I spent an entire day this week\u2014<em data-start=\"598\" data-end=\"629\">as a health and fitness coach<\/em>\u2014talking to clients who are absolutely paralyzed when it comes to food. These are smart, capable women who are out here crushing it in their careers and lives \u2026 and still find themselves stuck in anxiety spirals over eating non-organic frozen vegetables.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"560\" data-end=\"877\"><strong>This is madness.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"879\" data-end=\"899\">I heard things like:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"901\" data-end=\"1063\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"901\" data-end=\"939\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"903\" data-end=\"939\">\u201cI can\u2019t eat deli meat, it\u2019s toxic.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"940\" data-end=\"987\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"942\" data-end=\"987\">\u201cI\u2019m afraid of bread\u2014it\u2019s full of chemicals.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"988\" data-end=\"1063\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"990\" data-end=\"1063\">\u201cCanned beans are processed. I thought I had to avoid them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1065\" data-end=\"1172\">This is not a coincidence. This is the direct result of a <a href=\"https:\/\/fitbottomedgirls.com\/2025\/04\/the-wellness-industry-trap\/\">wellness culture<\/a> that\u2019s turned fear into click-bait content.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"1174\" data-end=\"1197\">I\u2019ve Been There, Too<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1199\" data-end=\"1285\">For the record, I\u2019m not immune. I\u2019ve been down that <a href=\"https:\/\/fitbottomedgirls.com\/2018\/04\/12-signs-that-healthy-is-becoming-a-dangerous-obsession\/\">\u201cclean eating\u201d<\/a> rabbit hole myself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1287\" data-end=\"1474\">In my own obsessive pursuit of \u201coptimal health,\u201d I spent years eliminating anything \u201cprocessed,\u201d avoiding \u201ctoxins,\u201d and focusing only on nutrient-dense whole foods. Sounds healthy, right?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1476\" data-end=\"1541\">Except I was training hard and <em data-start=\"1507\" data-end=\"1520\">undereating<\/em> for a long-ass time thanks to all the food rules I made up for myself in the name of \u201cbeing healthy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1543\" data-end=\"1827\">That restrictive mindset wrecked my energy, disrupted my hormones, and left me battling symptoms of <strong data-start=\"1643\" data-end=\"1676\">low energy availability (LEA)<\/strong>\u2014including stress fractures, brain fog, anxiety, fatigue, sleep disruptions, and recovery issues. And I see the same patterns playing out in <em data-start=\"1790\" data-end=\"1799\">so many<\/em> of the women I coach today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1829\" data-end=\"1948\">Not because they don\u2019t care about their health\u2014<em data-start=\"1876\" data-end=\"1904\">because they care a lot<\/em> and have been taught to focus on the wrong damn things.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"1950\" data-end=\"1993\">Enter: The Wellness Influencer Circus \ud83c\udfaa<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1995\" data-end=\"2228\">Here\u2019s the playbook: influencers walk through their local grocery store with their ring light and a smug half-smirk, pick up a normal food item that the average family might buy, flip over the label, and gasp dramatically while declaring in their most judgmental tone:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2230\" data-end=\"2392\">\u274c \u201cThis has seed oils\u2014it\u2019s inflammatory!\u201d<br data-start=\"2271\" data-end=\"2274\"\/>\u274c \u201cYou can\u2019t pronounce that ingredient\u2014it\u2019s toxic!\u201d<br data-start=\"2325\" data-end=\"2328\"\/>\u274c \u201cIf it has more than three ingredients, it\u2019s not real food!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2394\" data-end=\"2504\">And of course, they always have a better alternative\u2014<em data-start=\"2447\" data-end=\"2468\">conveniently linked<\/em> to a brand they\u2019re partnering with \u2026 and receiving a commission from. Or head to their website and you\u2019ll find they sell their own products that will make your weekly grocery bill look more like a luxury car payment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2506\" data-end=\"2782\">Spoiler alert: if you actually tried to eat the way these folks recommend, you\u2019d spend your entire paycheck and a shit ton of anxiety on finding foods with only organic ingredients \u2026 and likely develop \u00a0disordered eating habits along the way. Meanwhile, they\u2019re cashing checks by selling fear and virtue signaling disguised as \u201cwellness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2784\" data-end=\"2821\">Let\u2019s call it what it is: <strong data-start=\"2810\" data-end=\"2821\">a scam.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"2823\" data-end=\"2851\">\u201cClean Eating\u201d Is Made Up<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2853\" data-end=\"3153\">There is <em data-start=\"2862\" data-end=\"2866\">no<\/em> scientific definition for \u201cclean eating.\u201d There is no universal standard for what\u2019s \u201cclean,\u201d \u201cdirty,\u201d \u201cgood,\u201d or \u201ctoxic.\u201d And yet, the number of women I see developing disordered eating patterns is skyrocketing\u2014largely fueled by influencers who confuse food literacy with fearmongering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3155\" data-end=\"3176\">Let\u2019s be very clear:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3178\" data-end=\"3237\">\ud83e\uddea <strong data-start=\"3181\" data-end=\"3211\">The dose makes the poison.<\/strong><br data-start=\"3211\" data-end=\"3214\"\/>This is Toxicology 101.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dr.andrealove?igsh=ZnZoeG1oeTB6OW54\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dr. Andrea Love<\/a>, \u201c Toxicity refers to a chemical, physical, or biological exposure that might cause harm to an organism, either directly or indirectly. Scientifically, anything can be toxic at a certain exposure. Anything can be non-toxic at a certain [different] exposure.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>She goes on to further explain \u201cIt\u2019s about exposure \u2014 how much of a substance, how often, and how it enters the body. All of these elements are needed to determine if something is toxic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The examples she provides are great to illustrate this point. For example, drinking too much water in a short period of time can kill you. And that\u2019s not the only way water \u2013 which makes up 60% of your body \u2013 can kill you. If just a small amount of water goes down the wrong pipe into your lungs rather than into your stomach, you can die.