I\u2019d like to think that no-one bought my stolen bike having done some due diligence, but how do we even know what to look for when buying a second hand bike, to make sure we don\u2019t get screwed over?! <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Buy a Used Bike Safely: Your Checklist<\/h2>\n<p>Buying a second-hand bike can feel like navigating a minefield, but a few simple checks will save you from major headaches.\u00a0Someone recently came to me asking for tips and whilst I had a few, I reached out to the community to see what else they could add. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Check It\u2019s Not Stolen<\/h3>\n<p>Before you even think about pedals or paintwork, plug the frame number into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeregister.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BikeRegister<\/a> (or your local equivalent). If it comes up flagged, walk away\u2014fast. And if the seller can\u2019t produce a purchase receipt, consider that another, potential, red flag.<\/p>\n<p>I say potential because I personally don\u2019t have receipts for my bikes having gotten them directly from Liv Cycling UK through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.keepitsimpelle.com\/liv-cycling-uk-ambassador\/\">my role as an ambassador<\/a> but I can show a rich timeline on my social accounts of life with any bike I\u2019ve ever owned. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Verify the Seller<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re shopping on Facebook Marketplace or Ebay, make sure to take a quick peek at their profile. Someone flogging half a dozen different bikes in one go is usually a dealer (or worse, moving on stolen stock). <\/p>\n<p>The ideal seller lists one bike and can rattle off its backstory: when they bought it, how often it\u2019s had a tune-up, and any crash scars it\u2019s picked up along the way.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask About Service History and Crash Damage<\/h3>\n<p>A good seller will proudly recite service dates, show you stamped service book pages or invoices, and maybe even share a snap of that headset replacement. If they hesitate, mumble, or dodge the question, there\u2019s probably something they don\u2019t want you to see.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">more on bike security and insurance:<\/h4>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inspect Originality<\/h3>\n<p>Bikes are like people\u2014you notice when parts don\u2019t match. Make sure both wheels are the same make\/model, and that components look consistent. Mismatched bits often mean corners were cut, and uneven wear can hide bigger issues.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d also double check that they\u2019re including everything in the pictures, in the sale. They might be planning on swapping back the stock saddle for example, to don\u2019t hesitate to ask the question. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mind the Price<\/h3>\n<p>If the price looks suspiciously low, there\u2019s usually a good reason: stolen, wrecked, or just plain knackered. If it\u2019s on the high side, bookmark the listing and stalk it for a week or two\u2014you might catch a price drop. A little patience can bag you a decent deal.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask Why They\u2019re Selling<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cUpgraded to carbon for racing\u201d is a perfectly sensible answer. \u201cUh\u2026 reasons\u201d is a total deal-breaker. A straight answer tells you they\u2019re confident in both the bike and its condition.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Meet in a Safe, Public Spot<\/h3>\n<p>Dark alleys and sketchy car parks are a no-go. Opt for a busy caf\u00e9 car park, a well-lit petrol station, or even your local police station\u2019s \u201cSafe Trading\u201d zone. Stay sharp, keep your wits\u2014and your wallet\u2014on you.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d suggest maybe taking a friend with you too, for the extra peace of mind. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trust Your Gut (But Verify with Your Eyes)<\/h3>\n<p>Last but not least, if something feels off, it probably is.
