May help support focus<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;L-theanine helps the body adapt to the effects of stress,&#8221; Falcone says. &#8220;Exercise is a stressor, and L-theanine can help us have a clearer, more focused mindset.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In a randomized, placebo-controlled\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6836118\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study in 2019<\/a>, 30 participants were given either 200 mg of L-theanine or a placebo daily for four weeks. Those who took L-theanine reported better sleep quality and improved performance on cognitive tasks when compared to the placebo group.<\/p>\n<p>Those who combined L-theanine with caffeine <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28056735\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">also reported<\/a> improved alertness and better performance on attention-switching tasks.<\/p>\n<h3>\n<div class=\"height-spacer height-spacer-1\"><\/div>\n<p>4. May support the benefits of caffeine<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-179252\" src=\"https:\/\/bod-blog-assets.prod.cd.beachbodyondemand.com\/bod-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/29105249\/l-theanine-600-caffeine.jpg\" alt=\"man drinking coffee at home | L-Theanine\" width=\"606\" height=\"389\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Studies have found that caffeine&#8217;s benefits on focus and attention are maintained and supported by adding L-theanine, Falcone says.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22326943\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one study<\/a>\u00a0published in the journal\u00a0<em>Neuropharmacology<\/em>, participants who took 50 mg of caffeine and 100 mg of L-theanine made fewer errors when performing a task than a group who took a placebo.<\/p>\n<p>And a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29420994\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2018 study<\/a>\u00a0found that taking 200 mg of L-theanine and 160 mg of caffeine improved participants&#8217; concentration better than a placebo or either supplement alone.<\/p>\n<h2>\n<div class=\"height-spacer height-spacer-1\"><\/div>\n<p>What&#8217;s the Ideal Amount of L-Theanine?<\/h2>\n<p>Research suggests that between\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31758301\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">200 mg and 400 mg<\/a>\u00a0of L-theanine per day is the ideal amount for helping to promote a relaxed state of mind even among people exposed to stressful situations.<\/p>\n<p>Greenblatt notes that you may choose to divvy up your servings of L-theanine \u2014 for example, supplementing with around 200 mg twice daily rather than a single 400 mg supplement.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind the effects may not be instantaneous for everyone. &#8220;While most people experience benefits within a few days, for some, the effects seem to occur more slowly,&#8221; Greenblatt adds.