<\/p>\n<p>There are plenty of examples that also go the other way\u2014substances that kill humans when administered in the right dose but also are essential for life in small quantities or are used in medications to save lives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3239\" data-end=\"3525\">The idea that an ingredient is automatically \u201ctoxic\u201d just because it has a long name or was tested in absurd doses on rats is nonsense.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3694\" data-end=\"3819\">So no, you\u2019re not slowly killing your kids with a granola bar. And yes, you can eat a sandwich without fear of \u201ccarcinogens.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"3821\" data-end=\"3847\">What I Focus On Instead<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3849\" data-end=\"4006\">I don\u2019t spend time worrying about nitrates in my turkey slices, the food dye in my gummy bears, or the \u201cprocessed\u201d nature of my favorite protein bar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4008\" data-end=\"4043\">Because I\u2019m too busy helping women:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4045\" data-end=\"4206\">\u2705 Get enough <a href=\"https:\/\/fitbottomedgirls.com\/2025\/01\/fiber-and-gut-health-the-unsung-hero-of-midlife-wellness\/\"><em data-start=\"4058\" data-end=\"4065\">fiber<\/em><\/a> to support gut health<br data-start=\"4087\" data-end=\"4090\"\/>\u2705 Eat enough <em data-start=\"4103\" data-end=\"4112\">protein<\/em> to support muscle and aging<br data-start=\"4140\" data-end=\"4143\"\/>\u2705 Fuel their bodies with enough <em data-start=\"4175\" data-end=\"4185\">calories<\/em> to power their lives<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4208\" data-end=\"4406\">The women I coach aren\u2019t struggling because of the chemicals in their almond milk. They\u2019re struggling because they\u2019re trying to navigate a world where nutrition advice is driven by clicks, not care.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"4408\" data-end=\"4465\">MAHA Is the New Diet Culture<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4467\" data-end=\"4520\">Let\u2019s not mince words: this is just diet culture 2.0.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4522\" data-end=\"4749\">The Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement is diet culture wrapped in a wellness hoodie. It demonizes ingredients, moralizes food choices, and shames people for not living up to an impossible standard of purity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4751\" data-end=\"4818\">Even worse? It distracts us from the <strong data-start=\"4788\" data-end=\"4796\">real<\/strong> public health crises:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4820\" data-end=\"4970\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4820\" data-end=\"4839\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4822\" data-end=\"4839\">Food insecurity<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4840\" data-end=\"4871\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4842\" data-end=\"4871\">Lack of nutrition education<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4872\" data-end=\"4913\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4874\" data-end=\"4913\">Inaccessible, unaffordable healthcare<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4914\" data-end=\"4970\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4916\" data-end=\"4970\">Corporate policies that prioritize profits over people<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4916\" data-end=\"4970\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/drjessicaknurick?igsh=czJvbjZ3cmlqcWc3\" class=\"external\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dr. Jessica Knurick<\/a> calls it what it is: <em data-start=\"5015\" data-end=\"5041\">a deliberate distraction<\/em> to keep us from demanding systemic change.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"5086\" data-end=\"5132\">And Let\u2019s Talk About Big Wellness for a Sec<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5134\" data-end=\"5270\">It\u2019s wild how many people will scream about \u201cBig Pharma\u201d while buying unregulated supplements from an Instagram ad with zero skepticism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5272\" data-end=\"5397\">Yes, Big Pharma deserves scrutiny\u2014but at least it\u2019s required to submit peer-reviewed studies and undergo regulatory approval.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5399\" data-end=\"5481\"><strong data-start=\"5399\" data-end=\"5416\">Big Wellness?<\/strong> It\u2019s a $6.3 <em data-start=\"5429\" data-end=\"5439\">trillion<\/em> industry <em>(4 times the size of Big Pharma)<\/em> with almost no oversight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5483\" data-end=\"5514\">And many of its loudest voices are creating monetized misinformation by:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"5516\" data-end=\"5843\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"5516\" data-end=\"5565\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5518\" data-end=\"5565\">Cherry-picking junk science to back their biases<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"5566\" data-end=\"5634\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5568\" data-end=\"5634\">Pushing elitist food standards that are inaccessible to most people<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"5635\" data-end=\"5710\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5637\" data-end=\"5710\">Selling green powders, detoxes, and supplements to \u201cfix\u201d problems they invented<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"5711\" data-end=\"5772\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5713\" data-end=\"5772\">Preying on our desire to do the \u201cright\u201d thing for our health<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"5773\" data-end=\"5843\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5775\" data-end=\"5843\">Undermining trust in science and medicine to boost their own authority (and bank account)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"5845\" data-end=\"5865\">Here\u2019s the Truth:<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5867\" data-end=\"6027\">If your food rules are so restrictive that they\u2019re preventing you from eating enough, nourishing your body, or enjoying your life\u2014it\u2019s time for a reality check.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5867\" data-end=\"6027\">I see women over and over again trying to adhere to a bunch made-up food rules they picked up from fear-based food influencers with no real evidence to support them only to obsess over them to the point that it\u2019s all they can think about \u2026 until the cravings win and they eat a whole package of the food they were trying to avoid because some unqualified weirdo on the internet told them it was toxic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"6029\" data-end=\"6123\">You deserve better than fear-based nutrition advice.
