The benefits of chocolate are touted across packaging and headlined in countless articles (including this one) \u2014 but is chocolate really a superfood measuring up alongside blueberries, green tea and chia seeds?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here\u2019s what we know: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4696435\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> have found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/170273\/nutrients\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">dark chocolate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to be highly nutritious and rich in antioxidants with the potential to improve blood flow, lower blood pressure, enhance skin quality, reduce inflammation, and even improve blood flow to the brain. In fact, chocolate was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4696435\/#:~:text=Cocoa%20contains%20a%20number%20of,cocoa%20(13%2C%20150).\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">historically<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> eaten for its purported healing properties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Americans spend billions (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/candyusa.com\/news\/new-nca-report-reveals-latest-consumer-trends-in-chocolate-consumption\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">more than $21 billion in 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, to be exact) of dollars on chocolate annually. So, does that equate to billions of touted health benefits?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Before we dig into health benefits &#8211; let\u2019s start with the basic processing of chocolate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All chocolate (dark, milk, nibs, bars, chips, cocoa powder, cacao, and yes, even white) begins its journey as a fruit on the cacao tree. The seeds that grow inside these fruits are called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/extension.psu.edu\/from-cacao-to-chocolate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cacao<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (also cocoa) beans. After harvest, beans are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6749277\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fermented, roasted, and shelled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; the inner pieces (\u201cnibs\u201d) are ground into cocoa (chocolate) liquor, a paste that contains nonfat cocoa solids and cocoa butter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On labels, \u201cpercent cacao\u201d refers to the proportion of cocoa liquor in the product; pressing out some cocoa butter from this liquor yields cocoa powder. Chocolate is made by combining cocoa liquor with cocoa butter and sugar; adding condensed or powdered milk makes milk chocolate.\u00a0 In the United States, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/candyusa.com\/news\/new-nca-report-reveals-latest-consumer-trends-in-chocolate-consumption\/#:~:text=Sweet%20escape:%2094%25%20of%20consumers,be%20happy%20with%20any%20variety.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">milk chocolate is the most commonly consumed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> type and typically contains ~10\u201312% cocoa liquor. \u201cDark\u201d chocolate (often labeled semisweet\/bittersweet) must contain \u226535% cocoa liquor by weight, whereas white chocolate contains only cocoa butter (\u226520%) with sweeteners and dairy ingredients. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4696435\/#s031\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So, is there a way to work chocolate into a balanced, healthy diet? Absolutely &#8211; but pay attention to the cocoa content and portion sizes.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"ua-header shortcode boxed conform-height conform-mobile sm\">\n<h2 class=\"the-header conform-parent\">\n<div class=\"v-center\">\n<div class=\"v-center-in\">THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF CHOCOLATE<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>1. ANTIOXIDANT POWER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5465813\/#abstract1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Flavonoids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are a type of polyphenol found naturally in plants that help protect them from environmental stressors. HEART HELPERS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cocoa beans are rich in flavonoids, especially in flavanols.(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4696435\/#s031\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) Flavanol is responsible for the bitterness we often taste in raw chocolate. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4696435\/#s031\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) Cocoa flavanols may support heart health by helping blood vessels relax to maintain healthy blood flow and by modestly lowering blood pressure. It\u2019s also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/2705587\/nutrients\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rich in minerals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> like magnesium, copper and iron.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cacao powder is very similar, but closer to its raw state than cocoa powder, as cocoa goes through an additional layer of high-heat roasting and processing. Bars that have more than 70% cacao are going to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6225491\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">have more antioxidants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> than milk chocolate. The more processed the chocolate, the fewer the benefits.
