Evening primrose oil comes from the plant&#8217;s seeds.<\/p>\n<p>People take evening primrose oil as a dietary supplement. It most often comes in capsules to take by mouth. The supplement has omega-6 fatty acids, including gamma-linolenic acid, also called GLA.<\/p>\n<p>People take evening primrose to treat many conditions.<\/p>\n<h3>What the research says<\/h3>\n<p>Most research on the use of evening primrose offers little to no help for these conditions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Atopic dermatitis,<\/strong> also called eczema.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Breast pain.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Diabetic neuropathy,<\/strong> a type of nerve damage that can be caused by diabetes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Premenstrual syndrome,<\/strong> also called PMS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Our take<\/h3>\n<div class=\"auto\">\n<div class=\"contentbox mayo-take\">\n<div class=\"img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/-\/media\/kcms\/gbs\/patient-consumer\/images\/2017\/08\/29\/19\/22\/stoplight-yellow.svg\" alt=\"Yellow light: Caution\"\/> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h4>Caution<\/h4>\n<p>Evening primrose oil is likely safe for most people to take for a short time. But research hasn&#8217;t found that the supplement treats any condition.<\/p>\n<h3>Safety and side effects<\/h3>\n<p>When taken by mouth in typical amounts for a short time, evening primrose oil is most likely safe.<\/p>\n<p>But taking evening primrose oil can cause:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Upset stomach.<\/li>\n<li>Loose stools.<\/li>\n<li>Headache.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Don&#8217;t take evening primrose if you have a bleeding condition. Taking the supplement may raise the bleeding risk. If you&#8217;re having surgery, stop taking evening primrose two weeks before the surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Also, don&#8217;t take evening primrose if you have epilepsy or schizophrenia. The supplement might raise your risk of seizures.<\/p>\n<p>Evening primrose oil might raise the risk of pregnancy complications. Some types of evening primrose may act like estrogen. So people with hormone-sensitive cancers also shouldn&#8217;t take it. It also may raise blood pressure.<\/p>\n<h3>Interactions<\/h3>\n<p>Possible interactions include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Anticoagulants and anti-platelet medicines, herbs and supplements.<\/strong> These types of medicines, herbs and supplements keep blood from clotting. Taking evening primrose while also taking these medicines may raise the risk of bleeding.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cytochrome P450 3A4 substrates,<\/strong> also called CYP3A4 substrates. Use evening primrose with care if you take a medicine affected by these enzymes. One such medicine is the cholesterol-lowering lovastatin (Altoprev).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lopinavir-ritonavir (Kaletra).<\/strong> This medicine treats the infection caused by human immunodeficiency virus, also called HIV. Evening primrose oil might slow how quickly the body breaks down this medicine.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Phenothiazines.<\/strong> These medicines treat serious mental health conditions.
