And as a mom, Dr. Nixon understands how these issues can be stressful for parents and kids.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always try to put myself in the parent\u2019s shoes,\u201d Dr. Nixon says. \u201cI have a child who&#8217;s been in the hospital and has health needs. So, I always try to consider how I would feel in that situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Nixon also helps her young patients feel at ease by taking the time to explain their care, especially when it comes to surgery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to answer their questions,\u201d she says. \u201cIf they have an idea of what the next step is and the step after that, maybe it won&#8217;t be so scary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For acute orthopedic injuries like broken bones, Dr. Nixon enjoys helping children get back to sports, dance or just living life without pain. \u201cHelping a kid get back to whatever it is they love to do is so rewarding,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Nixon has a special connection to her patients with complex orthopedic conditions. \u201cI get to take care of people who have high needs,\u201d Dr. Nixon explains. \u201cAnd as the mother of a child with health needs, I really take that very seriously.
