If you\u2019ve already started keeping digital records, you\u2019re ahead of the game. If you haven\u2019t, there\u2019s still time to get organised before MTD applies to you.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Making Tax Digital?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is HMRC\u2019s new way of managing tax for self-employed people and landlords.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than keeping paper records or relying on spreadsheets before completing a single annual tax return, those within MTD will need to:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep digital records of their income and expenses<\/li>\n<li>Use compatible software to maintain those records<\/li>\n<li>Send quarterly updates to HMRC<\/li>\n<li>Submit a Final Declaration at the end of the tax year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aim is to reduce errors, improve record keeping and help people stay on top of their tax throughout the year instead of facing one large annual task.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who does MTD apply to?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Making Tax Digital is being introduced in stages.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From April 2026<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your combined self-employed and\/or property income is more than \u00a350,000, you should now be complying with MTD for Income Tax.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From April 2027<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The threshold reduces to \u00a330,000.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From April 2028<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The threshold reduces again to \u00a320,000, bringing millions more taxpayers into the scheme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your income is below these thresholds, you don\u2019t need to follow the new rules yet \u2013 but moving to digital record keeping now can make the transition much easier.<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Already over \u00a350,000?<\/h4>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One important point catches many people out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even if you meet the income threshold, MTD isn\u2019t automatic.
