I\u2019m kinda fast.
