{"id":15238,"date":"2025-10-04T01:06:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-03T18:06:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/loudhdtv.com\/?p=15238"},"modified":"2025-10-04T01:06:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-03T18:06:11","slug":"the-overlooked-stuff-that-shouldnt-be-overlooked-that-almost-always-helps-people-get-results-tony-gentilcore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/loudhdtv.com\/?p=15238","title":{"rendered":"The Overlooked Stuff That Shouldn\u2019t Be Overlooked That Almost Always Helps People Get Results \u2013 Tony Gentilcore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>People want the quick fix.<\/p>\n<p>They want to be told that <em>7-Minute Abs (<\/em>or maybe we\u2019re down to <em>5-Minute Abs<\/em> now?<em>)<\/em> is all it takes to be beach ready, or that drinking an Acai berry detox tea mined from the belly button of a Centaur is the key to fat-loss.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve heard of crazier things on Reels.<\/p>\n<p>And then there\u2019s the high-school athlete who reaches out two weeks prior to tryouts, as if I\u2019m a wizard and all I have to do is wave my wand (and insert a few sets of box jumps) and PRESTO\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026they\u2019re going to be as equally prepared as those athletes who have been training and working out for several <em>months<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s quite interesting isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n<p>Everyone is seeking the silver bullet to success.<\/p>\n<p>However, on the contrary, in my experience, whether someone\u2019s goal is weight-loss\/fat-loss, muscle gain, improved athletic performance, general health, or, I don\u2019t know, to beat John Wick in a street fight, the \u201cx-factor\u201d often comes down to the mundane.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media0.giphy.com\/media\/v1.Y2lkPTc5MGI3NjExZ2JraWN1NG5yNTZ5bWZwazU3dzAzZXIyemZibTMzN2hkaW13aXJwMyZlcD12MV9pbnRlcm5hbF9naWZfYnlfaWQmY3Q9Zw\/iW8tsoJWcfPc4\/giphy.gif\"\/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/reaction-seinfeld-elaine-benes-iW8tsoJWcfPc4\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The stuff most people scoff at and altogether dismiss in lieu of the new, bright, shiny object in the room.<\/p>\n<h2>Like This Stuff<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Expectation Management<\/h3>\n<p>You know how it\u2019s popular nowadays for personal trainers and strength &amp; conditioning coaches to go out of their way to <em>not<\/em> refer to themselves as personal trainers and strength &amp; conditioning coaches?<\/p>\n<p>You know, stupid shit like\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Body Architect<\/li>\n<li>Human Performance Advocate<\/li>\n<li>Movement Mechanic<\/li>\n<li>Supreme Chancellor of Douchiness to the Douchiest Power<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I feel as if I have a superlative title for myself too.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>Manager of Expectations<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Whenever someone asks me \u201chow long will it take to\u2026.[insert goal here]\u201d I\u2019ll respond with \u201cI have no idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, I\u2019ll say something to the effect of:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cConsider me your Sherpa. I\u2019m here to guide you and point you in the right direction towards your goal(s) to the best of my ability, and to do so in a time efficient, fun, and safe manner.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And if that doesn\u2019t impress them I\u2019ll say this:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201c3\u00d752.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Meaning, if I can nudge them in the gym 3x per week, 52 weeks out of the year, then it stands to reason some good shit is going to happen.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than place a specific number or time frame on a goal, it\u2019s my job as their coach to titrate their expectations and to reframe things towards the idea of <strong><em>CONSISTENCY<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Then, after a while (and yes, with a bit of butting of heads), they\u2019ll learn that progress is more about appreciating the journey rather than the destination.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Walk, Sleep, Hydrate<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media3.giphy.com\/media\/v1.Y2lkPTc5MGI3NjExanRhcDQ1azE3NG9rb3F5MjF0czNwZGF3aDN3N3ByMW9hdGZ3cmNuNCZlcD12MV9pbnRlcm5hbF9naWZfYnlfaWQmY3Q9Zw\/WGFdv6kbikBq0\/giphy.gif\"\/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/hangover-WGFdv6kbikBq0\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Honestly, whenever I have a conversation with a client\/athlete and (s)he is concerned about progress (or lack thereof), before I audit their program\/nutrition I\u2019ll look to see whether or not they\u2019re doing the following.<\/p>\n<h4>Go for a Walk<\/h4>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I used to think it was cool (and I was doing the industry a favor) being an uppity coach who said stuff like \u201cwalking is life, stop saying it\u2019s exercise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was dumb.<\/p>\n<p>It IS exercise, and undervalued.<\/p>\n<p>Not all exercise has to be a ball-buster.<\/p>\n<p>Walking = recovery. Do more.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tony Gentilcore (sometimes I sound smart. Or like an old man. Whatever)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>What\u2019s more, going for a (brisk) walk is a great way to expend energy in addition to helping to improve mental health.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s more (even morer), walking is exercise that\u2019s accessible to anyone with working legs \u2013 so it\u2019s pretty hard for someone to conjure up an excuse to <em>not<\/em> do it.<\/p>\n<p>Do yourself a favor and check out the hashtag #walkeverydamnday and maybe reconsider your position if you\u2019re someone who feels telling someone to go for a daily walk is silly or beneath your superior coaching skills.<\/p>\n<h4>2. Go to Bed<\/h4>\n<p>I am a huge fan of going to bed.<\/p>\n<p>In fact I am such a fan of going to bed (early) that I\u2019m pretty sure I have entered cantankerous curmudgeon territory at the age of 48.<\/p>\n<p>My answer for pretty much everything is\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cMeh, go to bed.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"giphy-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/embed\/d2Z8BZgur7pAr9dK\" width=\"365\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/giphy.com\/gifs\/death-ray-eyes-grumpy-old-man-mr-boots-d2Z8BZgur7pAr9dK\">via GIPHY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>SLEEP = RECOVERY (and bevy of other benefits).<\/p>\n<p>Feel like a bag of dicks all the time?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe stop bragging about getting up at 4 AM every day because <em>#hustleandgrind<\/em> and the subsequent contrast baths and get some sleep instead?<\/p>\n<h4>3. Hydrate<\/h4>\n<p>By now some of you reading don\u2019t have enough eye rolls to give. But here\u2019s one more suggestion to bring things to a nice, tidy, conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>Ask your clients whether or not they\u2019re hydrated?<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t so much a \u201care you drinking 8 glasses of water per day?\u201d kind of question as it is \u201cwhat color is your pee?\u201d question.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clearer Pee = good to go.<\/li>\n<li>Pee the color of battery acid = not so good to go.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s been clearly shown in the literature that chronic dehydration can affect performance in the weight room\u00a0 \u2013 upwards of 8-10%. Likewise, chronic lethargy can be attributed to lack of hydration, in addition to it affecting basic\u00a0 metabolic functions.<\/p>\n<p>I.e., the body\u2019s ability to burn energy is diminished the more dehydrated someone is.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cWow, Tony. Telling people to go for a walk, get more sleep, AND to drink more water? This is next level shit. What\u2019s next? Flossing?
