To me, all those long runs were opportunities to test out my running kit and nutrition so I could have it dialled down for race day. <\/p>\n<p>Having completed the full marathon now, I\u2019ve learnt exactly what gear made my day\u2014and what I\u2019d change for next time. A lot of people asked me how I could wear leggings in the heat and my main answer was, these were what I trained in. <\/p>\n<p>We all know there should be nothing new on race day so changing to shorts would\u2019ve been a big risk I didn\u2019t need to take. Also, the material of the leggings is sweat wicking so it actually kept me very comfortable throughout. <\/p>\n<p>Personally, I would take the heat over rain any day but it could be useful to have some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adidas.co.uk\/waterproof-trainers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">waterproof trainers<\/a> in your rotation just in case you end up with a rainy day. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\">\n<table class=\"has-fixed-layout\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Clothing Items <\/td>\n<td\/><\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Base layer <\/td>\n<td>Sports bra<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Tights \/ Shorts<\/td>\n<td>Running top <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Socks <\/td>\n<td>Arm warmers <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Wind jacket <\/td>\n<td>Rain jacket <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Snood (headband \/ neck warmer) <\/td>\n<td>Cap \/ visor <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Running shoes <\/td>\n<td\/><\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accessories &amp; Gear <\/h3>\n<p>I had my watch set up to notify me of timings for my run\/walk intervals which was super useful. I wore my headphones the whole way round the course but never actually turned them on so if you\u2019re running London \u2013 leave them at home. <\/p>\n<p>I had one AirTag in my bag just so I could keep an eye on it and carried one on my person so my mum could track me from the comfort of home. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\">\n<table class=\"has-fixed-layout\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Accessories &amp; Gear Items <\/td>\n<td\/><\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>GPS (charged)<\/td>\n<td>Headphones <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Sunglasses <\/td>\n<td>Apple AirTag  <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/figure>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nutrition &amp; Hydration <\/h3>\n<p>With the weather turning out to be very hot (by running standards), it was super important to hydrate well in the lead up to race day and also during the event.<\/p>\n<p>I carried two 500ml flasks of water with me \u2013 one plain and one with electrolytes containing 1000mg of sodium (as recommended when I used the Precision Hydration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.precisionhydration.com\/planner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fuel &amp; Hydration Planner<\/a>). <\/p>\n<p>I also utilised every water station on the course; drinking some and pouring some over my head and body to help me keep cool. <\/p>\n<p>As I had quite a late start, I had some food before I left home and also packed some overnight oats which I ate while waiting for my start. I knew it was going to be a long day without a proper meal \/ food so wanted to make sure I was well fuelled from the very beginning. <\/p>\n<p>I used a takeaway container and disposable spoon which I dumped in the recycling after use. Find them in <a href=\"https:\/\/amzlink.to\/az0Bdmj5VSy5l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">my duathlon kit list on Amazon<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>I also wore old trainers to the start of the event to save wearing my race day shoes for even longer than I had to. We did however have the option to drop a bag at the finish line the day before, and I took advantage of that in the end. <\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t end up packing too much in there, but I\u2019m very glad I packed my recovery shoes (<a href=\"https:\/\/amzlink.to\/az0KkiVhrb5qx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">OOFOS<\/a> \u2013 can\u2019t beat them!) and a change of clothes \u2013 including my finishers shirt to show off with my medal. of course. The wet wipes came in handy to help me freshen up before jumping on public transport to head home, so I highly recommend. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\">\n<table class=\"has-fixed-layout\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>Post Event \/ Long Run Essential Items <\/td>\n<td\/><\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Wet wipes <\/td>\n<td>Recovery shoes <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Compression socks <\/td>\n<td>Change of clothes <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Extra Tips For Race Day <\/h2>\n<p>Here are a couple extra things to think about \/ pack for race day: <\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pack a couple paracetamols in your race vest as if you do need any from the First Aid at the event, you\u2019ll need to stop and fill in paperwork. I ended up needing them due to some unforeseen foot pain so I\u2019m glad I had them with me. <\/li>\n<li>Wear waterproof mascara because you\u2019re gonna cry, sweat, run through showers if it\u2019s hot and \/ or get rained on. <\/li>\n<li>Save your caffeinated gels \/ snacks for a kick in the final stretch of the race. I took mine somewhere around mile 16 to give them time to hit my system. Worked a treat.
