However, the concept of burning calories while sleeping isn\u2019t sensationalism \u2014 it\u2019s science. You <em>do<\/em> burn calories while sleeping. Quite a few, actually. But before you trade in your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/best-yoga-mat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">yoga mat<\/a> for a cot, there are a few things you should know.<\/p>\n<h2>How Many Calories Do You Burn Sleeping?<\/h2>\n<p>So, just how many calories do you burn sleeping? As with so many questions related to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/100-ways-to-lose-weight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weight loss<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/boost-metabolism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">metabolism<\/a>, the answer is: \u201cIt depends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each of us has a unique basal metabolic rate (BMR), or resting metabolic rate. \u201cBasal metabolic rate is the minimum amount of energy, or calories, expended that is compatible with sustaining life,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/eatwellautoimmune.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Danielle Gaffen<\/a>, MS, RDN. \u201cAn individual\u2019s BMR reflects the amount of energy used during 24 hours while physically and mentally at rest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>BMR encompasses basic bodily functions, like breathing and blood circulation. It\u2019s determined by factors including weight, height, body composition, age, biological sex, and activity levels.<\/p>\n<p>Essentially, BMR is your calorie-burning baseline that accounts for approximately 60 percent of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2818133\/figure\/F1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">total energy expenditure<\/a>, with the remaining 40 percent coming from digesting food, performing everyday activities, and exercising. Gaffen explains that the most accurate method for determining your BMR is through direct or indirect calorimetry, a technique that measures the subject\u2019s heat production or gas exchange. Calorimetry, however, requires expensive equipment and is typically difficult to access.<\/p>\n<p>In working with her clients, Gaffen uses the Mifflin-St. Jeor equation, which according to one\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15883556\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>, typically calculates BMR to within 10 percent of the measured value. The calculations for men and women are as follows:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Men:<\/strong> 10 \u00d7 weight (kg) + 6.25 \u00d7 height (cm) \u2013 5 \u00d7 age (y) + 5<br \/><strong>Women:<\/strong> 10 \u00d7 weight (kg) + 6.25 \u00d7 height (cm) \u2013 5 \u00d7 age (y) \u2013 161<\/p>\n<p>Want to know how many calories you burn in a full 24 hours?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are online calculators that you can use to estimate the number of calories your body burns in a day,\u201d Gaffen says. \u201cThese calculators take into account your current weight, sex, age, height, and physical activity level.\u201d She recommends\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/bwp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Body Weight Planner<\/a>\u00a0from National Institutes of Health and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.myplate.gov\/myplate-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Get Your MyPlate Plan<\/a>, a widget on the USDA\u2019s MyPlate website.<\/p>\n<p>Although these calculators exist, a dietitian would be your best and most accurate resource for determining your BMR.<\/p>\n<h2>Can You Influence How Many Calories You Burn Sleeping?<\/h2>\n<p>Many of the factors that determine your BMR and, therefore, how many calories you burn sleeping are beyond your control. It\u2019s possible to elicit a minor boost by gaining muscle mass, as one pound of muscle\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/patientinstructions\/000893.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">burns more calories<\/a> than one pound of fat. While muscle is more metabolically active than fat, research suggests that gaining muscle mass likely won\u2019t significantly affect calorie burn.<\/p>\n<p>In one\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.wku.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=2051&amp;context=ijes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>, previously sedentary women who participated in six weeks of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bodi.com\/blog\/benefits-of-resistance-training\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resistance training<\/a> experienced a significant increase in their BMR. Yet, despite the bump, none of the women lost weight or saw a remarkable change in their body composition.<\/p>\n<p>If your goal is to burn more calories over the course of a day, your best bet is to focus on what you do when you\u2019re awake.<\/p>\n<p>Exercise regularly and strive to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bodi.com\/blog\/14-unique-ways-to-get-your-10000-steps-in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more consistently physically active<\/a> overall, even when you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bodi.com\/blog\/neat-exercises\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not technically working out<\/a>. An apple contains the same amount of calories, whether you eat it for breakfast or a midnight snack.<\/p>\n<p>However, the time of day can impact your behaviors around food. \u201cIt is common to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beachbodyondemand.com\/blog\/how-to-stop-mindless-eating\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mindlessly snack<\/a> in the evenings when relaxing or watching TV,\u201d Gaffen says. \u201cThis habit can lead to consuming more calories, which can lead to weight gain.
