There\u2019s obviously a lot of coaches out there doing great things. And, to be fair: more people than ever are now participating in gym activities compared to when I was first started out in this industry, which was way back in 2002.<\/p>\n<p>You know, when <em>Alias<\/em> was the #1 show on television and smart phones didn\u2019t exist.<\/p>\n<p>So we\u2019re doing something right as an industry.<\/p>\n<p>I think a better term to use here is \u201cre-frame.\u201d The fitness industry is in dire need of a re-frame. A re-frame where current (and potentially new) fitness professionals learn to understand that long-term success in this industry isn\u2019t tethered to the facade of social media or the 1 in a million chance you\u2019ll go viral. It can happen of course. And that\u2019s an amalgamation of knowing the x\u2019s and o\u2019s of program design, physiology, anatomy, and having dipped your toes in both the anecdotal <em>and<\/em> Pubmed circles when it comes to the latest health and fitness trends.<\/p>\n<p>A <em>competent<\/em> coach understands there\u2019s value in both sides of the fence. Furthermore, a <em>competent<\/em> coach isn\u2019t afraid to say \u201cit depends\u201d when asked their opinion on most things.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s also the \u201csoft\u201d skills of coaching. I.e., people skills.<\/p>\n<p>A <em>competent<\/em> coach doesn\u2019t deal in absolutes (no Siths over here!). A competent coach rarely, if ever, uses the terms \u201ceveryone,\u201d \u201cnever,\u201d or \u201calways\u201d to explain anything.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c<em>Everyone<\/em> needs to deadlift with a conventional stance.\u201d Nope!<\/li>\n<li>\u201c<em>Never<\/em> eat a carb after 6 pm.\u201d Hahaha, yeah right.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cYou <em>always<\/em> need to cater the program to the goal(s), injury history, and ability level of the client.\u201d Um, yeah, that\u2019s a good example of when using an absolute makes sense.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My hope is that this 2.0 version of my popular Coaching Competency 1-day workshop will help bring the masses back to the middle and help \u201creset\u201d everyone\u2019s mindset. That, yes, social media and all the romanticism involved in that world is a piece of the pie \u2013 it behooves everyone to \u201cplay the game.\u201d However, it\u2019s not a significant piece of the pie as far as <em>long-term<\/em> success in this industry is concerned.<\/p>\n<p>Starting early next year I\u2019ll be offering a new workshop for fitness professionals who are looking for REAL advice on building a successful career in fitness.<\/p>\n<h4>What this\u00a0workshop will NOT cover:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>How to build a social media following<\/li>\n<li>Kipping pull-ups\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>What this\u00a0workshop WILL cover:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>What it REALLY takes to build a career in this industry (me free-styling on lessons learned from over 20+ years as a coach: from commercial gym trainer to \u201cB-list fitness celebrity to bonafide gym owner (&lt;\u2014 which is something I originally NEVER wanted to touch with a ten-foot pole).<\/li>\n<li>How to build rapport (and increase motivation) with clients.<\/li>\n<li>How to simplify your assessments and programming to keep clients consistent.
